CHAPTER 4

SELENE EVANS I blink my eyes biting my lips before shaking my head. “Not just that, there’s something about you, Dorian. I know there’s something about you.” He moves closer to me. I stop breathing when he strokes my lips with his fingers. He brings his mouth close to my ear and I close my eyes. “Are you sure you want to know what I am… or do you just want to feel what I can do to you?” I open my eyes turning my head and finding him watching me. “I could devour you and you’d still ask for more, Selene. Does that scare you? Does it scare you to think I’m not like the others?” “I’m not afraid...” He slides his hands down my waist, going down to my hips. He pulls me against him. I can feel, with every fiber of my body, how much he desires me. His hand rises, wrapping around the back of my neck. His lips almost touch mine. “You want me. I feel it. I smell you.” I feel a heat rising through my legs, my body begging for his touch. But my brain screams at me to run. “Dorian… we can’t…” “Then tell me to stop.” I remain silent. I can’t say anything. “That’s what I thought.” He kisses me. A deep, possessive kiss. The low growl escaping his chest makes my whole body shiver. He pauses for just a second to say: “Do you still think we should annul our marriage?” he asks, his mouth almost brushing my jawline. “You can’t run from me anymore, Selene...” He kisses me once more before pressing the elevator button to make it work again. I’m leaving the company building with my mind racing. My heels echo on the cold floor of the underground garage as I grip the strap of my purse, praying to get to the car soon, to finally go home and try, I don’t know… to understand my life. The elevator doors close behind me, and the air feels even denser than usual. I’m almost at my parking spot when I hear his voice. “Selene.” I stop. My stomach twists. Jasper is leaning against a concrete pillar, shadows cutting across his face. He looks tired, deep dark circles, but his eyes still shine with that possessive look that always gave me chills — and not the good kind. “Jasper… what are you doing here?” I say, trying to keep my voice steady. He takes a few steps toward me. “We need to talk.” I take a step back. “We have nothing to talk about. You betrayed me. We’re over.” He laughs, humorless. “Do you really think I’m going to let five years of my life go just like that? Do you think it’s that easy to replace me?” “It’s not about replacing anyone, Jasper. It’s about you betraying me!” He shakes his head, furious. “Oh, yeah? So that’s it? You’re sleeping with the guy from Vegas? I’m not the only one cheating here, right?” I feel my face burn. My heart races. I try to deny it, but he looks directly at my hand, and I realize, too late, that I’m still wearing the damn wedding ring. “Come on, Selene. Our wedding is tomorrow and we can still fix everything.” “No, you don’t understand? There won’t be a wedding anymore.” “I’m not going to lose you to some i***t!” He lunges at me so fast I almost trip trying to back away. That’s when another voice appears, cold as a blade. “She said she doesn’t want to talk to you.” My heart stops. Dorian. He appears from the shadows of the garage, walking calmly, hands in the pockets of his dark coat, his gaze fixed on Jasper like he’s some disgusting thing on the floor. Jasper’s eyes widen. “You. So it’s true. You two…” He lets out a bitter laugh. “You must have started this long before Vegas, huh? Cheating behind my back!” “Don’t make it sound the same,” I say, voice breaking. “You betrayed me first, Jasper!” But he doesn’t even hear me. His eyes gleam with madness. And then I see when he pulls a gun from inside his coat, aiming directly at Dorian. “If I can’t have you, Selene, no one will.” “Jasper, no!” I scream. Dorian steps forward, extending an arm in front of me. “Go back to the building, Selene.” “Jasper, stop this!” I try to grab his arm, but he’s out of control. The shot echoes through the garage, louder than any nightclub music in Vegas. I scream, covering my mouth, waiting to see Dorian fall. But… he doesn’t fall. Dorian just slowly turns, looking at Jasper. There’s blood on his chest, staining his white shirt, but he doesn’t seem to feel pain. Jasper’s eyes widen. “What the hell is this?…why don’t you die?” He shoots again, right at Dorian’s chest. I scream even louder. The impact makes Dorian take a step back, but he still stands. “Dorian…” His face changes. His eyes become more… more golden… And there’s something else, like his skin trembles, almost expands, as if something inside him wants to get out. “Stay behind me, Selene,” he growls, but the voice no longer sounds completely human. Jasper tries to run, but Dorian lunges at him with impossible speed, almost a blur. They both fall to the ground. Dorian punches Jasper, each blow echoing like hammer strikes. I run to them, desperate. “Stop!” I shout, grabbing Dorian’s arm. “You’re going to kill him!” Dorian stops, panting. His muscles tense, and I feel the absurd heat of his body under my fingers. “You’re burning up… what’s happening to you?” He looks at me as if fighting something inside him. His voice comes out hoarse. “Stay away from me, Selene. Now. It’s safer for you.” But Jasper, lying on the ground, still manages to lift his head, bleeding from his lip. He spits blood and says, panting: “If you’re not mine, you won’t be anyone’s. I… I put a bomb in your car.” My brain freezes. “What?” “If you can’t be mine, then no one will have you!” Before I can understand, Dorian grabs me and drags me, running. The explosion comes seconds later, deafening, throwing shards and heat through the garage. I feel my body fly and then hit the ground, but before any pain hits me, I feel Dorian’s weight over me, covering me completely, protecting me like a human shield. Everything goes black. I wake up slowly. The air is cold, fresh, and there’s the smell of wood and damp leaves. My eyes blink against the soft light. I’m lying on a huge bed, covered with soft sheets. I get up slowly, my head throbbing. Around me, everything looks like something out of an old movie: heavy wooden furniture, huge windows, long curtains. A mansion. In the middle of a forest. I hear the bathroom door opening. I turn my face and there he is. Dorian. Shirtless, wet hair, droplets of water running down his chest muscles. But what paralyzes me is not just his body, which looks sculpted from marble. It’s the fact that there are no marks from the bullets. Nothing. As if he had never taken two shots to the chest hours ago. I feel a deadly chill run down my spine. “Selene, I’m glad you woke up. Or should I call you Mrs. Graves now?” “What… are you?” my voice comes out a whisper. He stops, looking at me seriously. “No one lives after taking two shots to the chest, Dorian. Something’s wrong with you. What are you… and why am I here?” Who did I marry?
