Sam was angry. Really angry. The information he had collected was starting up at him. Taunting him. He couldn't believe she would keep something like that from him. He should have been told. Why didn't she tell him.
Sam had been working on the same office building as Jess for over a week. Yet she was still pretending not to know him. Worse he knew she was hiding something. He just hadn't thought it was what he had just compiled in the folder in front of him.
It was time for them to talk. He wouldn't put it off anymore. This was it. No more waiting.
"Have a seat Jessica. We need to talk." Sam pointed to the chairs on the other side of his desk.
"What's this about?" Jessica asked as she sat down. She knew what though. She really did. She was just wishing that if she asked it would change things.
"Well that's what you are going to tell me," was Sam's reply. "So, three years. Have anything to tell me?"
"Ah, like what?" Jess was trying to look confused but wasn't sure she could pull it off.
Sam shook his head. "Jess, or should I say Jessica? Do you make it a habit to sneak out of men's rooms in the early hours of the morning?"
"What did you expect Sam? I was drunk the night before and woke up in a strange bed with a strange man. Did you really expect me to stay?"
"Well I didn't expect you to sneak out."
"Okay. Fine Sam." Jess was a bit angry now. "But I had never done that before. I had no idea what I was supposed to do. I just figured you wouldn't care."
"Why do you think I wouldn't care?" was Sam's reply. "We had a really great night."
"A great night yes. But one night stands don't normally end in morning afters."
Sam looked at Jessica. She stared back at him. He was a bit surprised to see the look on her face. She seemed to be angry at him. He had no idea why. Plus knowing what he currently knew, who was she to be angry. She was the one keeping secrets.
Sam retrieved a file from his desk and handed it to her. "What do you know about this?"
Jessica took the file from it and opened it. As soon as she saw the picture attached to the inside cover she started to feel light-headed. She tried her best to mask her reactions but she knew she was failing miserably. She turned the pages one by one, not saying anything and trying to compose herself. 'How do I get out of this she thought?' She had no idea how she would. She knew she should have told him the truth before, but she just wasn't sure of him.
Jessica gave a gasp of shock when she turned the next page. It was a picture of her mother and her son together in the backyard. She had him on the swings.
"How did you get these?" she asked. "Were you having me followed? You had someone in my yard? What kind of sick person are you?"
Jessica wasn't just angry now. She was outraged. Anything could have happened to them. If someone could have gotten that close to take a picture, they could have gotten even closer to hurt them. It didn't go unnoticed to her though that she was using her anger to mask her real feeling, guilt.
