Chapter Twenty Seven

1007 Words
Jordan's POV Stepping into the house felt like returning back into my cage. The door to my room clicking shut was the only sound that echoed loud in the house, everything else was figuratively as silent as a graveyard. Ever since the dispute between my mum and I, silence had grown between us and it somehow had affected the rest of my brothers too. No one was talking to anyone. The silence felt heavy and uncomfortable. Sitting on the edge of the bad, I crossed my legs and patiently waited for Elara to reach out to me. I had hinted at the mind-link stuff to her earlier in school today and my expectations were that she would reach out immediately after school but every moment passed by quietly, without a single word from her. Not even the sound of her breathing was heard. So I tried to reach her instant, my thoughts called out softly. "Elara..." Nothing. Another breath, another whisper yet no response. All of a sudden, the door to my room flew open wide but it was not Elara. Mum barged into the room, her arms folded and her back against the doorframe. "What do you think you are doing Jordan?" Her eyes were sharp and her shoulders squared. Rolling my eyes at her, I shot back. "What happened to knocking before barging into my room?" Mum scoffed and snapped, her tone laced tight with disappointment and though a hint of desperation too. "You think sitting here, hiding and calling that girl will change anything?" Hiding? Why did she think I was hiding? Hiding from what? "What do you mean by hiding? Why do you think I would hide?" My questions were laced with sincere curiosity. "From everything that is going on. Have you ever thought for once that you might just be using that girl as a cover, as way of not having to face reality." The accusation hit harder than any punch but the anger rising in me was not as a result of that, it was rage at the way she addressed Elara. "Elara is not just any girl! Why do you think I would be using her?" The words slipped out of my mouth. "She is not a purpose of distraction mum. You need to stop addressing her in that manner. She is special." Mum's eyes narrowed. "We are supposed to secure loyalty with the council, protect the pack and have the territory as ours officially. You think there is time to waste on some supposed special girl when the rest of us are fighting for survival?" Her words stung, not because they were false but because it hit me, it was a truth I could not deny. I had no plans on how to make the territory officially ours. Killing Adrian sounded like a good idea but it was not what dad would want me to do. There had to be other ways to secure the territories, I just was not thinking. The only thing on my mind was Elara. "I-I..." Trying to defend myself became a struggle. "Do you see it too? I know deep down in there, you know I am right Jordan. You know that we have bigger things to worry about and Elara is not even top of the list." Mum said. Before I could retort, the door slammed open behind her and Corvin staggered in. His face was swollen, lips split, bruises on his face, a look of anger and pain mixing in his gaze. "What the hell Corvin, what happened to your face?" Jerking off my bed, I rushed towards my brother with a look of concern etched on my face. Mum had a worried look plastered on her face but it seemed she had a clue on what was going on. She pulled him into her embrace and carefully rubbed his back. "Oh my sweet boy, what happened to you?" Corvin's gaze shifted to me accusingly and that was enough to cause me to raise my hands in mock surrender. "I did not do that. Why are you giving me that look?" Corvin pulled away from mum's embrace and rushed towards me. To my uttermost surprise, he grabbed me by the collar and spat out bitterly. "Jordan!" "Hey! Take your hands off me man!" Confusion engulfed me. How was any of this my fault? "Corvin! Stop! Let go off your brother." Thankfully, mum's voice was enough to calm whatever was going through Corvin's head. He let loose of my collar and took a few steps backward. "Because of you! Your head is in the cloud with her, thanks to you, I got this." Confusion and dread knotted tight. "I swear I do not f*****g understand you." This time, he turned to mum, his tone cold and harsh. "Your son gets to chase fantasies and i get to take punches for it." "Corvin, how does that have anything to do with Elara, what happened?" Mum threw questions at him. He flinched, then choked out a hollow laughter. "Who else do you think did it?" He did not let me answer. "Adrian and his boys. They did this to me! They said it was the punishment for having a brother like Jordan." His eyes glinted through tears and fury. Silence swallowed the room, Mum's face became pale whereas Corvin's chest heaved with sobs and suppressed anger. My heart began to pound, my head spinning with half-baked plans and unanswered questions. All I knew was that I wanted him to pay for it. Adrian was going to pay for his sins and this time, the goal was not to beat him up or tie him down. It was to kill him because then i would be killing two birds with one stone. "He is not done yet." Corvin spoke again. "What do you mean by that, Corvin?" Mum's tone was shaky. "They are coming back for her, for Elara." Just as Corvin's words landed, the doorbell rang intensively. Were they back for a round two already?
