He drew back from the creature startled, as if from the mouth of a viper, and wiped his hands across his pants. The dragonfly did not follow. It left the dull, cold iron of the bars and settled back on her shoulder. Again, she said, “Do you know me?” “Yes,” Simon said after a pause. His voice was dreamy, his expression suddenly distant. “But I don’t know how I know you.” “Yes, you do,” she said, her voice light and teasing, her lips curled in a playful little smile. “You just don’t want to believe it.” That said she stepped back from the bars, took her seat on the edge of the cot again, and resumed her meditative vigil. “Hey, Dragonfly,” Simon said, but in vain.
