2- The Escape

We got a little house with a big room that seems to be a living area with a kitchen, dining table, and lounge area. There are two doors on the far side. Martha showed us the bathroom first. Seems they are not enchanting things here to function. We were taught that magic is used to serve us and thus we made sure to have running water in the bathrooms. Wonder if they will allow us to do that here too. Next Martha took us to the other door. Inside this door was a big room with three beds and each had a learning table next to it. We are sharing this house with Martha and will be going to school too. Wonder what we are going to learn there. Melia looked at me as soon as Martha went out to make us some warm milk to drink before going to bed. “Why are we here?” Melia signed and I know I need to tell her. “I am not sure but I think they are assuming that we were saved from something.” I signed and Melia’s face showed that this is messed up. I couldn’t agree more with her. “But we were taken by force.” Melia signed and I nodded at her. “Yeah, and I don’t know who I should tell about this. I don’t know if I could trust anyone here yet and besides, they are werewolves and witches. Who knows what they will do to us if we don’t listen,” I signed back at her, making her frown. Martha came back with a tray. On the tray are three cups of steaming milk. “Thank you.” Melia signed and Martha tilted her head at her. “She just said thank you.” I translated and Martha smiled at Melia before letting me take a cup. “Thanks.” I thanked her and took a sip. I am not a huge fan of milk. I like it in my coffee. Do they even have coffee? “Martha, are we allowed to use magic for everyday things or what?” I had to ask. I saw Melia watching me and thus I did not sign my question this time. “No, enchantments take a lot of our magical power, so the alpha wants us to be combat-ready rather comfortabilitymfortablitly.” Martha explained and Melia looked at me. We made eye contact. Our enchantments only last for how long we want them to. Or for how long we are going to use the object. “Even if you only let the enchantment run for a few minutes? Or an hour?” I asked and Martha suddenly frowned at me. Did I just ask something weird? “What do you mean for an hour?” She asked next and I looked at Melia who was just as surprised as me that they don’t know how to do that. “You can not control for how long an enchantment is going to be?” I needed to know a bit more. “Well, I know that the upper classes can do enchantments with mana stones. I am sorry. I meant to say that not all of us are good at enchantments. So, to give you the correct answer. Most of us are combat-ready. But some are being used for enchantments.” Martha corrected herself and I looked at Melia again who seemed to have accepted the answer. She nodded at me, and I gave her a nod back. I did not sleep well. To many unfamiliar sounds. Hearing wolves near our house is a little scary. I might have magic but it is still scary to know that a wolf is close by. They might also be shifters but you never know what is going on in the head of a werewolf just like you can not know what a real wolf is thinking. I couldn’t stop my yawning this morning. “Couldn’t sleep?” Melia signed as I was using some of the coffee and sugar I always have in my magic pocket. I saw the milk was finished, so I used the milk I had. Luckily my magic pocket does not allow things to expire. That is a useful thing to have when I am putting food in it. “Yeah, the new noises kept me up. Hearing four legs close to the house is a bit hard to ignore for now,” I signed back to Melia and she nodded at me, smiling with sympathy. “Good morning.” Martha is finally up. I just placed a cup of coffee in front of Melia. “What is that strange smell? I find it pleasant.” Martha sniffed the air as she walked closer. “Coffee. Do you want some? I will make it for you.” I asked Martha, trying to be friendly. “Yes, please. I would love to try it.” Martha smiled at me. I can see that she is excited about this. Melia gave me her evil grin. I already know what she is trying to say with that smile. We are going to make Martha addicted to this stuff. I winked at her and she giggled. Martha watched my every move with eyes full of wonder. “Here you go. And be careful it is hot.” I let her take the ear of the cup. “Hot? You did not use the stove.” Martha looked at her stove and saw no fire in it. “Yeah, we use magic for these small things. I used fire and water to make hot water.” I explained to her and Martha frowned at the cup before looking up at me with that frown. “You can use magic? Even with the blocker on? And without incantations?” She asked so many questions. I watched her panic a bit. “Yes, I was expecting my magic to burn through the blocker eventually but I did not expect it to do it so quickly. Every one of us will eventually have our magic back eventually without taking the blockers off,” I explained and saw Melia signaling to me that she wanted to draw something. I let her things appear that she used to draw. She thanked me and I gave her a small nod. Not many magic users of my age can use the space magic I can just yet. So, it is normal for Melia to use me as a storage unit too. “Do you have your cell phone?” I signed at Melia after tapping on her paper to get her attention. She showed me no and I nodded at her. “I’ll create a new one when I can.” I signed and she smiled at me. Yeah, I can create things too. The cell phone idea came to me in a dream I had long ago. I believe the life I have now is not my first. I believe I lived in another world before this one. A world with technology beyond this world. I only told Melia this and she still accepted me. It was through my previous life that I taught everyone sign language in our village to make them able to communicate with Melia. That was a very joyful day for us all. Funny how I also had a deaf friend in my previous life. I can not remember everything about that life. “This is not a quill. How does this work?” Martha had a colored pencil in her hand. Frowning at it. “It is a pencil.” I replied and just watched her as Melia gave her a clean sheet of paper. “And very thin paper. How?” She frowned and I could understand her confusion about this. “Magic. I have creation magic.” I answered her as if it was normal. Most of our villagers have this ability. This is how we could live in luxury and enjoy life without worries. We did not expect to get attacked the way we did, so we had no defenses in place. I can feel anger waking up inside me. Stop it, Vorel. You need to stay calm. I need to stay calm. Melia just watched me carefully. She can use defensive magic very well. I helped her to learn it. When we were little I lost control of my emotions a lot and she was always with me, so to stop her from getting hurt, I helped her learn about shields and barriers from the elders of our village. She was just watching me to see if she would need to use her shield. “How can you create things that you have not seen before?” Martha gave the pencil back to Melia. “I create them physically before perfecting them with my magic,” I had no other way of explaining it. I don’t want to let anyone else know about my previous life. So, we are using that excuse if anyone asks about what I can create. Melia made a sound to draw my attention. I looked at her immediately. “What are we going to do today? What is going to happen?” I asked Martha as she signed for me. “We will be unblocking you for a few moments to see how strong and good you all are with your magic.” Martha smiled and I looked at Melia. “Should I ask the rest to make a run for it?” Melia signed and I could see she was busy making a plan. Well, she can use barrier magic, so that can work. I can try not to harm my people too. I did it once or twice before. It takes concentration from my side though. I can try doing that while running. I nodded at her, telling her to do it and she nodded back. “Since they can’t understand your language yet. Use it to our advantage and organize the escape,” I signed at her and Martha just frowned at us as we spoke. Melia nodded in response. “What did she want to know now?” Martha smiled at me. “She was just concerned about her wind magic not being good enough. I assured her that she is going to be okay and she shouldn’t worry too much,” I had to lie. Sorry, Martha. You seem to be a good person. I feel a little guilty for deceiving you like this. “Okay, now. When the Alpha appears, bow your heads and show respect,” Martha spoke as we all stood at the greeting grounds or the open area where he would be welcoming us to the pack. I slipped a mana crystal on our way here so that she can overload the other bracelet that is busy blocking our connection to our magic. My bracelet is already overloaded. It is now just a normal accessory. Martha did not ask about how I got coffee and milk this morning. I wonder if she was just excited about this day. She still thinks we are saved from horrible conditions. Melia moved through the crowd with no trouble and signed at them what we are planning. I will blind them all with a big flash and we all will start running, using our magic as we get away. We will kill anyone who will be standing in our way. Everyone that was brought here can use magic. I will help Melia with the escape by shifting into an animal that can carry her. She joined me again and gave me a nod and I can tell that everyone in my village is waiting on my signal. I took Melia’s hand in mine and she closed her eyes. “Eyes!!” I shouted just before I cast my light flash spell overhead. I lightly threw Melia in the air while I shifted into a black panther. I felt her grab me tightly and we all ran for our lives. We got pretty far before we heard the pack howl. They will be running after us. The forest is thick, but we also know how to move in one. This is just a normal day for us. We heard howls in front of us and the guys that can use attack magic moved in front of us. We killed the wolves with no hesitation. They bought us for no reason. Suddenly I felt Melia fall off and I shifted back. “Come on!” I pulled her up again and saw their eyes were foggy. Like she was drugged. I looked all over her body and found a dart in her shoulder blade. “Dammit!” I got her on my back again and enhanced my strength and speed. I barely reached a meadow before I felt a sharp pain in my left arm. This caused me to drop Melia again. I looked at the others and saw the darts. They are all holding their heads. I can understand why. I am starting to feel funny. In this condition, I can not use any magic. None of us will use magic since this is what we have been taught. Magic should not be used when we can not focus or control ourselves. Urg, my head is starting to spin, and my vision is foggy. I can’t focus. It feels like I am losing control over everything. What is going on? Someone help us!
