Chapter 11 Cursed The long-dreamed of peace that the people of Elis had wished for finally arrived, and never was it more evident than on the day that their princess, Hippodameia, was wed to Pelops. How could they not see that this was a blessed time? For at that midsummer, when the chariot of the sun rode high and bright in the heavens, when the evening air was fragrant with jasmine and orange, the Gods walked upon the earth, their all-seeing eyes like stars among them. The Olympians had come to witness the wedding in the place where they had once battled Titans, and where they too had raced and battled among each other in friendly competition. It was a place of opposites, that plain beside the river Alfeios. The people had gathered about the field to watch as Pelops and Hippodameia
