The Inner Circle

The morning sun barely pierced the heavy gray clouds surrounding the Northern Fortress, but my eyes were already wide open. I hadn't slept much. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Kael's disgusted face. I felt the phantom sting of freezing rain against my skin and remembered the cold stone beneath my knees when he had rejected me. But then, without warning, another scent would wrap around me. Dark vanilla. Ancient cedar. It was Orion's scent. And somehow, it grounded me in this terrifying new reality. I was no longer in the Blood Moon Pack. I was here. The Northern Fortress. The home of the Lycan King. And somehow... I was its Queen. A soft knock interrupted my racing thoughts. The heavy bedroom door opened, and Cora stepped inside with two young Omegas carrying an assortment of clothes. Their heads remained respectfully bowed as they entered. But it wasn't fear. It was reverence. That small difference struck me harder than I expected. In the Blood Moon Pack, Omegas lowered their heads because they were afraid of being punished. Here, they lowered theirs because they respected me. It was a strange feeling. One I wasn't sure I deserved yet. "Good morning, my Queen," Cora said with a warm smile. "King Orion is waiting. It is time to meet the generals." My stomach twisted instantly. "The generals?" Cora's smile widened. "Yes." I swallowed hard. I wasn't ready. I didn't know how to be a Queen. I barely knew how to stand without expecting someone to hit me. Still, I allowed Cora to help me dress. She didn't put me in some fragile, frilly gown. Instead, she handed me tailored black leather pants, a dark fitted tunic, and a heavy fur-lined cloak. The cloak smelled faintly of Orion. My wolf practically purred. When I finally stood before the full-length mirror, I barely recognized the woman staring back at me. My posture was straighter. My skin looked healthier. The dark circles beneath my eyes had disappeared, replaced by an almost ethereal glow. For the first time in my life, I didn't look like an abused Omega. I looked... dangerous. The heavy bedroom door opened. Orion stepped inside. His massive presence immediately filled the room. He was dressed in dark combat gear, the fitted fabric emphasizing his broad shoulders and powerful frame. His silver eyes swept over me. Then stopped. Something changed in his expression. "You look beautiful," he murmured. His deep voice sent a shiver through me. Then his eyes narrowed. "But you're trembling." I looked down at my hands. "I'm terrified." The confession escaped before I could stop it. "What if they hate me? What if they think I'm just a weak Omega?" I took a shaky breath. "I don't know how to be a Lycan Queen." Orion crossed the room. He stopped directly in front of me. His warmth surrounded me as he gently lifted my chin. "They will not hate you." His silver eyes held mine. "You are my fated mate." His thumb brushed lightly against my jaw. "Walk with your head high, Elara." His voice became softer. "Let your wolf show them exactly who you are." Something inside my chest stirred. My White Wolf. Powerful. Ancient. Awake. I nodded. Then we left. Walking through the corridors of the Northern Fortress felt surreal. Massive Lycan warriors lined the stone hallways. Men and women alike stood aside as Orion and I approached. Every single one stopped what they were doing. Then they bowed. Not just to him. To me. My heart stumbled. I wasn't used to respect. I wasn't used to being seen. And I certainly wasn't used to being honored. We eventually reached a pair of enormous iron doors. Two heavily armed guards pulled them open. Beyond them was a grand circular war room. A massive stone table dominated the center, surrounded by five intimidating figures. Orion's inner circle. The moment we entered, conversation died. The generals immediately rose and bowed to Orion. Then they straightened. Five pairs of intense eyes turned toward me. They studied everything. My appearance. My scent. My posture. My strength. I could feel them silently judging whether I was worthy of the title Queen. Orion stepped forward. His voice thundered through the chamber. "Generals." Everyone became still. "This is Elara." His silver eyes briefly met mine. "Your Queen." Silence. Heavy. Suffocating. Then one of the generals stepped forward. He was enormous, with a jagged scar running across his face and one eye covered by an old injury. General Kaelen. His remaining eye examined me with open skepticism. "My King," he said carefully, "we rejoice that you have finally found your mate." His gaze moved over me. "But she smells faintly of a southern pack." His expression hardened. "She smells almost human." A few of the generals exchanged glances. Kaelen continued. "Can a fragile Omega truly lead the Lycan army?" The air changed. Orion's silver eyes flashed. Murderous rage erupted from his aura. He took one threatening step forward. But before he could speak, something inside me snapped. Not my human mind. My White Wolf. I stepped in front of Orion. My boots struck the stone floor. I didn't lower my head. I didn't hide behind him. I looked directly into Kaelen's eye. And something ancient awakened inside my chest. A blinding wave of power exploded outward. My vision flashed white. The air shook. My eyes burned with brilliant white light. The pressure in the room changed violently, spreading from my body like a physical shockwave. Kaelen gasped. He stumbled backward as though an invisible force had struck him. The other four generals immediately dropped to one knee. Their wolves were overwhelmed. Not by an Alpha. Not even by a King. By something older. Something far more powerful. My Royal White Wolf. "I am not a fragile Omega." My voice sounded eerily calm. But there was something else beneath it. Another voice. A deeper, ancient echo that seemed to vibrate through the stone walls. "Never question my strength again, General." Silence consumed the room. The generals remained on their knees. Even Kaelen looked shaken. Slowly, I pulled my aura back. My heart was pounding wildly. My hands trembled. But I remained standing. Orion stared at me. He wasn't angry. He wasn't surprised. He looked... Proud. A wicked smirk slowly appeared on his handsome face. "As I said," he murmured into the silence. "Your Queen." The generals bowed their heads lower. I had claimed my place. But before I could even breathe a sigh of relief— BOOM! The massive iron doors crashed open. A Lycan border guard stumbled into the war room. His armor was covered in fresh blood. He dropped to one knee, breathing heavily. "Forgive the intrusion, my King!" Orion's expression instantly hardened. "What happened?" The guard swallowed. "We have a massive breach at the southern border." He looked terrified. "Alpha Marcus and the newly appointed Alpha Kael of the Blood Moon Pack have brought an entire army to our gates." My blood ran cold. Kael. My heart seemed to stop. Why was he here? "What do they want?" Orion growled. His voice carried a lethal promise. The guard hesitated. Then his eyes shifted toward me. "Alpha Kael is furious, Sire." My stomach dropped. "He claims someone hiding inside this fortress stole his pack's rightful property." His voice shook. "He is demanding the immediate surrender of his runaway Omega..." He looked directly at me. "...Elara." The room went deathly silent. "Or he will declare full-scale war." I couldn't breathe. Kael hadn't come to apologize. He hadn't come because he regretted rejecting me. He had come to drag me back to hell. And this time... He had brought an army.
