Paul stared at Alisha like she reminded him of the past. Her blue eyes and long dark hair were extremely eye-catching such that he thought of the very first time he met Emily. It got him thinking of that moment when he saw her and had fixed his gaze on her for a very long time.
Alisha felt Paul's stare all over her and became very uncomfortable. She had to react.
"You do know how to stare at a woman, don't you?." she said adjusting herself repeatedly in her chair.
"It's that you remind me of the first time I met Emily." he said still fixing his gaze. "And I stared at her in the exact same manner."Alisha adjusted her voice and sat straight.
"I'm a Police officer interrogating you. I'm not Emily." she told him. Paul smiled at her response and continued what he was saying.
"A few days later, we hooked up. Then within a matter of months, we got married." Paul seemed lost in thought as he said that. Alisha looked at him rapidly and bent down to take notes.
"And what is that supposed to mean?" she asked while writing.
"I understand the power of connecting with people." he said, "And I feel we can have a strong connection." Alisha stared boldy at him.She got up and walked around the table for a few seconds before placing both hands on the table while standing next to him.
"Me and you have a connection?" she asked staring into his eyes. Paul nodded. "And Emily?"
Shane was staring at Emily as she talked and thoughts of their common past flooded his mind. He gulped from time to time as his mind raced back to those moments. Emily noticed it.
"Shane I'm under interrogation you know that?" she asked noticing his gaze.
"I know that." he replied
"Then keep the past out of it." she told him
"I'm not bringing it up" he answered.
"You still desire me sexually and I feel it, Shane." Shane was lost at what to say as he knew Emily had guessed right. Even though they had gone their separate ways, this encounter had brought back feelings for her.
"I haven't said that, Emily." he said in defense.
"I know. But I'm Emily Winters now,not Emily Page."
" I loved Emily page and now that she's Emily Winters, that hasn't changed. Forgive me if I'm too open about it." he said raising his eyebrows. Emily got up from her chair and carried her bag.
"Well I guess I'm done for today." she said. Shane looked at her as she used a finger to wipe her eyes. He knew she was wiping tears from her eyes. He got up and standing close to her put both hands to her cheeks.
"Look Emily, you can always continue this interrogation with my colleague." he said looking deep into her eyes.
"And you think that would change anything?" she asked also peering into his eyes. His thumb went up to her eyes and he wiped them.
"I don't know. But it might be helpful." he said. She took his hands and removed them and turned to face the door.
"You know you can't have me back Shane. Don't even think of trying." she said in a tone that sounded like a warning tone. Shane recognized the tone and got a little worried.
"I'm not asking you to betray your husband. I know you won't." he said as he held the door about to open it for her. She held his hands and looked him in the eye.
"You know me quite well Shane. I can decide and nothing on earth will stop me from going after what I want." she said.
"Yeah, I forgot that's what you did to me when you hooked up with him while we-" she interrupted him.
"Yes. So you know I can hook up with you again." Shane stared speechless wondering why she would even think of doing that.
"Really, you'd do that, Emily?" he asked gulping again.
"I will. Just don't give me a reason to want to do it." Shane slowly opened the door while he looked at her. "I'm sure Mr. Winters is very happy with you, Emily." he said as he opened the door and Emily went out of the room. As he closed the door behind him they stood in the corridor and watched as Alisha was interrrogating Paul. Emily tugged at Shane's arm.
"I'm not ready to go home yet." she said much to the surprise of Shane.
"What? didn't you say-" she quickly interrupted him.
"I know but you were making me feel...," she paused and then sighed, "You made me feel a longing for Shane again." Shane quickly left her and knocked on the door where Alisha was interrogating him.He went in and smiled at her.
"I'm through with Mrs. Winters. When you're done let me know." he told Alisha who only nodded looking at him as he closed the door.
"I'm sure something went wrong there." Paul told Alisha.
"Where?" she asked him.
"Oh with your colleague interrogating my wife." he said smiling. Alisha looked at him in surprise. She wasn't sure what it was that Paul was doing. But his constant reference to his wife got her wondering if he suspected his wife of foul play.
"You don't trust your wife do you?" she asked him.
"Emily? She's a great woman to be with. Sometimes a little too decisive." he replied
"Meaning?"
"Meaning, she wouldn't let a good thing pass by if she knew she wanted it." he said sighing.
"An opportunist you mean? Alisha asked taking notes.
"That isn't bad, but being a sentimental spoils it." he added.
"Shane. right?" she asked surprisingly. Paul looked at her and nodded his head slowly.
"How did you come to that conclusion?" he asked her.
"I guess you weren't happy with him interrogating her." she replied, "as I guess it reminds you of the past." she replied. He nodded.
"it's why I feel you and I can have a connection." he said
"Why?" Alisha asked curious to know what his line of argument was.
"Cos you're not a sentimental like Emily." Alisha looked squarely at him. He then stretched his hand out and took her hands.
"I'm sorry I'm taking my chances here. But I see someone I can finally trust and have enough discretion with, enough to confide some stunning details I wouldn't think of ever revealing." Paul removed his hands slowly while smiling. Alisha looked at him. Her one thought was to continue the interrogation, but then decided agaisnt doing so.
"Mr. Winters? I guess that will do for today." she said.
"Thank you." he said as he got up. Alisha got up and watched as he left the room. She wasn't sure how the interrogation would end but she knew Paul was taking her out of the path of the investigation. She went out to meet Shane who had just bid the Winters goodbye.
"Hey how did it go with her?" she quickly asked.
"She's taking me offtrack-"
"Yeah just like the husband." Alisha interrupted. Shane looked at her while he remembered Emily's last words:"I will. Just don't give me a reason to want to do it."
He shrugged at the thought of it. He was tempted but knew he was investigating Emily and her husband. Both of them stared as Emily and her husband left the Police station.
