Jack already knew. He could smell her scent—fresh, floral, like roses after the rain. He had noticed it back in the car, the way her perfume lingered in the air, weaving around his senses. He knew exactly what Ruby wanted from him. She placed a delicate kiss on his earlobe, doing her best to entice him, to draw him in. But Jack gently pushed her away, his eyes shining with a tenderness that seemed almost glued to her, too familiar for her to handle. This was a look he often wore—a gaze filled with infinite affection and devotion. In the past, whenever she saw this look, Jack would bend over backward just to please her. But something felt different now. Ruby blinked rapidly, shame creeping into her chest, biting down on her lower lip as if to punish herself. “Why…? Don’t you want me?”
