AURELIA
“But—”
I raised my eyebrows at Mireya, and her sentence was cut off instantly.
Turning to Theron, I forced a smile. “Follow me upstairs.”
“Don’t worry about your clothes, darling. I’ll pick them up for you.” My mom shot from the dining room as I pulled Theron upstairs. For me, she should just open a fashion store instead of supporting her dad with the company. But they wanted the image of a family-driven whatever.
Theron stared around my room, walking slowly. Of course, this was the first time he was setting foot in my room. When we were kids, and he cared to come to our house, I always had to go to Mireya’s room or the parlour. As teens, we only met at school, because he stopped visiting, and as adults…I gulped. I’m pretty sure all the times we met, Mireya forced him. Otherwise, since he didn’t love me, he wouldn’t have voluntarily gone on a date with me.
I folded my hands, “I hate the way you are staring at my room. It makes me uncomfortable.”
Theron looked at me. “Your room is beautiful.”
“Of course it is,” I glanced at the room. Mom put a lot of effort into it.
“Is pastel pink your favourite color? Or white?” Theron asked.
Why was he bothering about my favorite color right now?
“Your room is all decorated in pink and—”
“My favorite color is indigo,” I smirked, cutting him off.
My favorite color was black. Or maybe I didn't have one. Because the color Theron was most affiliated with was black.
I looked away.
“Not many people have indigo as their favorite.”
“I didn’t bring you in here to talk about colors, so enough of the idle talk.”
“What did you want to talk about?”
“Why are you still loitering around here?” I raised my brows. “I already told you I'm breaking up with you.”
“I was checking up on your parents,” he replied.
My eyes narrowed.
Why on earth was he checking up on my parents?
“Don’t check up on them. They are very hale, hearty, and will live for a long time, even longer than I. So you don’t have to worry about them. Now,” I raised my finger, “don’t come to my house again.”
“I’m sorry,”
I froze.
My eyes moved as Theron gulped slightly. “I’m sorry, Aurelia.”
“Sorry…for what?”
“If there’s any way I've offended you. If there is any way that I might offend you in the future, I'm sorry for it.”
I scoffed, “You don’t even know what you did wrong, so—”
“But I'm not leaving you alone, and I totally refuse to break up. If you insist,” he paused, locking his eyes with me, “then I'm going to make you fall in love with me again. I’ll become that perfect man who can win your heart again.”
“Did you really think you won my heart? What exactly did you think you did to make me hide behind walls and stare at you as a kid, Theron? Don’t kid yourself. When someone falls in love, they don’t know why, and it has nothing to do with being perfect. There’s nothing you can do to make me fall in love with you. It’s my own choice. Now, leave.”
“Aurelia—”
“Mireya told you to do this, didn’t she?” I chuckled.
“What? No.”
“Yeah, whatever,” I shrugged and walked towards the door, pulling it open. “After the gala, nothing will join us together any longer, Theron. So, stay away from me.”
“Aurelia–”
I pushed him out, twisting the key as soon as the door shut.
My back hit the door, and I sucked in a deep breath.
“I’m sorry…” his voice trailed again in my head.
Sorry…couldn’t cut it. For all the years of betrayal and deceit, sorry couldn’t cut it. The best time to tell me sorry was three years ago. When he accepted me. He should have come clean then.
I ran my tongue over my lips, moving away from the door. For whatever reason, I should never let Theron get too close to me again.
I heard my doorknob move and I stared at it, making no move to open the door.
A knock came. As expected.
“Aure…open up,”
I rolled my eyes. “I’m asleep, Mireya. Come back tomorrow.”
“I can clearly hear your voice…” she trailed off with a sigh. “Fine, I'll come back in the morning, and you'd better speak to me then.”
I heard her footsteps retreat from the door, and I walked towards the window, pulling the curtains apart.
Theron was just leaving.
One, two, three…
“Theron!”
My fingers tightened against the curtains as Theron turned. As expected.
I sucked in a deep breath, shutting the windows. There was no turning back this time.
