Even though Sheryl and I were living in the same house, we were not allowed to see each other until the wedding. Since I had to work on the ranch that morning, her grandmother stood outside her door so I couldn't look in at her before heading off to work. I laughed as I walked past her door and when I returned in the afternoon, the two women had left to get ready at the neighbor's house. Needless to say, her grandmother was old-fashioned. My parents had arrived while I was working and after I showered and put some junk on, I gave them both a hug. "Congratulations honey," my mother said as she let go of me. "Thanks mom. Any word from Markus?" "I left a message about the wedding on his voice-mail. Not sure if he is listening to them or not, but I tried. Hopefully he shows," my father said. "We shall see." I wanted my brother here but I understood. "Any word on Sheryl's aunt and uncle coming?" I asked as I grabbed a glass of water. "I'm not sure. We have not spoken to them," my mother said. "Such as shame they allowed Mia to destroy the relationship they had with us." "It really is," my father said. As the day went by, I spent time with my parents and soon we all went to get ready. My mom left to get ready with Sheryl and her grandmother, while my father and I got ready. Soon guests began to arrive and my nerves were running high. After getting dressed, I walked out of the house with my dad and began to walk towards the ceremony space. "Sheryl's grandparents gave us the ranch." I looked at my dad and he smiled. "I'm happy for you son. You will do great things here." "Thanks dad." "I will miss having you around though." "I'll miss you guys, but we're not that far and we can visit." "Of course. It was nice of them to give you the ranch, but no shocker there. I know you mentioned them giving you the ranch before you left. Happy to see they went through with it." "Same here. I wasn't expecting it to happen so soon but I can't wait for her aunt and uncle to find out. They were expecting one of their sons to take it over." "What's done is done and they have no say over it. It will cause more issues between them and us, but it's them, not us." "Exactly." When we reached the ceremony space I couldn't help but smile. There were rows of people and standing at the start of the isle was my brother in a black tux. "Marcus," I whispered as I picked up my speed. When I reached him, I gave him a giant hug. "Thanks for coming." "Wouldn't miss it for the world." As soon as we were done hugging, my dad gave him a hug and said, " You coming back?" "I am. I was on my way home when you called and left the message. Came here instead." "Good. Now where the hell have you been?" My dad asked. "Took a long drive to clear my head. I spoke to the attorney the other day and I'm going to fight for custody of the baby. I'm signing the papers on Monday to take Mia to court for mental instability." "You think you have a chance to win?" I asked. "I do. She has been leaving me some horrible messages and I honestly believe the baby will not be in a safe environment in her care." "You have my back," I said as I touched his shoulder. "And mine as well." "Thanks. Anyways, enough about me. The wedding is about to start soon and you should get up there." I smiled and we all walked down the isle together. As my father and brother took their seats, I stood up at the altar next to the minister and looked at the sea of people. I did not see her aunt and uncle and, even though I was a little upset that they were being petty, but I was happy at the same time because my brother would be left alone. Suddenly, a truck appeared and my mother and Sheryl's grandmother got out and took their seats. It was time and I took a big breath because the moment was here. The music began to play and Sheryl's grandfather got out and opened the back seat. I watched as she got out and smiled. She was gorgeous and as she walked closer to me I knew I had made the right choice. She was my everything. The wedding was perfect and there was no drama. We spent the night at the local Bnb and made love. Eventually, I would take her on a honeymoon, but right now we were busy with the ownership transition of the ranch. Sheryl understood. By the end of our first week of marriage, Sheryl's grandparents announced that they would be moving out and begin their travels. We drove them two weeks later to the airport and tears were shed but they were excited. As for Mia and her family, Well, needless to say, we never heard from them. When they found out about the ranch going to Sheryl and I they were angry and never spoke to us again. My brother won custody of the baby and tried to get Mia involved in their little girl's life, but she walked away a month after the baby was born and never looked back. My brother eventually married when he was twenty-five and welcomed three more children into the world, and as for Sheryl and I well we had four sons and now several grandchildren. -Thank you all for reading, sticking to the end of this story. The next story I will be writing will be called Mine and updates will begin this upcoming week. Since I am a full-time student and mom, I will update when I can, but I try for once a week updates. Today I will get the cover and description uploaded. Down below is a sneak peak of the book.- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kayla Macintosh, It is with deepest regret to inform you that the council was unable to successfully find you a mate due to your unknown parentage. As per the law, you are to move out on your eighteenth birthday and since you will not have a mate you will be given a cottage on the far eastern side of the village. Council member Daven will meet you at first light at the cottage and inform you of what is expected of you. Sincerely, The council. The letter fell out of my hand and slowly floated to the ground as I stood there in shock. I was being ostracized because of my mother's loose morals. No one knew who my father was but I never suspected the council would use that against me, but they did. “I saw one of council members come to the door. What did they say?” My mother said as she walked in through the back door. I could hear the excitement in her voice. I turned around and looked at her with tears in my eyes. “It cannot be that bad Kayla. I am sure the man your paired with will be handsome and kind,” she said as she put the basket of fresh vegetable on the table. “I will not be given a mate, mom,” I whispered. My mother looked up at me and said, “That is not possible. Every human female is given a male human to mate with. That is their law.” “Since they do not know who my father is I will not be given a mate but I will be given the empty cottage on the far eastern side of the town.” “That cannot be. Let me see the letter,” she said with anger in her voice and her hand held out. I bent down and picked up the letter and handed it to her. She read the letter and turned pale. “We need to petition this. They cannot use the fact I don’t remember who your father is against you, plus that cottage was abandoned for a reason. Nothing can grow there and it is falling apart.” My mother's mate had died while hunting and she drank a lot afterwards. Due to her drinking, she slept around making many enemies in the village and I was the product of her drunkenness. Even though she cleaned herself up the villagers would not let me forget about her infidelity. I looked at my mother and said, “The council has spoken. Since tomorrow is my birthday, I will report to the cottage. I will make do mama.” “If only things were the way they once were, you would not be in this situation.” “It is a legend mama.” “Some tails are not always legends.” “I’ll believe it when I see proof. Not once have I seen in our travel's giant buildings or cars. The dragon shifters have always controlled us and made the laws. Stop living in la la land mom.” “Your great great great grandmother use to tell stories of how life use to be and the millions of humans who lived here. The tragedy of the planets colliding and the dragons appearing is what changed it all. They destroyed our history.” “Enough mom. If the council hears your ramblings, they will make an example out of you.” My mom walked up to me and gave me a hug. “Your brother and I will help you anyway we can.” “Thank you, mama.” That night I packed my things and the next day I hugged my mother goodbye and walked towards the cottage on the outskirts of the village.
