Finally back home, Emily felt relieved that the day was about to end. It was close to six in the evening when they got home and once inside the house, they both headed for the sitting room.
Emily removed her shoes much to the surprise of her husband who had never seen her do that. He looked at her with wide-open mouth as he sat down.
"Don't look at me like that, dear." she said walking past him. She got herself a glass of wine and went to sit down placing both legs on the sofa. Paul kept staring at her,It made her feel a little uneasy.
"Paul is there something wrong with me?" she asked
"I'm surprised you're without shoes. Is there something I should watch out for?"
"I'm still a young woman for your information."
"Well I'm not sure all forty-year olds do this." he said looking at her and then at the shoes she left in the middle of the sitting room.
"Well, I might be of a different breed , don't you think?" she asked sipping her wine
"And since when did you learn to be different, Emily?" Paul looked at his wife from head down. While she was strikingly beautiful, he had a feeling meeting Shane again was having some kind of effect on her.
"I need a change, Paul." she said now sitting up. Paul smiled at her almost laughing.
"And that change came so suddenly right?" he asked staring at her
"What are you talking about?" Paul frowned at the question and didn't answer. But Emily guessed what he meant.
"It's Shane, right?" she said slowly. Paul remained silent.
"Paul?" Paul looked at her and blinked.
"So what if it was him?"
"I'm highly disappointed in you, Paul." she said. A feeling of guilt forced Paul to come closer to her and hug her.
"I know you are. But to say the truth, you've been acting quite strangely since you met him again." Emily looked deeply into her husband's eyes. For a moment it felt like she was looking into Shane's eyes. She knew Shane would reach out with a kiss, but Paul just stared at her. She blinked.
"You're jealous, Paul. You are just jealous." she said. Paul moved away from her and got up.
"Where are you going?" she asked seeing him get up.
"Going out. I need to think for a while." he said. He left the house banging the door. Emily got herself another glass of wine and then sat down again. Thoughts of the gun came to her mind.
Her thinking that there was some kind of foul play now became much stronger. She knew the investigation was going on and she and her husband were being interrogated. But she realized that much of the focus was on the house and it's value. Why the house and not the gun? she asked herself.
As she sat down thinking, she was beginning to feel that the gun was placed where the police could find it on purpose. It made sense, she told herself. She thought back at the rapid sequence of events.
She noticed how the Police quickly changed from pursuing the suspect to focusing on the gun they found. She also noticed they were precise in finding the spot where the gun was placed without much effort. Emily was now convinced someone had purposely put the gun there.
But who and why? she asked herself. She didn't want to believe it was Paul her husband, who had put it there. And besides, the gun had been fired quite recently. Who was killed and why? Emily sighed as she thought about the events.
Her hope of leaving Wilkan County was put on hold all because of the incident. She wanted to settle down elsewhere and forget about the unpleasant occurences of the past.
And while leaving the County was put on hold, she had to deal with the fact that Shane was around her again through the investigation. The old sparks were slowly returning and this was something she just couldn't admit to her husband.
She had openly told Shane he shouldn't give her a reason to want to hook up with him again. But thoughts of him were showing up and getting stronger.
She took her phone and looked up his number. When she found it she hesitated a bit before calling him. When he answered and she heard his voice, she wanted to hang up.
"Emily don't hang up." he told her. Her heart was beating fast.
"I have to." she answered back.
"I know he's not in and that means you want to talk." he told her. Emily sighed.
"You know me too well, Shane."
"I know when Emily has a problem she can't keep to herself." he said.
"Right. I keep forgeting we once dated." she said
"I agree,Emily." he said.
"That's the problem, Shane." she said pausing, "that's the problem."
"What?"
"I always like sharing my problems with you."
"I guess that's because I'm a Police officer. I solve problems, crime to be precise."
"And you think I committed a crime don't you?" she asked him.
"What do you mean?" he asked quite surprised.
"You guys found a gun in my own house." she said
"Sure we did."
"So what do the reports say? Are my fingerprints on it, my husband's fingerprints?"
"That's information that's quite confidential and to which I have no answer to myself." he replied
"And you say you solve problems? Well I have a problem and you're not solving it Mr. Shane Gory." Shane laughed at hearing Emily call out his full name. He knew she was angry and was venting her anger at him. He sighed.
"I'm trying my best, I mean me and my colleague we're doing all we can. It might take some time but-"
"But in the mean time I stay hooked to this place. right?" she asked.
"Anything wrong with Wilkan County?" he asked.
"Nothing. I see my reputation going down the drain."she said, " And for what? All for a murder I didn't commit."
Shane was shocked at hearing Emily say it was a murder. He didn't think of it that way. He had always thought of it as something the suspect the Police were after, had managed to hide.
"Wait , Emily how do you know it was a murder?" he asked.
"I don't know." she sniffed. "I just have a feeling it's a murder weapon." Shane was surprised at Emily asserting the gun was a murder weapon.
"Emily, I think it would be wise not to go that way." he said.
"Shane do you solve crimes or problems?" she asked.
"I mean there's an on-going investigation. Yeah-" Shane was biting words as he really didn't know how to answer that question. But Emily quickly interrupted him.
"I have a problem and you can't solve it. A crime has been committed and that you can't solve too. Do I have to be disappointed you?" she asked.
"Look, Emily your problem is not my problem. I mean your personal problems, of course. But there's a case against you. I'm looking into that."he said immediately cutting the call.
He sighed after cutting the call as he knew Emily would continued to talk about it, giving her own analysis of the incident. He couldn't argue with her as he knew she was thinking of being framed.
But her words got him thinking differently about the whole case now. He decided to look more deeply to see if there was a truth in what she had told him.
