The Unlikely Revelation

Theresa fell asleep for a good couple of hours beside Chad. She looked at his watch. It was 4:30 AM. She needed to go home. She wanted to stay but her father was expecting her for breakfast.  She slowly removed Chad’s arms over her stomach. She carefully crept out of bed to avoid waking Chad up. When she was at her feet, she looked at Chad endearingly. What a handsome man Chad was. She took a pen and a piece of paper from her bag and wrote him a note. “Didn’t want to wake you up. Need to have breakfast with my Dad. Call me when you wake up.” She scribbled her personal phone number at the end of the note. She carefully tucked the piece of paper on the book that Chad was reading. She wanted to kiss Chad but decided not to. She tried to be as quiet as possible when she got out of Chad’s private room. Theresa silently drove home. After less than an hour, she was already there. Her father was already awake. “You didn’t come home last night?” His father was drinking coffee by the pool. He was clearly waiting for her. She usually enters the home through the door from the pool house whenever she parks her car in the garage. “Yes, it was a busy night at the hospital.” It was true. She didn’t feel the need to tell him that she slept overnight beside her patient. A patient who also happens to be his boyfriend too. “Do you want me to prepare breakfast for you?” His father asked. “That would be nice. I’ll just change into a bathing suit and take a quick swim.” She answered back. “Alright then, I’ll ask the maids to serve breakfast here. Theresa headed to her room. She laid in bed and closed her eyes. She can still smell Chad’s scent on her. Even with a few hours of sleep, she still felt rested. In fact, it was one of the most relaxing sleep she had in months. She got up from her bed and changed into a one-piece swimsuit. Theresa wore a robe on top and tied her hair in a bun. She took her phone and then went back downstairs where the pool house was located. When she arrived there, her father was not back. Maybe he was cooking breakfast for her. It was too early after all and maybe the maids are still in bed. Her father always enjoyed cooking for her during early mornings like this one. She removed her robe and carefully hung it on one of the chairs in the pool. She walked towards the end of the pool, the one where the water is at its deepest. When he was right in the middle, she dove into the water. Theresa has always enjoyed swimming since she was a kid. She was even a part of the varsity swimming team when she was studying at the university. If she didn’t become a doctor, she could have pursued swimming professionally. She was on her third lap when the sun began to appear on the horizon. Theresa was swimming but her mind was elsewhere. She was thinking of the right opportunity on how she will introduce Chad to her father. She needs to do it fast before her father ends up getting her another date with some guy that he thinks would be great for her. Theresa was thinking of scenarios. Maybe she’ll ask Chad to come and visit her, after a few visits, she could then introduce him to her dad. Maybe he could set up a dinner for the two to meet. It would be in a public setting and things wouldn't be so awkward. Theresa was already on their seventh lap when her dad arrived with one of the maids. The maid was pushing a serving cart with their breakfast. Her dad did the cooking. As usual, it was a complete meal, something a busy doctor like her needs to keep her energy last throughout the day. It had bacon, eggs, bread, a cup of rice, her favorite baby carrots, and sliced mangoes. Her father also prepared green tea, her favorite. Theresa was so busy with finding ways on how to introduce Chad to her father that she failed to notice when the maid left after setting up their breakfast on the table by the poolside. She even failed to notice when her phone began to ring. “Darling your phone is ringing.” Her dad called her out. Theresa’s brain was somewhere else so she failed to hear him. His dad was used to answering her phone calls. She rarely gets one unless it was from the hospital. Thinking it was an emergency, her dad took the call. “Hello, Dr. Reed’s phone.” Her dad answered. “Ah, hello, this is Chad, may I speak to Theresa?” Chad was caught off guard when a man answered Theresa’s phone. Was she with someone else? It was then that Theresa noticed that her Dad had her phone. She quickly swam to the edge of the pool. “Who is calling, Daddy? She almost shouted from the other side of the pool. Chad heard Theresa’s voice and was somehow relieved that it was the father’s doctor who answered the phone and not some other guy. “It’s Chad.” Her dad took her robe and handed it to Theresa who was already out of the water. “Who is Chad?” Her dad whispered but Chad still managed to catch it over the other line. Theresa motioned his dad to stay silent. “Hello,” Theresa said to the phone. “Hi, you left early.” Chad’s voice sounded bright. “Yes, I promised my Dad I’ll have breakfast with him today,” She felt the need to explain. “Oh, that's nice.” Chad paused, “What time will you be back in the hospital?” “I am off duty today but I think I can come and visit later today.” She answered, her dad was trying to listen to their conversation. He was trying to put his ear close to the phone. Theresa was slightly laughing. His Dad was trying to be funny but is prying at the same time. “Who is Chad,” her dad whispered to her again. “Alright then, I guess I'll see you later, or maybe tomorrow. You rest and spend time with your family.” Chad genuinely wanted her to enjoy her day off, but he also wished that he could get to see the doctor again. “Alright then, bye.” Theresa had to end his call. Her dad was really trying to overhear their conversation. Chad looked at the phone. His nurse was changing her bandages. “I told you, it's the doctor’s day off today.” She paused. “But do not worry, the doctor will be here tomorrow. She has a scheduled angioplasty and bypass tomorrow.” The nurse gathered her things and excused herself. “Push the button if you need anything today, Mr. Alberty.” Chad ate his breakfast alone. His dad was not going to visit him today because of the newborn ponies. It definitely felt lonely today. How he wished to get out of the hospital. But he needs to stay for a week more tops just to make sure that his operation went really smoothly. He barely finished his breakfast. Chad grabbed his book instead and continued on reading. Meanwhile, breakfast at the Reed’s was extra fun and noisy today. Theresa’s dad, Edward, kept bugging her about Chad. “So tell me more about this Chad. Where did you guys meet?” Edward inquired. “Dad, could you just drop it.” Theresa felt that it was too early for her to tell her dad that Chad happens to be her boyfriend. “Come on, would just spill the beans.” Her dad teased. “Fine, Chad is a patient in the hospital.” She revealed. “Just a patient?” Her dad asked. “He gave me flowers the other day.” Theresa might as well give her dad a few details. She knew her father. He won’t stop asking unless she gives her a few details enough to satisfy his curiosity. “That sounds nice. Every woman deserves flowers.” His dad sounded casual. “What is he at the hospital for?” “GSW, he was part of the group that tried to save this girl that has been kidn*pped for one. The bullet was for the girl but he shielded her from it.” She narrated. “Oh, there is a girl. Heroic and impressive, but the girl, who is the girl for this Chad?” Now, she felt that her father was starting to interrogate Chad through her. “Chad was with the girl’s boyfriend, fiance I guess, that’s what I heard from the nurses in the hospital”. What she said was true. Chad wouldn’t agree to be his boyfriend unless she and Chad have something going on. “So single?” Her dad asked. “I think so,” She quickly answered. “I didn’t see anyone else visiting him.” She added that information. “So you have an idea on who visits this Chad at the hospital?” This time, her dad sounded playful again, teasing her. Her phone rang. Thank God, an excuse to finally stop this interrogation from her father. She answered the call, “Ok then, I will be there 30 minutes tops.” She looked at her Dad, apologetic. Her dad already knew that look. She pressed the end call button and drank her tea before kissing her Dad on the cheeks. “I am sorry, there is an emergency at the hospital. I need to do an emergency bypass.” She informed him. “Be careful when you drive. Call me when you are done.” Her dad said, slightly disappointed that their fun warning was interrupted. “I will dad, and I’ll head back home as soon as I am done.” She said while she walked back to her room to change. ---- At the hospital, Theresa went straight to the operating room to scrub in on her surgery. She spent a good four hours fixing her patient's heart. She took blood vessels from the arm of her patient to perform the coronary artery bypass. After the successful operation, she decided to check on Chad before heading home. She carefully opened the room and realized that Chad was taking a nap. Theresa quietly walked towards his bed and watched him sleep. She wanted to touch his hair, remove a few strands that were on his face but she was afraid that she might wake him. She was about to leave but Chad called her. “Hey, you’re here.” His face lit up. “Sorry, did I wake you?” Theresa went back to sit beside his bed. “No, it was a slow day. Dad is busy with the newborn ponies. I did not have visitors today.” Chad told her. It sounded like he was looking for company. “Ponies?” Theresa was interested. “You have ponies?” “Yes, two ponies were just born on our farm. You want to see them?” “If you will take me,” Theresa said smiling. Chad took her hand and kissed the back of it. He was not content. She missed Theresa. He gently pulled her and met her lips with a kiss. Theresa kissed back. To their surprise, the door of the room opened, it was nurse Jane. “Oh, sorry, I forgot to knock.” The nurse blushed a little and was about to pull the door shut again. “What is it?” Theresa asked, she was blushing too. “Your father is here.” nurse Jane informed her.
