Chapter Seventeen: The Obsidian Gates

745 Words
The dust slowly settled, revealing a landscape transformed. The rust-colored dunes had been fused into jagged, glittering fields of uneven glass by Elian’s fire. The air was entirely still, completely stripped of the Blood-Weaver’s suffocating magic. At the end of the glass field, partially excavated from the side of a massive red mesa, stood the entrance to the Sun-Vault. It was a breathtaking architectural marvel, standing fifty feet tall. The gates were forged from a seamless slab of white marble, heavily inlaid with intricate, geometric veins of pure gold that pulsed with a faint, rhythmic heartbeat. But the sacred site was tainted. A sprawling encampment of Abyssal Cultists surrounded the entrance, their tattered crimson robes stark against the pristine white stone. Scaffolding had been hastily erected against the gates, and dozens of cultists were currently chanting, attempting to force corrupted black ice into the golden seams to pry the vault open. Kaelen rose to his feet, pulling his broadsword from the earth. The blackened steel practically hummed with lethal anticipation. He looked down at Elian, who was already standing, his breathing heavy but his golden eyes fiercely determined. "They haven't breached it yet," Kaelen noted, his voice a cold, tactical whisper. "The marble is entirely intact. But there are over fifty Cultists in that camp, and heavily armed mercenaries guarding the perimeter." Elian brushed a layer of dust from his ivory tunic, the fabric catching the harsh desert sun. He didn't look at the mercenaries; his gaze was locked entirely on the chanting priests desecrating the gates of his ancestors. "We do not need a tactical infiltration, Inquisitor," Elian said, the liquid fire in his veins beginning to rise once more, turning his pale skin into a map of molten gold. "We are going to walk straight through the front door." Kaelen felt that familiar, dark thrill race down his spine. He stepped up flush against Elian’s side, his shadow-magic bleeding out to weave perfectly between the Weaver’s radiant aura, creating an intimidating, swirling vortex of absolute light and pitch darkness. They descended into the encampment not as fugitives, but as a catastrophic force of nature. The perimeter guards noticed them first. A shout rang out, and a dozen mercenaries charged forward with drawn steel. Kaelen didn't even break his stride. He swept his non-sword hand in a brutal arc. Tendrils of thick, hardened shadow erupted from the glass floor, violently wrapping around the mercenaries' ankles and slamming them face-first into the unforgiving ground before they could take another step. The Cultists finally broke their chant, turning toward the intrusion. A barrage of putrid black ice and crimson blood-spears was immediately launched at the approaching duo. This time, Kaelen didn't need to build a defensive dome. He and Elian fought in perfect, unspoken synchronization. As a volley of black ice closed in, Elian threw a casual arc of thermal energy, instantly flashing the ice into harmless steam. When a Cultist attempted to flank them with a life-draining whip, Kaelen’s broadsword blurred through the air, severing the magical tether and the Cultist’s hand in one fluid, brutal motion. They tore through the camp like a scythe through dry wheat. Kaelen was the impenetrable shield and the lethal blade, his shadows swallowing every counter-attack, while Elian was the devastating artillery, his golden fire incinerating the Cult’s barricades and reducing their corrupted magic to ash. Within minutes, the courtyard before the Sun-Vault was dead silent. The surviving Cultists had fled into the dunes, utterly broken by the sheer, astronomical power of a Weaver and an Inquisitor fighting in perfect tandem. Elian stepped up to the massive white marble gates, his golden eyes reflecting the pulsing, intricate gold veins. He reached out, pressing his bare palm flat against the center of the seal. "Blood of the First," Elian whispered in the ancient tongue of Aethelgard. "I have returned." The golden veins flared with a blinding, euphoric brilliance. The massive marble gates, sealed for a thousand years, slowly, silently began to swing inward, revealing a cavernous depth that radiated a warmth so pure it brought Kaelen to a dead halt. The darkness inside was not the terrifying, suffocating void of the Abyssal Cult. It was a deeply comforting, starlit twilight. Elian looked back over his shoulder, extending a glowing hand toward the Inquisitor. "Come, Kaelen," Elian said softly, the fierce warrior melting away to reveal the deeply empathetic man underneath. "Let me show you the true light of my people."
