My heart was pounding and I was ready to scream. He was taking so long.
"The results are that Drew is not the father."
"Yes," I shouted as I stood up.
"But there is a family match."
"What does that mean?" My father asked.
"It means that Drew and the baby are related but the child is not his. Brother or a cousin could be the father."
"Whose the father?" Mia's father asked with an angry tone.
Mia had tears in her eyes and said, "Drew is the father."
"He is not. The test proves it. Now who is the father?" Her father asked again.
"He has to be the father. I love him."
"I don't care if you love him or not. Who is this Father's baby?" He asked again.
Mia looked at me and I nodded my head.
"Marcus," she whispered.
"Why did you pin me as the father if my brother was the father?"
"Because I love you. I hated seeing you with Sheryl and he knew that. We devised a plan and knew that night you would be drunk. If I could have gotten you to sleep with me and believe the baby was yours, then you would marry me and we could be happy together."
"But I don't love you, Mia. I love Sheryl. Did we sleep together that night?"
"No. I slept with marcus."
"Clearly."
"I'm sorry about this, Drew, and I will pay you back. Mia and Marcus need to work their crap out."
"It's fine," I said. For the first time in weeks, I felt this burden lift off my shoulders and now understood why my brother was so docile.
"Your actions have caused you to lose my trust and forced your cousin away. The man you were trying to trap nearly lost the woman he loved. You have planned a wedding for next week with no groom and have made our family look like fools. I am so disappointed in you," her father said, causing her to sob.
"I'm sorry daddy."
"We will work everything out," my dad said.
"Thank you for your help, doc. We will be out of your hair now," I said.
We all left the office and we all walked to our cars. Mia's father touched my shoulder. I stopped walking and looked at him.
"I've known where Sheryl has been since the week after she left."
"What? Why didn't you tell me?" I asked.
"Because of all the drama going on with Mia," he said as he looked at the grave.
"Well, where is she?" I asked.
"Her grandparents' house but she is a mess. She found out about the wedding and the pregnancy."
"Oh God. I will make this right," I said.
"I doubt she will come back. She has been really hurt by my daughter."
"I'll figure it out, but I'm not letting her get away."
"Good. Make her happy son and I'm sorry for the hell Mia has caused you."
"It's okay. Just don't let this affect the families. Are families have been friends since before I was born. Plus, now we share blood."
"I will."
I watched as he walked away and I smiled. I knew where she was and I was going to get her. I walked over to the truck and got in.
As we drove back towards the ranch, my father said, "I'm going to kill your brother. I can't believe he knocked her up and was going to let you take the fall."
"The truth is out, dad."
"I know that but I'm so angry at him."
"I'm sure he knows the baby is his."
"I'm sure he does and that accounts for his behavior. Aren't you upset Drew?" He asked me.
"I am, but I'm relieved the child is not mine. Plus, I found out where Sheryl is," I said with a smile.
"You did? Where is she?" He asked.
"Her grandparents' house. I need to go there and get her," I said.
"Do you think she will come back here after everything that has happened?"
"Not sure but I'm not letting her get away."
My dad and Fred started talking and I tuned them out thinking about how I was going to get Sheryl back. By the time we pulled up to the house, I had decided I speak to her grandfather and come out to the ranch with flowers and a copy of the paternity test.
"Hey Fred," I said as my dad opened the door.
"What's up?"
"Can I get a copy of the paternity test?"
"Of course. Just call the doctors office and they can give you a copy."
"Thanks."
I got out of the car and ran into the house.
"What happened?" My mother said as she saw me run in. It looked like she had been pacing back and forth.
"I'm not the father but dad will tell you all about it. I found Sheryl and I have to win her back," I said with a smile.
She came up and gave me a hug. "Best news I've had yet."
"Don't count your chickens yet. Where is Marcus?" I heard my father say.
"In his room. Why?" She asked as she pulled away from me.
"Because he is seventeen and having a baby."
"What?" My mother said as she paled.
"Marcus is the father of Mais' baby."
"How do you know this?" She asked my father.
"Drew is related to the baby and, since I don't have any siblings and just two sons, the test points to him. She even admitted he was the father trying to trap Drew."
"That little conniving s**t," my mother said.
"Mom," I said.
"Sorry, but I knew that girl was bad news. Spoiled is what she is and Nicole feeds into it."
"Apparently Marcus did as well. MARCUS, GET YOUR ASS DOWN HERE NOW." My father yelled.
Apart of me felt bad for him, but he dug his grave and now has to deal with it.
