The Impending Storm

1095 Words
The war-room fell silent. Elara stared at the blood-covered guard, barely breathing as his words echoed through the chamber. “Alpha Marcus and Alpha Kael have brought an army to the southern border. They demand the return of the runaway Omega… Elara.” Her heart stopped. Kael. He wasn't here to apologize. He wasn't here because he regretted rejecting her. He had come because his pride couldn't accept that the girl he had thrown away was still alive. For eighteen years, Elara had been taught that she was weak. Worthless. A burden. And now, after finally escaping, Kael had crossed an empire's borders to drag her back. Her fingers began to tremble. The room blurred. She could almost feel the freezing snow of Dark Woods beneath her bare feet again. Hear the gates slamming shut behind her. Feel the pain of Kael's rejection tearing through her chest. “Elara.” Orion's voice cut through the memories. He was beside her instantly, his hands settling firmly on her shoulders. “Look at me.” She forced herself to meet his silver eyes. The fear didn't disappear, but something inside her steadied. Orion turned toward the guard. “What exactly did Kael say?” The guard swallowed. “He claims that Queen Elara belongs to the Blood Moon Pack under ancient pack law. He says she is their rightful property and refuses to leave without her.” For several seconds, Orion said nothing. Then he smiled. It wasn't a kind smile. It was the smile of a predator that had just been given permission to hunt. “General Kaelen.” The scarred general stepped forward immediately. “Your Majesty.” “Sound the war horns.” Kaelen's eyes sharpened. “Deploy the Vanguard Battalion to the southern walls. Archers on every parapet. Double the guards at every gate. I want every Blood Moon wolf accounted for before they take another step.” His voice dropped into something terrifying. “And show these southern fools what a real army looks like.” The war horns erupted. Their deep, thunderous sound shook the fortress. Warriors poured through the corridors. Armor clashed. Weapons were lifted. Orders echoed through the stone halls. The Northern Fortress had awakened. Orion turned back to Elara. “You don't have to be afraid.” “I am,” she whispered. He stepped closer. “You are my fated mate. You are the Royal White Wolf. You are the undisputed Queen of this empire.” His thumb brushed gently across her cheek. “Kael has no power over you.” Elara swallowed. “He says ancient law gives him a right to me.” “Ancient laws do not apply to royalty.” Orion's silver eyes hardened. “And if he still thinks he can take you from me, I'll teach him exactly how wrong he is.” A dangerous silence followed. Then Orion said quietly, “I'll rip his head from his shoulders before I let him touch you.” Something inside Elara changed. Her White Wolf stirred. Not with fear. With anger. She caught Orion's forearm before he could turn away. “Don't.” He looked down at her hand. “Don't kill him yet.” One brow lifted. “You're asking me to spare him?” “No.” Her eyes hardened. “I want to see his face first.” A slow smile appeared on her lips. “I want to stand on those walls wearing silk and silver, beside you, and make him realize exactly who he rejected.” Orion's smile widened. “And then?” Elara's wolf growled softly inside her. “Then I want to completely break him.” For a moment, Orion simply stared at her. Then he offered his hand. “I think I'm going to enjoy watching that.” Elara placed her hand in his. Together, they walked toward the southern parapets. The fortress seemed to move around them. Every warrior they passed stopped and bowed. Not to Orion alone. To both of them. Queen and King. Elara kept her head high. For the first time in her life, she didn't feel like she had to make herself smaller. The massive iron doors leading to the southern wall opened. Cold wind struck her face. Below them, an army stretched across the snow. Hundreds of Blood Moon wolves stood in formation, their breath rising like smoke in the freezing air. At the front stood Kael. He was in human form, dressed in dark battle clothing, his expression arrogant as he stared up at the fortress. Selene stood beside him. Even from this distance, Elara could see the smug satisfaction on her face. They had come expecting to find a frightened Omega hiding behind someone else's power. They were not prepared for what they saw. Kael's eyes lifted. Then froze. His gaze locked onto Elara. She stood beside Orion in royal black and silver, wrapped in a heavy fur-lined cloak, her posture straight and her expression calm. The girl he had once forced to her knees was standing above him. Not as an Omega. Not as a servant. As a Queen. Kael's confidence faltered. For the first time, Elara saw something she had never seen in his eyes before. Fear. His gaze shifted toward Orion. The massive Lycan King stood beside her, silver eyes glowing like cold moonlight. Orion's hand remained firmly intertwined with Elara's. A silent declaration. Mine. Kael's jaw tightened. “Elara!” he shouted across the snowy battlefield. “Come down here!” The old command in his voice was familiar. Once, it would have made her obey. Now, it barely reached her. Elara stepped closer to the edge of the wall. She looked down at the man who had broken her heart. The man who had called her weak. The man who had thrown her into the Dark Woods. And she smiled. Not nervously. Not sadly. Coldly. Kael stared at her as if he were seeing a ghost. He had come to retrieve the powerless Omega he believed belonged to him. Instead, he had found the woman who now stood beside the most terrifying King in the Lycan world. They thought they had cornered a frightened, powerless girl. He had no idea what stood behind those walls. He had no idea what had awakened in the Dark Woods. And most importantly... He had no idea that the Omega he had thrown away was no longer afraid of him. The storm had arrived. And this time— I was standing at the center of it.
