The sun was sinking lower in the sky, the golden light fading to amber as it crept beneath the thick canopy of trees. I heard the distant sound of rushing water somewhere off to the left. I didn’t need to look back to know that Elara was struggling too. I urged us to go closer and drink water for strength. I slowed my pace, glancing over my shoulder. Elara was trailing behind, her breath shallow and labored, her face flushed with exertion.
