I followed him, partly because my parents asked me to. Kael seemed angry at the mention of his mother, he didn't even bother to be pointed at the direction of the restroom or maybe he was going to do something weird. I couldn't trust him. Not when he carried his ego like an armor— A knight in egoistic armor. Arse!
“What are you doing?” The smoke from his cigar obscured my face, but my disapproval came through loud and clear.
“Enjoying a smoke break.” He took another lazy drag still not minding that my face was right there.
“In my room? I thought you wanted to use the bathroom”
“Well I changed my mind." I frowned deeply with gritted teeth. I could finally show some visible emotions now that we were finally alone without the brooding eyes of my parent. I’d started to think I was stuck with being a robot for the rest of the evening but turns out crazy Alpha made it easy for me by coming here..
I crossed the room, plucked the cigar from his hand, and dropped it in the trash..
"Look, I understand that you are probably used to doing whatever you want, but it’s exceedingly rude to sneak off during a dinner party and smoke in your host's room. And besides even if you want to smoke, not in my room, do it outside." I took a quick swoop of the condition my room was in. Lucky for me, I only visited for the first time in a while and nothing was out of place like my room back in my personal apartment. This didn't help lessen the tension that lined my features, I wonder how I was going to put up with this vane man without dying early “Please rejoin us in the dining room. Your food is getting soggy.”
“That’s my problem, not yours.” He leaned back. “Why don’t you join me for a break? I promise it’ll be more enjoyable than your mother’s hand wringing over wedding preparation.”
“Based on our interactions so far, I doubt it, you look like you are up to no good.” Did I just snap? Obviously I did. This Alpha got on my nerves in the worst ways possible. I took a deep breath and released it in one long, controlled exhale.“I don’t understand why you’re here, you obviously don't look interested in all this. ” I said, my voice a lot calmer. "You don’t need the money or connection with my family, and you can have any woman you want.”
“Can I?” He drawled. “What if it was you I wanted?”
My fingers curled into loose fists. “You don’t. It's super clear. ”
“You give yourself too little credit for someone so beautiful.” He rose and circled the distance around me until he stood close enough to see the pulse fluttering in my neck. Why did I just imagine him wrapping my hair around his fist to pull my head back? I was hot. The air conditioner was on. Was I sick? Maybe sick in the head for having such stupendous thought. The silence was deafening as he lifted his hand and grazed his thumb over my bottom lip. My breathing shallowed, but I didn’t move away. I stared at him, willing myself to look defiant but I doubt it was working. Not when this Alpha looked like sin itself— disturbingly tempting .
“You’re a beautiful she wolf,” He said lazily. “Perhaps I saw you at an event and was so enamored I asked your father for your hand in marriage.”
“Was that what you would be telling the media, I doubt that’s what happened.” My breath drifted over my skin. “What kind of deal did you make with my father? You don't seem to be enamored by me, infact you seem to despise everything about me and my family. So what is the deal with you and my father because I'm not buying your c**k and bull story.”
Maybe it was something I said but the sensuality of the moment died as quickly as it came. His thumb paused on the center of my bottom lip before he dropped his hand with a silent curse. I hated this man and his guts but why do I feel disappointed, even Ares protested at the loss of connection. She was on a roll this night. Maybe it was time for me to pay my therapist a prompt visit.
“You should ask your dear father that question.” His smile cut across his face “The details don’t matter. Just know that if I had any other choice, I damn well wouldn’t be getting married. But business is business, and you…” he shrugged. “You’re simply part of the deal.”
I knew darned well of my father's overly manipulative skills and I wonder what he might have done this time. With my father, it has always been one scheming to another. It was how we got to this status in the first place.
My eyes glowed with anger. “You’re an asshole.”I have been meaning to say that all evening.
"I am. Better get used to it, Lisichko, because I’m also your future husband and the Luna of my pack. Now, if you’ll excuse me…” He straightened his tux with deliberate care. “I have to return to dinner. As you said earlier, my food’s getting cold.” He brushed past me, probably reveling in the delicious taste of my indignation.
How on earth was I going to marry this man? And disobeying my parents wasn't an option. If only I could make this Alpha break the engagement himself, it would be a scandal but it was way better than spending the rest of my life with the nerve wrecking Alpha.
