CHAPTER 17. RESULTS

945 Words
The snow was still falling when Elena finally fell asleep. Not a heavy storm. Just enough to turn the campus white. Enough to make everything look clean. Fresh. Like the world had decided to start over. Unfortunately, Elena's brain had no interest in starting over. It wanted answers. And the email announcing the competition results wasn't scheduled until noon. Which meant she had six hours to suffer. At 6:12 AM, Maya found her sitting cross-legged on the floor, wrapped in a blanket, staring at her laptop. "You know staring at your inbox doesn't make emails arrive faster." Elena didn't look away. "I know." "You've refreshed that page twelve times." "Twenty-three." Maya blinked. "That's worse." By 8 AM the entire dorm knew results were coming. Priya arrived carrying three muffins. Jamal appeared five minutes later with coffee. Nobody admitted they were worried. Everyone obviously was. "You won." Jamal said it with absolute confidence. Elena groaned. "You don't know that." "I do." "No." "I absolutely do." Priya nodded. "Honestly, your biggest competition was that Ethan guy." "The human TED Talk." "Exactly." Elena rolled her eyes. Yet Ethan's name lingered. Not because she was interested. Because he was genuinely brilliant. And she knew brilliance when she saw it. If she lost to him... She couldn't even be angry. At 11:57 AM her phone buzzed. Every conversation stopped. Every eye turned toward her. "Open it." Maya pointed dramatically. "Now." Elena swallowed. Clicked. Opened. Read. Then froze. "What?" "What happened?" "Did you win?" Elena looked up slowly. Speechless. "Elena." Maya grabbed her shoulders. "What does it say?" Finally Elena found her voice. "First place." The room exploded. Priya screamed. Jamal knocked over his coffee. Maya actually jumped onto the couch. Someone in the hallway yelled because they'd heard the celebration through the door. "You won!" Elena laughed. Then unexpectedly... Started crying. Not dramatic tears. Not sobbing. Just relief. Months of work. Months of doubt. Months of wondering if she was good enough. Suddenly released. Maya wrapped her in a hug. "See?" Elena laughed through tears. "Shut up." "I was right." "You always say you're right." "Because I usually am." The celebration lasted all afternoon. Professors emailed congratulations. Students stopped her between classes. Even Professor Okoro sent a message. Congratulations. Do not let it go to your head. You still overuse notation. Elena stared at the email. Then laughed. Classic Okoro. By evening the department website had posted the official announcement. Photos. Awards. Recognition. Future opportunities. The whole thing felt unreal. Then another email arrived. Subject: Graduate Fellowship Invitation Her stomach flipped. The fellowship was prestigious. Extremely prestigious. The kind students spent years chasing. The kind that opened doors. The kind Adrian had received when he was her age. For a second she just stared. Then quickly closed the email. One thing at a time. One thing at a time. That night Caleb took her to dinner. Nothing fancy. A small restaurant near the river. Warm lights. Good food. Quiet atmosphere. When they sat down he raised a glass. "To Elena Rivera." She groaned. "No speeches." "I'm giving a speech." "No." "Absolutely." She buried her face in her hands. Caleb grinned. "To the smartest woman I know." Heat rushed into her cheeks. "Caleb—" "Who somehow keeps acting surprised every time she succeeds." She laughed. "And who won because she earned it." Something in his voice made her pause. Because he meant it. Every word. No jealousy. No competition. No insecurity. Just pride. For her. The realization settled somewhere deep. Dangerously deep. The rest of dinner passed easily. Laughter. Stories. Arguments about terrible movies. Normal things. Simple things. Things Elena hadn't realized she'd missed. When they finally stepped outside, snow still drifted through the air. Soft. Silent. Beautiful. The city glowed under streetlights. For a moment neither moved. Then Caleb spoke. "You know." "What?" "You're going to change the world someday." Elena snorted. "That's dramatic." "I'm serious." He looked at her. Really looked at her. "Most people work hard." She listened. "Most people are smart." The snow landed on his shoulders. "Very few are both." Elena felt something tighten unexpectedly in her chest. Because Adrian had once said something similar. But it felt different coming from Caleb. Adrian admired her potential. Caleb admired her. The distinction frightened her. Before she could answer, her phone buzzed. Unknown number. Her stomach dropped instantly. Unknown numbers never brought good news. Slowly she opened it. One message. Congratulations on the competition. Berlin misses you. The blood drained from her face. No signature. No explanation. Nothing. Just those four words. Berlin misses you. Caleb noticed immediately. "What happened?" Elena couldn't answer. Because she already knew. There was only one person in Berlin who would send that message. Adrian. Except... Something felt wrong. Very wrong. Adrian wouldn't send that. Not after their last conversation. Not after giving her closure. Not after letting her go. Her phone buzzed again. Second message. This one included a photograph. Elena opened it. And stopped breathing. It was Adrian. Standing outside a building in Berlin. The image looked recent. Very recent. But that wasn't what made her heart stop. Someone had circled him in red. And written three words underneath. HE'S COMING HOME. Snow continued falling around them. Caleb's voice sounded distant. "Elena?" She stared at the screen. A terrible feeling settling into her stomach. Because deep down... She knew. When Adrian Cole returned— Everything was going to change. End of Chapter 17 Chapter 18 will begin the "Return Arc," where Adrian's unexpected return collides with Elena's growing success, Ethan becomes a larger presence, and Caleb starts uncovering secrets that connect his family to the university in ways nobody expected.
