Chapter Two: A Dangerous Introduction

The ballroom shimmered with gold and light. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling, casting warm reflections on the marble floor. Elegant people laughed, danced, and smiled as if nothing bad could ever happen in their world. Ava Montgomery stood near the edge of the room. Her red gown hugged her perfectly. Her hair fell in soft curls over her shoulder. Every eye that turned toward her saw perfection. Only she knew how false that image was. She lifted her glass of champagne but did not drink. She was not here for fun. She was here to face the man she had already met in the shadows. Leo Kane entered through the main doors. He wore a black suit and a calm expression. He looked powerful and in control. But when his eyes found her across the room, something changed. For a moment, the noise of the crowd faded. Their eyes met, and Ava felt a strange pull. It was not fear. It was not anger. It was something she did not want to name. He smiled slightly, then began walking toward her. Her fingers tightened around her glass. She whispered to herself, “Stay calm.” “Miss Montgomery.” His voice was smooth, quiet, and confident. Ava turned with a polite smile. “Mr. Kane.” He bowed his head a little. “It is nice to finally meet you. I hear your family speaks highly of mine.” “Do they?” she said lightly. “That must be rare.” He laughed softly. “You do not seem like the polite type.” “Maybe I am not,” she said, still smiling. He studied her face for a moment. “You look familiar,” he said quietly. Her heart skipped. “Do I?” “Yes. Have we met before?” Ava kept her eyes steady. “I would remember if we had.” Leo nodded slowly, though something in his eyes said he did not believe her. Her mother appeared beside her with a bright smile. “Mr. Kane, what a surprise. I see you have met my daughter.” Leo shook her hand politely. “Yes, Mrs. Montgomery. Your daughter is quite… remarkable.” “Thank you,” her mother said proudly. “She is full of surprises,” her father added from behind them. Ava glanced at him. “You have no idea,” she said softly. Her father chuckled. “What was that, dear?” “Nothing,” Ava replied, smiling again. As the music began to play, Leo offered his hand. “May I have this dance?” Ava hesitated, then placed her hand in his. “Of course.” They moved to the center of the ballroom. The crowd around them blurred into soft colors and music. Leo’s hand rested lightly on her waist, and their steps fell in rhythm. “You dance well,” he said. “So do you,” she answered. “You are not nervous?” “Should I be?” “Only if you have something to hide.” Her eyes lifted to his. “Everyone here has something to hide.” He smiled. “Including you?” “Especially me.” Their dance ended with a quiet applause. Ava stepped back, giving him a polite nod. “It was nice meeting you again, Mr. Kane.” “Again?” he asked with a hint of amusement. She froze for half a second, realizing her mistake. He caught it. “Slip of the tongue,” she said quickly. “Maybe,” he said softly. “Or maybe not.” Before she could answer, someone called her name. A reporter wanted a photo. She turned away for a moment, forcing her heartbeat to slow. When she looked back, Leo was gone. Later that night, Ava stood on the balcony, breathing in the cool air. The city lights glimmered far below. Her reflection in the glass looked calm, but her thoughts were racing. Nina’s voice came through her small earpiece. “So, how did the perfect evening go?” “Complicated,” Ava said quietly. “Did he recognize you?” “I am not sure.” “You need to be careful. If he connects you to The Night Fox, everything falls apart.” “I know,” Ava whispered. “But he is not what I expected.” “Oh no,” Nina groaned. “Do not tell me you like him.” Ava laughed softly. “I do not. He is dangerous.” “Good. Keep it that way,” Nina said. “Now get home. You have another job tomorrow.” Ava ended the call and looked down at the crowd inside the ballroom. She saw her father shaking hands with Leo Kane. They looked friendly. Too friendly. Something about it made her uneasy. She whispered to herself, “What are you planning, Father?” The next morning, the newspaper headline caught her attention. Montgomery Industries Partners with Kane Enterprises for New Project Ava stared at the words. This could not be real. Her father was joining forces with the same man she had stolen from. She closed the paper quickly as her mother walked in. “Exciting news, isn’t it?” her mother said cheerfully. “Your father and Mr. Kane make a great team.” Ava forced a smile. “Yes, wonderful.” Inside, her thoughts spun fast. If their companies were merging, that meant she would be seeing Leo Kane much more often. It also meant her secret missions just became a lot more dangerous. That evening, Ava entered her father’s study. He was on the phone, giving orders. His voice was cold and steady. When he noticed her, he ended the call. “Ava, you look upset. Is something wrong?” “I saw the news,” she said. “You are working with Leo Kane?” “Yes. He is talented, smart, and useful.” “Do you trust him?” Her father smiled. “Trust is not necessary. Control is.” His words made her stomach twist. She left the room without another word. In her own room, she took off her necklace and stared at her reflection in the mirror. The mask lay hidden in her drawer, waiting. The night was calling again. She whispered to herself, “If Leo Kane wants to play this game, then I will play it better.” Far across the city, Leo sat in his office, reading the same newspaper headline. He smiled faintly. “So, we meet again, Miss Montgomery,” he said softly. “And this time, I will find out who you really are.”
