Oxygen inside the luxurious penthouse suddenly became an unattainable luxury for Amara. Raxus's grip on her neck did not immediately break her bones, but the pressure of his thumb right over her carotid artery sent a clear message of death. One wrong move, and Amara's breath would stop forever.
The scent of the Alpha's fury, a mix of freezing ice and sharp sandalwood exploded, filling the room. It oppressed the air until Amara's skin felt scorched by an aura of pure dominance.
"Tell me, Amara. Who helped you steal the body?" Raxus's voice was low, vibrating with suppressed anger behind a clenched jaw.
Amara gasped for air. Her sapphire blue eyes began to dim, losing the silver glint that had briefly appeared, but there was no fear in them at all. All that remained was frozen hatred.
"I... do not... know," she hissed with great difficulty. Her pale lips formed a bitter smile. "If I knew, I would not let you choke me like this. I would rather see you rot next to my father's grave."
Raxus tightened his grip. His face was only inches away, close enough to feel Amara's erratic breath. He searched for even a speck of a lie in those porcelain eyes. "Your father's corpse disappeared right from the middle of my troops. And that CCTV footage did not go dead by coincidence. Do not play games with my patience, Luna!"
"Maybe the spirits of the Silvermane clan rose to demand revenge," Amara spat out slowly, even though her breath was getting shorter. "Is the great Blackmoon Alpha starting to fear ghosts?"
"Master!" Julian, Raxus's right hand man, stepped in hurriedly. His face was pale, pressured by the wild energy his master released. "The forensic team confirmed the heat signatures in the basement warehouse were sabotaged with a high level virus. This is not amateur work or the remnants of Silvermane servants. Someone from outside the clan just sneaked into our game."
Raxus threw Amara's body roughly onto a pile of silk pillows. Amara coughed violently, her hands reflexively clutching her neck, which was now decorated with striking red marks.
"You will stay here, under my watch every single second," Raxus snapped, turning around with eyes flashing red in the dim light. "If this body theft is a distraction to take what is mine..."
“Waaah! Waaah! Waaah!”
As if responding to the suffocating tension, a baby's cry erupted from the silver crib in the corner of the room. The sound was shrill, filled with a strange agony. Julian immediately turned his head, while Raxus stood frozen. The Alpha energy that was so wild earlier suddenly snapped back, distracted by his own flesh and blood.
"Aries..." Amara whispered. A strange instinct crept into her chest, an extraordinary thirst striking her shattered Luna Core.
"Bring him to her," Raxus ordered coldly to the trembling maid in the corner by the door. His eyes remained fixed on Amara. "Calm my son, or I will truly forget that you ever had a place by my side."
Amara crawled slowly on the bed, ignoring the pain all over her body. As her hands reached for the tiny baby, a very thin resonance of energy emanated from her palms, wrapping Aries in a magical calmness. The moment their skin touched, the room that was filled with a deadly black aura began to cool down.
Raxus fell silent. He watched the scene with mixed feelings….obsession, anger, and a thirst for control. He hated the fact that only this woman, his most despised captive, could quiet the cries of his heir.
"Julian, find out who hacked the system. I want the identity of every rogue Alpha within a hundred kilometer radius on my desk in one hour!" Raxus ordered, his voice booming before he walked toward the large window overlooking the city.
However, before Julian could answer, a loud crash came from the direction of the glass balcony.
CRASH!
The thick glass shattered into pieces. A man dressed in black tactical gear with a mask covering his face darted in. In his hand, a silver dagger coated in poison gleamed under the room lights. The intruder did not aim for Raxus. His eyes were fixed straight on one target: the crib in Amara's arms.
"Die, you cursed heir!" the intruder shouted with a hoarse voice.
Time seemed to slow down. Raxus was just about to draw his weapon, but the distance was too great. However, before the dagger could touch baby Aries's skin, Amara did something illogical.
Without hesitation, she twisted her body, turning her back to the assassin and hugging Aries tightly in her arms. She made her own back a human shield.
Slash!
The dagger tore from Amara's shoulder down to her back. She let out a stifled groan, but her grip on Aries did not loosen in the slightest.
"BASTARD!" Raxus roared. In one predatory movement unseen by human eyes, he was already in front of the intruder. His large hand grabbed the man's neck and slammed him to the floor until the concrete under the carpet cracked. With one rough twist, the sound of breaking bones echoed in the room. The intruder died instantly.
Raxus panted, his red eyes slowly returning to normal as he turned to look at Amara. The woman was still sitting on the floor, trembling, with blood starting to soak her thin dress, but her eyes were only focused on Aries, who was now calm again in her embrace.
Something throbbed in Raxus's chest, an ancient connection trying to awaken seeing how Amara protected his flesh and blood. Why did she protect him? After everything I did to her?
Raxus immediately brushed the feeling aside. Maybe she just wanted to use this baby as a bargaining chip, he thought cynically.
"Julian, clean up this trash!" Raxus ordered, pointing at the intruder's corpse. "And call the medical team."
"No need," Raxus changed his mind when he saw Amara trying to stand up but stumbling. "Get out. I will take care of her."
The room fell silent again, leaving the smell of blood and residual adrenaline. Raxus approached Amara, then roughly yet with a strange carefulness, he lifted the woman back onto the bed.
Raxus grabbed a medical kit. He tore the fabric on Amara's shoulder, exposing a fairly deep cut on her smooth white skin. Raxus's rough fingers touched the edge of the wound, making Amara flinch.
"Why did you do it?" Raxus whispered. His voice was now hoarse, far from the anger that had boiled over earlier. His nose moved closer to the crook of Amara's neck, inhaling the woman's pheromones which were now mixed with the sweet smell of blood.
"He is just a baby, Raxus. He is innocent of his father's cruelty," Amara hissed, even though her heart betrayed her by racing wildly as Raxus's face got closer.
Raxus did not answer. He began applying antiseptic liquid to Amara's wound. The touch of his fingers on the skin of Amara's back sent electric shocks from the fated mate bond that seemed to dance between them. The tension between the two shifted, from murderous intent to a suffocating passion.
Raxus pressed the wound a little harder, making Amara let out a short groan that sounded more like a moan. Raxus stopped, looking into Amara's eyes with a hungry gaze he could no longer hide.
"Do not think this heroic act of yours will change anything," Raxus whispered against Amara's lips. His warm breath hit Amara's skin, creating a tremor that spread down to her toes. "You are still my captive. You are still mine to destroy."
Raxus pulled Amara's chin, forcing the woman to look at the passion starting to burn behind his devilish eyes. His other hand crept slowly to Amara's slender waist, applying a pressure that made Amara's breath catch.
Under the dim room light and the intoxicating smell of blood, hatred and passion melted into one, creating a tension more dangerous than any intruder's dagger. Amara knew she should pull away, but her body leaned instead toward the man who had just almost choked her.
"Then destroy me now, Alpha," Amara challenged with a voice that almost disappeared.
Raxus let out a low growl, the sound of a pr
edator that had found its prey, as he lowered his head to claim the woman's lips.
