Lucas stepped forward just as the car sped toward them. Wrapping his arms around Chloe, he yanked her out of harm's way. Both of them tumbled heavily onto the steps.
Despite dodging just in time, Lucas's arm was still injured by the impact.
Screeech!
The tires screeched against the pavement, the harsh sound lingering in the air as the car veered into empty space.
Inside the car, Lisa slammed on the brakes so hard that her body jerked forward, her forehead slamming against the steering wheel. When she saw Lucas's limp arm, the realization hit her like a freight train. She'd caused a huge mess. After a brief moment of panic, she quickly turned the car around and sped off.
