Chapter 1

Kael The rogue barely had time to react before Kael’s hand closed around his throat and drove him into the stone wall with brutal force. The impact echoed through the corridor and sent dust across the ground. The male struggled, claws flashing as he tried to shift, but Kael tightened his grip and stopped the movement before it could take hold. “You chose the wrong border to test,” Kael said, his voice low and controlled. A darker edge settled beneath it, and the rogue hesitated for a brief second before panic forced him to fight harder. Kael stepped in and slammed him against the wall again. He twisted sharply. Bone snapped, and the rogue’s body went slack in his grip. Kael released him and let him fall. The remaining rogues rushed him at once. They dropped any plan and came from both sides with fast but uneven movements. Kael met them without hesitation. He was already moving before the first strike reached him. One lunged for his side with claws aimed for his ribs. Kael caught the wrist and turned the force back on him. He pulled him off balance and drove his elbow into his throat. The second came from behind with more speed but the same lack of control. Kael pivoted into the attack and struck his jaw hard enough to stagger him. He finished the movement cleanly and gave him no chance to recover. Blood spread across the stone under the dim torchlight. The last rogue froze for a moment. It was long enough to understand that running would not save him. Kael closed the distance before he could try. He forced him to the ground and pinned him in place with steady force. The rogue fought beneath him, teeth bared and eyes wild. Kael held him down with ease. His control remained steady as his focus locked on the male. “Who sent you?” he asked, his tone quieter now but far more dangerous. His grip tightened as he waited for an answer he fully intended to take. The rogue spat blood and let out a rough laugh. He lifted his gaze with a confidence that did not fit his position. When he spoke, his voice was strained but certain as he warned that this would not end with them and that something worse was coming. Kael watched him closely as the words settled. He was already weighing what truth they might carry. He drew in a breath to press further. He meant to force more from him. The shift hit before he could act. It cut through his focus and settled deep in his chest with a force that disrupted everything else. For a moment, the fight faded. Something unfamiliar pushed into his awareness. It pulled his focus inward and demanded attention in a way nothing ever had. His grip tightened as that presence surged again. It was stronger now and impossible to ignore. It did not feel like danger. It unsettled him more than one. It did not reach outward like a threat. Instead, it settled within him, in a place nothing had ever touched. His wolf stirred in response. It was not confused. It focused instead, as though it recognized something his mind had not yet accepted. That reaction tightened the tension beneath his control. The rogue twisted beneath him and tried to break free. Kael reacted at once and forced him back down. He ended the struggle without hesitation. The corridor grew quieter as his men cleared the remaining area. Their movements were steady as they finished what was left behind. Kael remained still for a moment. His attention stayed fixed on the awareness that refused to fade. It stayed in his chest. It was steady and unyielding. There was no clear source and no direction to follow. It remained real enough that it could not be ignored. Nothing about it made sense. His wolf did not reject it. Instead, it remained subtly drawn toward it, as though something deeper was at work. Kael rose to his feet and scanned the corridor. He confirmed the threat had been handled. Outwardly, nothing had changed. His control remained intact. The awareness followed him as he stepped away. It did not fade, no matter how he forced his focus elsewhere. Somewhere beyond his reach, something had connected to him in a way that defied reason. Whatever it was, it was not going to let go.
