Chapter 2 Buried Promises

745 Words
Aurora Island was beautiful. Nearly every step revealed a different scenic view. The fountain had been specially designed by a famous architect Adrian had invited from overseas, sculpted in the likeness of the two of them. The Juliet roses placed in the ceramic vase were Sophie's favorite flowers. They were replaced with fresh ones every day, their petals still carrying drops of morning dew. The camphor trees in the backyard had been airlifted from abroad. The one standing at the very center had been planted by Adrian himself to commemorate the day they first met. Beneath the tree, the two of them had buried a time capsule together. Sophie stopped the servants who wanted to help and dug the capsule out herself. Back then, Adrian had refused to let her look inside, saying it would only have meaning if they opened it ten years later. Sophie had laughed at the rare shy expression on his face and thought it was adorable. But now, when Sophie looked at the note written in Adrian's own handwriting, she let out a cold laugh. Just as she had guessed, the time capsule had never been meant for her. It had been meant for Veronica. Even when she had been standing right beside him, Adrian's heart had always belonged to Veronica. There was only a single short sentence written on the note. "Ten years from now, you must have married Veronica. Don't forget to treat her well. And remember to keep Sophie under control." Sophie let out a soft scoff. She lit the note with a lighter and tossed the time capsule into the trash. Then she took the axe a servant handed her and began striking the camphor tree they had planted together, blow after blow, until the tree finally collapsed, leaving behind only a bare stump. After that, she smashed the fountain as well. Only when it had completely shattered did she wipe the sweat from her forehead and step over the scattered fragments as she walked back into the villa. She packed up every piece of valuable jewelry and every luxury handbag in the walk-in closet and sent them all to a luxury resale boutique. At first the shop suspected the items were fake. But when they saw the receipts, they quickly calculated the price and transferred the payment. Altogether, the amount reached seven figures. She then threw the matching ceramic cups Adrian had once made himself, the stuffed toys he had brought back from his business trips, every intimate photograph they had taken together, and even the fake marriage certificate she had once treasured so dearly into a metal basin. She watched as the flames slowly devoured every memory they had shared. An indescribable feeling filled her chest. Just as she finished cleaning everything up, Adrian hurried back with a worried expression, carrying a box of sweet pastries. Out of habit, he held one of the still-warm pastries to her lips. "The servants said you were chopping trees and smashing the fountain. What happened? Are you in a bad mood?" He lifted the pastry slightly closer to her mouth. "You love these pastries. They're still warm. Try one." "Oh right," he added casually. "You said you had a surprise for me today. What is it?" Looking at Adrian's concerned expression, which seemed no different from usual, Sophie suddenly had the urge to expose all his lies. She wanted to ask him whether he had truly felt nothing for her over these past three years. She also wanted to tell him that she was pregnant. But before she could speak, Adrian's phone rang. She vaguely heard someone urging him to come back quickly, mentioning words like "crying" and "newlywed". It was probably Veronica. Left alone on her wedding day, she must have grown impatient. Adrian immediately stood up. "I'll come see you tonight," he said before rushing out and driving away from Aurora Island. Sophie opened Veronica's social media page. Just as expected, she saw the official wedding announcement. "After all these years together, we finally made it official." It was a carousel post with nine photos from Veronica's wedding. Adrian's full face never appeared, but his familiar profile, the watch on his wrist, and the suit Sophie had personally chosen for him all proved that what she had seen earlier that day had not been a dream. Sophie lay on the bed as tears slid from the corners of her eyes. Adrian... you really are heartless.
