They left the exhausted horses tethered in the tree line and approached the town on foot. The unnatural silence of Oakhaven was deafening. The cobblestone streets were coated in a thick, black frost that seemed to breathe.
Kaelen drew his broadsword, his magic bleeding from his cloak to cloak them both in a veil of imperceptible shadow. "Stay close," he whispered, his voice a vibration in Elian’s mind through the magical tether they shared. "Do not flare your light until we see the ritual's epicenter."
They moved like ghosts through the alleys, eventually reaching the edge of the town square. In the center, where the Broken Anvil once stood, a massive crater had been blasted into the earth, exposing the ancient catacombs below. Dozens of Abyssal Cultists in tattered crimson robes knelt around the jagged rim, chanting in a guttural, forgotten tongue. At the center of the pit, suspended in a cage of black ice, was an ancient, enormous skeletal remains radiating a nauseating aura.
"We cannot let them complete the chant," Kaelen signaled, his amber eyes locking onto the high priest leading the ritual.
Elian didn't need further instruction. He dropped the shadow-veil.
The young Weaver stepped into the open, his hands igniting not with a gentle dawn, but with a terrifying, white-hot solar flare. He unleashed a sweeping arc of pure plasma that cut through the frozen square, instantly incinerating the kneeling cultists on the outer ring. The high priest shrieked, raising a barrier of black ice, but Kaelen was already moving.
The Inquisitor vaulted over a crumbling wall, utilizing Elian's blinding light as a distraction. Kaelen’s shadows condensed into sharp, physical blades extending from his broadsword. He struck the high priest from the flank, his blackened steel tearing through the ice barrier and cleaving the priest's staff in two.
But the ritual had already awakened the bones. The massive skeleton in the pit twitched, its hollow eye sockets flaring with a sickly green fire. The ground trembled violently, throwing Kaelen off balance.
"Kaelen, move!" Elian screamed over the deafening roar of the crumbling earth.
The skeletal monstrosity lunged upward, its massive bone claws swiping at the Inquisitor. Kaelen rolled desperately, but the sheer force of the blow shattered the cobblestones beside him, sending shrapnel tearing into his thigh. He grunted, his shadow-ward absorbing the worst of the impact, but he was pinned down by the falling debris.
Elian’s golden eyes widened in terror. The Weaver didn't throw fire; he pulled the ambient heat from the entire town square, condensing it into a microscopic, terrifying sphere of energy in his palms. He sprinted toward the edge of the pit, throwing himself directly between the undead monstrosity and Kaelen.
"You do not touch him!" Elian roared. He slammed his glowing hands directly onto the skull of the ancient beast.
