Elara's POV
The golden markings glowed across my arms, dancing in strange patterns, symbols that were completely foreign to me.
Staring at them with wide eyes open in shock, a sharp breath escaped from my lips. "Jordan...." His name slipped from my mouth.
Jordan heard his name and as he slowly pulled away from me, the feeling of warmth slowly disappeared alongside the glowing markings.
It just vanished, almost like it had never even been there before.
"Are you okay?" Jordan raised a brow at in complete confusion. It seemed the shocked look on my face had become more evident.
"Did you see that? The glowing marks on me?" I whispered, pointing to my arms.
Jordan shook his head in disagreement and there was this feeling of fear that Jordan would assume I was perhaps just imagining things but his words took me off guard when he said. "I did not see the marks now but I have seen them before."
"On who?" My tone was laced curiosity.
"You Elara. It was just like this too. You were with me when it glowed the last time." He said.
"So do you think it means?" I held my arms out in front.
Jordan shook his head slowly, his face was unreadable. "I do not know what is, I have genuinely never seen anything like it before."
My voice slowly trembled as i unleashed the questions in my head. "So you do not know what it means?"
"No."
A pang of disappointment hit me and it was scary because this felt like I was being left in the dark yet again. It would have been better if he had said something ridiculous then there would be a trail to follow but this time, I was left in utter confusion.
Jordan's eyes roamed through the woods before offering to walk me home. "Look, I do not think Adrian is around here or else i would have sensed it. You should go back home since your mum is probably going to be home soon."
I did not argue, nodding my head in agreement, Jordan escorted me out.
The walk back home was in complete silence, Jordan did not ask anything else, he just kept stealing glances at me like he was waiting for me to hear Adrian's voice again.
Too bad, the power to trigger the mind-link stuff was not in my hands.
Fortunately when we arrived home, I was able to sneak back into the house since mum was back but engrossed sin a deep conversation with my father.
I slipped into my room, happy that I made it safely without getting caught.
At least so I thought but a sudden familiar masculine voice startled me from behind. "Where have you been?"
Turning around to face Lorien, he stepped into my room and crossed his arms as a smug grin grew on his face.
"I told mum you were in the bathroom taking a long shower. You are welcome." He added his last statement in sarcasm.
A breath of relief escaped my lips. "Phew, you are such a lifesaver."
Lorien grinned. "You owe me big time."
Shrugging and throwing myself on the bed recklessly. My eyes shut close for a brief moment. "Fine, you get to pick what we watch next movie night."
Lorien shook his head in disagreement. "How about you consider setting up a date for me and Maya?" He winked.
I shuddered just by the thought of that. "Bug off!" I tossed a pillow at his direction.
We laughed about it for a brief moment before a serious look grew on Lorien's face, that was one look that he barely ever wore.
"By the way, i think you should apologize to mum. She is just worried about you."
"You do not get it Lorien, it is not as simple as you think." I muttered.
"Just think about it. I think you are being too hard on her." He looked at me for a second before walking away.
After Lorien left, I had dinner in my room and it was time to sleep, there was this feeling to brace myself for Adrian's voice to crawl back into my head.
But it did not.
The silence gave me the most peaceful night sleep, one I have not had since my grandfather got missing.
The next morning, I got ready for school and just as i was about to step out of my room, mum barged in.
"Hey, it feels like i have not seen you for a long while." Mum said.
"Well, incase you have forgotten, you grounded me so i have been stuck in room all day." I retorted but then Lorien's words suddenly replayed in my head and that was when realization hit me. Maybe my words were a little harsh.
"Sorry." I said forcefully.
Mum did not seem to take offense in it, maybe she was already used to my rudeness. She cleared her throat and surprisingly, a big smile found its way on her face.
"I have good news."
"What? That Gabriel Cross is finally leaving town? Or he is resigning from our school?" My thoughts had formed into words and my mum was clearly disappointed by them because she frowned. "Why do you want Gabriel gone so bad? He is only concerned about you, I expected you to be grateful."
"Grateful? That man bugs me around!" I choked out a hysteric laughter.
"Anyways, good news is we might have a lead on your grandfather's case." She said.
I froze halfway into my sweater. "A lead?"
Mum nodded in agreement. I wanted to ask her what it was but there was this feeling of certainty that mum would not tell me. She probably saw it as an unhealthy obsession over my grandfather's case.
Although, the good part was that there were other ways to gather more information about this lead.
Maya's uncle worked at the station and since she was practically living with him because of her parent's messy divorce, she could help me get to him.
Hopefully, this so-called lead wasn’t who I feared it might be.
