CHAPTER NINE: THE SILENT KEEP

247 Words
The violent howling of the Winter Wilds began to subside, leaving a haunting, ringing silence in the courtyard of the shattered armory. Kaelen’s breathing eventually stabilized, the icy grip of the Blood-Weaver’s magic retreating under the relentless, golden warmth pouring from Elian’s hands. He pulled himself up, using his heavy broadsword as a crutch, his amber eyes scanning the decimation they had wrought. The black stone of the fortress was scarred by scorching heat and dark frost. Elian stood beside him, the radiant light fading from his veins until he looked entirely human again, though the exhaustion was evident in the heavy slump of his shoulders. Without a word, Kaelen draped his heavy, fur-lined cloak over the Weaver’s shivering frame, pulling the collar snug against the biting cold. They moved deeper into the keep. The iron-wrought braziers lining the grand hall were unlit, but Kaelen’s shadows slithered along the walls, acting as his eyes in the pitch black. At the far end of the chamber, upon a massive tactical table, lay a singular, pristine parchment map completely untouched by the c*****e outside. Kaelen brushed away a layer of frost to reveal jagged red ink circling three distinct locations across the remnants of Aethelgard. "This wasn't an isolated rogue faction," Kaelen said, his voice a grim rumble echoing off the vaulted ceiling. He pointed a gauntleted finger at the coordinates. "This was a coordinated vanguard. The Abyssal Cult is attempting to resurrect the old god of the Maw."
