Chapter Thirteen

1188 Words
Jordan's POV Avoiding her scent, keeping my eyes off her window, pretending I didn't feel this pull everytime she thought of me. It was torture. I had to remind myself , i was doing this for mum. If she knew how fast the bond was getting stronger, she'd make us pack up and leave town immediately. Although something about tonight felt different, I had this sudden feeling of danger knocking at Elara's door. I watched her step out of the house. The porch light shone above her head, revealing her outfit. She was dressed in a black hoodie and a pair of baggy jeans were clad to her legs. She paused for a second, glancing back and forth like she was expecting someone to call her back. No one did. Then she moved, her steps cautious. I found it suspicious. The clouds were already dark and gloomy, where could she possibly be headed to by this hour of the day? Her choice of outfit, the way her hands were stuffed into her jeans pocket and how her chin was tucked low made it seem like she was going for a heist. I knew I was not supposed to follow her but i wanted to, I just wanted to make sure she was not getting into danger. I pressed my palms against the windowpane, my eyes remained fixated on Elara as i tracked each step she took. My chest felt right, instincts already railing at me. "Jordan." A familiar voice hissed from behind. The sharp whisper behind me sent chills down my spine. I turned around to gaze at him, His brows were knit tightly together, his lips pressed into a thin line and he tilted his head slightly. The weight of his gaze made the air feel tense. "You and mum talked about this." He said. "I know Isaac but I just have to make sure she is safe." I said in a low tone, my voice tighter. Isaac didn't move, his frown deepened and his eyes narrowed in frustration. "You made a promise to mum to stay away from her or else we would have to move." "Look, I can not just watch her walk the streets alone by this time. It is dangerous, Adrian and his pack could be lurking in the shadows." I was hoping Isaac's expression would at least change a little but his face remained stale like it was carved in stone. "Or Adrian and his pack could be trying to use her to lure you out. Did you ever think about that?" Isaac folded his arms. He looked like he had more to say but I hastily cut him halfway his sentence. "Just turn a blind eye to this Isaac. Just this once. I promise not to make any interactions with her." My voice came out low, barely above a whisper. I slowly lifted the window frame and tapped my foot against the floorboard, patiently waiting for Isaac's approval. Isaac breathed out a heavy sigh and dragged both palms down his face "I hope you stick to your promise this time." I nodded my head tightly, then jumped through the window, slipping into the cold night. I trailed her from a distance, my steps were light and careful. I observed her body movements, her shoulders were tensed, her hands remained tucked into her pockets and her head bent low like was trying to disappear. All of a sudden, Elara stopped walking. She tilted her head and i could have sworn I heard her sniff the air. No- There was no way she could have done that, there was no way she could sensed a presence, my presence. Elara turned around hastily, her eyes locked into mine sharply. "How did you know i was following you?" I blurted out, i was dumbstruck by what had just happened. Only wolves could catch scent and Elara wasn't one. She cleared her throat and a deep frown grew on her face. "Why are you following me?" She snapped at me, totally ignoring my question. I slowly stepped out of the shadows. "It's dangerous to walk out here alone." Elara scoffed. "Did i ask for your protection?" Her tone was laced with a mix of confusion and anger. "Where are you going?" I asked, glancing around. I remembered my promise to Isaac, i planned to end the conversation immediately to avoid getting caught by Adrian. "Why does it matter?" Elara crossed her arms. "It does because Jordan happens to extraordinarily care about you a lot." Speak of the actual devil, a figure stepped out from behind a tree ahead of us, like a shadow moving from the darkness. It was Adrian surrounded by two other boys, both taller than him. His lips curved into a mischievous smirk as he spoke in a slow and deliberate tone. "You brought him along to our meeting Elara." I clenched my fist tight and gritted my teeth in anger at the realization that Elara was going to see Adrian. Why him? "At least now I know." Adrian shrugged, his eyes gleaming and his smirk grew wider. Elara casted a glance at me for a brief moment before shifting her gaze on Adrian. "Know what?" She furrowed her brows in confusion. "That you both are fated mates." My mother's warnings had come to bite me back in the ass, it felt like I had been punched in the guts. Adrian knew Elara was my mate and that only meant trouble. Silence crushed the air around us. I snuck a glance at Elara, she blinked slowly, the confusion on her face deepened. "Wh-at... what is he talking about?" She stuttered. I wanted to explain everything to her, i really wanted to but it was all complicated. I did not want a mere human like her getting too exposed to my world, especially now that Adrian had his eyes on her. Adrian leaned, his gaze locked on mine. "Oh poor Jordan, you tried to stay away but fate doesn't care about rules, does it?" I could barely control the shift rising under my skin, i growled lowly. "Leave." Adrian c****d his head. "I will but not without a promise." "I will destroy you and I will use her to do it." Adrian's smirk curled into something crueler and before i could blink, he rushed towards Elara. Luckily for me, my body moved fast before my mind caught up. I hastily wrapped my arms around her waist and pulled her into me just in time to spin her away from Adrian. Elara let out a loud gasp as we staggered backward. My arms subconsciously tightened, holding her closer than I had ever done before. Her chest was pressed against mine, I could hear her heartbeat rise and her hot breath tingled below my neck. Suddenly, it felt like the world froze for us. I saw a faint glow in her stormy grey eyes. What took me off guard was how the glow had transformed into golden markings beneath the skin of her collarbone spreading downwards to her entire body. She didn't notice. But I did.
