Early the next morning, Sophie went to the hospital for surgery.
She loved children and had once looked forward to this baby more than anything. But now, the child had come at the wrong time.
The procedure ended quickly. Still weak, she slowly walked down the corridor, preparing to leave the hospital.
Halfway down the hallway, she suddenly ran into Veronica.
Veronica looked pale.
The moment she saw Sophie, she quickly pushed Adrian away from her side and spoke in a flustered voice. "Sophie, don't misunderstand. I just had a stomachache, so Adrian brought me here for a checkup. But... could you please stop following me?"
By the time she finished speaking, her voice sounded weak.
Adrian froze when he saw Sophie and was about to ask what had happened.
But when he heard Veronica's words, he stopped in his tracks. His gaze turned sharp as a blade as it locked onto Sophie. "You've been following her?"
"The money I give you every month isn't for you to harass Veronica," he continued coldly. "Sophie, what happened between you and Veronica was years ago. Just some conflicts back in college. Do you really have to hold onto them like this?"
Sophie stared at him in disbelief.
"I was the one whose head was shoved into a toilet. I was the one forced to kneel. She almost disfigured my face and nearly destroyed my feet so I would never dance again. And you're calling me petty?"
He knew perfectly well that back then she had been pushed into depression. There had been nights when she stood on the edge of a rooftop, wondering if ending everything would be easier.
And now he was casually blaming all of that on her?
How could he?
Before Adrian could respond, Veronica suddenly clutched her head and collapsed onto the floor, curling up as if terrified. "P-please... Sophie, don't hit me. I'm sorry. I was wrong. Please don't hit me again."
Her trembling voice immediately drew the attention of people nearby.
Someone gasped, "Oh my God, isn't that Veronica Whitmore? The internationally famous ballerina?"
"What happened to her?" another person asked.
"Someone like her getting bullied? That's horrible."
Someone who had seen part of what happened earlier suddenly pointed at Sophie. "It's her. I heard Veronica say her name. She's been stalking her too. That's disgusting."
The crowd quickly became agitated.
Frightened, Sophie instinctively stepped back toward the wall. "It wasn't me. Veronica was the one who bullied me. Adrian, you know the truth. Say something!"
But Adrian wasn't paying attention to her at all.
His entire focus was on Veronica. With a pained expression, he pulled her protectively behind him.
"It's okay," he murmured softly. "Everything's fine. I'm here."
The situation quickly spiraled out of control.
No one could tell who started it, but suddenly Sophie was surrounded by Veronica's fans. Someone grabbed her hair. Someone else tore off her coat. In seconds, she was almost completely exposed.
Long fingernails scratched across her face and arms, leaving bloody marks everywhere.
Through the chaotic crowd, Sophie saw Adrian lift Veronica into his arms.
Veronica rested weakly against his chest, but when their eyes met, a triumphant smile appeared on her lips.
She silently mouthed three words. "Serves you right."
Adrian walked past Sophie without even glancing at her.
Her body trembled from the pain. Blood spread beneath her feet.
Desperate, she reached out and grabbed the hem of his coat.
"Adrian... please help me."
Adrian looked down at her.
There was not a trace of emotion in his eyes.
Instead, irritation crossed his face as he pulled his sleeve away. "Sophie, you went too far this time. Maybe this will teach you a lesson."
By the time hospital security finally arrived, the floor beneath Sophie was already soaked with blood.
She was rushed into the emergency room.
The last thing she remembered before losing consciousness was Adrian's cold, expressionless face as he walked away.
