Get Through Today

I decide to get this over with and pull out my phone, I turn it on. It starts freaking out as the notifications start rolling in. There were 20 missed calls and 45 text messages, all from Kandis. I open my messages. Wife to be - Jude please talk to me. Wifey to be - Jude please! I love you! The more I scroll the madder she gets. Wifey to be- you're an ASSHOLE! wifey to be - you are such a child! I can't believe you won't even talk to me!! Wifey to be- JUDE! ANSWER YOUR f*****g PHONE!!! Wifey to be- JUDE! Wifey to be - f**k YOU JUDE! f**k YOU! IM GLAD I f****d DENNIS! HE WAS BETTER THAN YOU ANYWAY!! Ooooh! There it is! I get up and take a seat at the dinner table pulling out my lab top. At least she made this easy. Wifey to be - I'm sorry I didn't mean that. I just want you to talk to me! I love you! Please call me. I delete the entire conversation and block her number. Next I take out my laptop and begin emailing all the vendors, florist, dress shop, tux shop, bakery, and the hotel where we'd booked the ballroom for the reception and the resort we were planning on having the ceremony at and notifying them that the weddings had been cancelled. Hopefully I'll be able to get some of my deposits back. The ceremony wasn't supposed to be for 3 more months, so fingers crossed. I could use that money. I make myself a simple dinner, then grab the new bottle of Jack from the freezer and head back to the living room. I decide I better call my mom, and let her know, before I start drinking. Picking up my phone I click on her contact and the phone starts ringing. “Jude! How are you my son?” She answers, such a nerd, but I love her. I let out a deep sigh,”Hey mom, not good if I'm being honest.” “Oh no! What's wrong baby?” “The weddings off mom. I broke up with Kandis.” “What? Oh honey! What happened??” “She was cheating on me mom! I caught her red handed.” “Are you serious?! What a slut!” “Mom!” “I'm not sorry honey. She's a slut!” “ I know that…now.” “I'm sorry she broke your heart baby. I know you really loved her, but at least you got to see her true colors before you said “I do”.” “I know, mom. A divorce would be a lot harder and more expensive than just blocking her.” “Good for you baby! She doesn't deserve your heart ache. I know you're hurting though. Why don't you come home for the weekend??” I think about it for a half a second “Alright, I think I will. Otherwise I'll just be sitting here alone all weekend.” “Oh good! I'll prepare your room and let your dad and brothers know you'll be home.” “Thanks mom. I'll see you tomorrow night.” “Anything for you baby. I love you and I'll see you tomorrow.” “Love you too mom.” I hang up the phone and toss it on the couch next to me. I grab the bottle and the remote clicking through the channels. I wake up on the couch, the TV is still on. I look at the time and realize I'm supposed to be at work in an hour. “s**t” I say out loud, forcing myself to get up and head for the shower. I shower and get ready in record time, even though my head is banging and my stomach is trashed from the hangover racking my body. I get to work on time, clock in and head for the locker room. As I enter the locker room, Victoria is standing at her locker. “ Hey.” I greet her She jumps and turns around her eyes bulging her hand fisting her shirt on her chest. “Holy s**t! Jude! Oh my God you scared the s**t out of me!!” She says putting her hands on her knees. I can't help but chuckle, “Sorry. Didn't realize you were jumpy.” She laughs, the sound caressing my skin, giving me goosebumps. “I'm not THAT jumpy” she tries to defend herself. “Riiiiiiiight” I chuckle again, nodding my head on slow motion. “How was your night?” She asks standing up straight again. “Long, I cancelled all the wedding shit.” I say throwing my lunchbox and jacket into my locker. “Oh, I'm sorry Jude. “ She whispers, placing her hand on my bicep. Her touch is light and soft. She gives it a light squeeze as the door opens again. This time it's Jamie. Victoria drops her hand quickly. Jamie looks at the both of us for a second before putting her hand out to Victoria. “ Hi! You must be Victoria. I'm Jamie. I'm so sorry I wasn't here the last few days, sick kids. What can you do?” She introduces herself. “Hi! Yes. I'm Victoria. Oh no. Sick kids are awful! But sick men are worse!” She laughs at her own lame joke. Jamie laughs too “Hold on! What are you trying to say??” I say looking to Victoria. “Oh, you don't know men are giant babies when they get sick?” She says the laughter erupted again from her. “What? We are not?” I defend my gender. “Are too.” She says sticking her tongue out at me. “Wow! Who's the giant baby?” I ask, raising my eyebrows. Victoria smacks my shoulder. “I've seen it with my own eyes!” She says holding her hand up like binoculars. “Well, are you ready to learn the fascinating station of final packaging?? It's the best station” Jamie interrupts closing her locker. Huh? I forgot she was even here. Weird. “Absolutely?” Victoria says following Jamie out of the locker room. She catches the door,” See you at lunch.” She sends me a smile before waking away. As I sit at my desk, I turn on the computer and spin my chair around to look at the pallets of boxes that sit before me. Ugh, it's going to be a long day. Fingers crossed I get it done on time so I don't have to work late. It's a five hour drive to my parents house. If I get off on time it'll probably be almost eleven pm before I get there. So I put in my ear buds and start the music. I lose myself in work, before I know it someone's tapping on my shoulder. "Are you working through lunch?" Victoria stands there closer than I expected when I turned around. "Uhh, no?" I say pulling the ear buds out. "I wouldn't let you even if you were thinking about something so crazy." she says pointing to her temple. "Yeah I don't work for free." I chuckle as I stand and stretch my back. I feel a breeze across my abs as my shirt rides up. Victoria's breath hitches audiblely. I look at Victoria slightly shocked at her reaction but her cheeks are the perfect shade of pink. She just checked me out. " Well, if you're done eye f*****g me. I'm famished!" I say watching her cheeks go to a deeper maginta. "Shut up!" she says before walking away so fast she might as well run. I can't help but laugh at her as she disappears down the hall. That's what I thought.
