Anna walked straight towards the man, her heart pounding in her chest. As she approached, he nodded slightly, his eyes locked onto hers. "Who are you?" Anna demanded, trying to keep her voice steady. The man hesitated for a moment before responding. "My name is Alex. I was a friend of your father's. We worked together on a project... Project X." Anna's eyes narrowed. "What's Project X?" Alex glanced around nervously before leaning in closer. "Your father was investigating some case, Anna. He had a reputation for being fearless and relentless in his pursuit of the truth. We were hired to uncover some...irregularities at one of the big companies in Chicago." Anna's mind was racing. What kind of irregularities? And what did this have to do with her father's death? Alex continued, his voice low and serious. "Your father had gotten some information that could bring the company down. He called me the night before...he was excited. We were supposed to meet the next day to go over the evidence, but...he didn't make it." Anna felt a surge of anger and determination. She was going to find out what happened to her father, and she was going to make sure that justice was served. "What company was it?" Anna asked, her eyes locked onto Alex's. Alex's eyes scanned around the cemetery, his voice barely above a whisper. "I'm not going to tell you the name of the company, Anna. It's not safe. If they find out that we're investigating them...our lives could be in danger." Anna's eyes widened as she realized the gravity of the situation. "You're the one who called us earlier, aren't you?" she asked, her voice firm. Alex nodded. "Yes, I'm the one who warned you. I knew your father was getting close to the truth, and I knew that his life was in danger." Anna's mind was racing with questions and fears. She knew she had to tell her mother about the mysterious note and what Alex had just told her. As soon as they got home, Anna found her mother sitting on her bed and she seemed to be in deep thought, her eyes red from crying. Anna knocked and entered, she took a deep breath before telling her mother everything - the note, Alex's warning, and the company that her father had been investigating. Her mother's expression changed from sadness to fear. "Anna, leave it alone," she begged. "I don't want to lose you too. Your father was a brave man, but he was also reckless. I don't want you to follow in his footsteps." Anna felt a surge of frustration. She knew that her mother was scared, but she also knew that she couldn't just leave things alone. She had to know the truth about her father's death, no matter the cost. "I have to do this, Mum," Anna said, her voice firm. "I have to know what happened to Dad." Her mother's eyes filled with tears. "Please, Anna. Just leave it alone." A few days later, there was a knock on the door. Anna went to check who it was, and she was shocked to see Alex again at their doorstep. "Alex, what are you doing here?" Anna's mother asked as she approached the door. Alex's expression was sombre. "I wanted to offer my condolences in person," he said. "And I also wanted to talk to you about Anna.” Anna excused herself and went upstairs to her bedroom. Alex sat down with Helena, in the living room. "Helena, I know Anna is curious about her father's death, and I'm worried that she might start investigating on her own and put herself in danger" Helena's eyes filled with concern. "That's exactly what I talked to her about," she said. "I told her to leave it alone, but I'm not sure she'll listen." Alex nodded understandingly. "I know Anna's determined, but I think it's best if she just lets it go. It's not safe for her to be digging into this." Alex took a deep breath before continuing. "I worked with Hudson on Project X for three years. We were getting close to uncovering some big secrets, and I'm afraid that's what got him killed. If Anna starts asking questions, she might attract the wrong kind of attention." Helena nodded in agreement. "I know. That's why I'm begging her to leave it alone. She has her whole life ahead of her, and I don't want anything to happen to her." Anna walked into the room, overhearing the end of the conversation. She looked at her mother and Alex, knowing that they were both worried about her. Anna's mother took her hand, her eyes pleading. "Anna, you're young. You have your whole life ahead of you. Please, focus on our family and how we're going to get through this tough time. Your father would want us to be strong and take care of each other." Anna nodded, feeling a pang of guilt. She knew her mother was right. She did have her whole life ahead of her, and she needed to focus on her family's well-being. "I'll leave it alone, Mum," Anna said, trying to reassure her. "I promise." Helena's face lit up with relief. "Thank you, Anna. That means a lot to me." But as she looked away, Anna's mind began to wander. She knew that she couldn't just let things go. She had to know the truth about her father's death, and she was determined to find out. One day, she would go to Chicago and uncover the secrets that had led to her father's tragic demise. She would find out who was responsible and make sure they paid for their crimes. The thought sent a surge of determination through Anna's veins. She would wait, she would plan, and she would act. The truth would come out, and justice would be served. For now, Anna would pretend to focus on her family and their well-being. But in her heart, she knew that she would never give up on finding the truth….. ********** Ten years later, Anna's life has taken a drastic change since her father's passing and the once stable family has faced challenges. Two years ago, her mother, Helena was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. They were forced to sell their childhood home and grocery store to settle the medical bills that had piled up. Despite her illness, Helena refused to give up. She started sewing sweaters and scarves and selling them online through a small business she'd built. Though it wasn't easy, every stitch represented hope. Anna, now 25, has struggled to see herself through college; she has worked odd jobs and worked tirelessly, caring for her mother and sister while pursuing her dreams. Despite the struggles, Anna's determination to find out what happened to her father never wavered. She has grown into a strong and resourceful young woman, driven by a fierce loyalty to her family and a desire for justice. She now works at Oakdale Diner, trying to save for her mother's treatment. Melissa, now 19, helps with online sales and caregiving for their mother. Helena's cancer is in remission, but treatment continues. Their small apartment is filled with sweaters, fabric, and determination. Anna feels a sense of restlessness. She knows it's time to take action, to start digging into the past and uncovering the secrets that have been hidden for so long. With a newfound sense of purpose, Anna begins to make plans. She would start by going to Chicago, where the company that her Dad was investigating is. She would talk to people, ask questions, and see if she could uncover any leads. It won't be easy, Anna knows. But she's ready to face whatever lay ahead, to fight for the truth and justice. One day, Anna came back from work exhausted after another long day at Oakdale Diner. She pushed through the front door, kicked off her shoes and settled onto the couch. She picked up her phone and dialed Emily's number, needing to vent to her best friend about her long day. Emily answered on the first ring, and Anna launched into a detailed account of her day. Emily listened patiently, offering words of encouragement and support. When Anna finally ran out of steam, Emily said, "You know, Anna, I've been thinking. You're done with college now, and you're stuck in a dead-end job at the diner. Why don't you come to Chicago and try to get a job here? It'll be a fresh start for you." Anna's heart skipped a beat at the suggestion. She had always been drawn to the idea of living in Chicago, and the thought of starting fresh was tempting. But then she thought about her mother and sister, and her hesitation returned. "I don't want to leave Mum and Mellisa. Mum's still not doing well, and Melissa is still in school", Anna said slowly. Emily's voice was understanding. "I know it's hard, Anna. But we shall make it work, you can always visit them regularly and they can visit you too. And think about it, if you come to Chicago, you can start investigating your father's death. You've always wanted to know the truth." Anna's thoughts flashed back to their late-night conversations. "Yeah... but Mom's illness... I couldn't leave." "I know," Emily said. "But now's your chance. You've finished college, and your Mum's recovering. It's time to take control of your life." Anna hesitated, feeling conflicted. “I don't know, Emily, what if something happens to Mum or Melissa needs me? I'll be hours away." "Anna, your mum is getting better, and Melissa's growing up. They'll be fine. You can find a great job here and take care of them. Think about your future. You deserve this chance." Anna's resolve strengthened. Emily was right; this was her chance. "You're right," Anna said finally. "I'm coming to Chicago to start afresh.” "Yes! I'll start looking for job openings. You pack your bags!" Emily exclaimed. As they discussed details, Anna's excitement grew. She began to feel like the possibility of moving to Chicago was becoming more real. She could do this. She could start a new life in Chicago, pursue a new career, and get closer to uncovering the truth about her father's death. The thought sent a shiver of excitement down Anna's spine. She had always felt stuck in her small town, Homewood. But now, she felt like she had a chance to break free, to start fresh, and to pursue her dreams. As Anna prepares to leave for Chicago, little does she know that nothing will go according to plan….
