Chapter One - Planning A Birthday

3177 Words
I ran upstairs. My house had two stories, a basement, outside pavilion, and three storage sheds. It was a nice house with lots of room, and we lived in a big fancy neighborhood. I was the daughter of the founders and CEOs of Zectroics. A multi millionaire dollar company who manufactures computers, phones, headphones, bluetooth earbuds, and more. I was going to take it over when I was older, that was my one and only dream.  I climbed up the ladders of my bed and grabbed my diary from under my pillow. I tossed it down on the floor. In seven days I was turning sixteen years old, it was going to be a huge Sweet 16. I got back to the ground and picked up my book. While walking through the house I flipped through my pages. Finding my chapter of Sweet 16 wishes and decoration plans. I had everything planned out, with the help of my mother, and best friends.  I walked down the stairs, my heels knocking on every step. "Millicent, breakfast is done!" I smiled at the sound of my mothers voice. I quickly walked over, she was already at the table. Dressed in her nice black and purple suit, with her black hair tied in a french braid. "Good morning mother. I found all of my plans for the party. This evening we can go over it." My father served us both before taking his seat.  "That would be lovely dear, if I didn't have to go into work. Your father and I will be extremely busy this next week. I'm sure your friends will help." She said. I forced a smile, I was hurt. We had been talking about this since I was ten.  "Of course. It's okay if I go and buy all of this. Hollance can drive me in his truck." I said. "Of course, we all like Hollance." I smiled and nodded.  My father took a drink of his wine. Wine in the morning? "Will Hollance be at the party? I'd love to talk to him about joining the company. He's good with numbers." After swallowing I spoke, "He'll be late, but he'll show. His mother hasn't been feeling well. That same day, she has surgery." I frowned.  "Tell him we wish his mother luck. She is a great woman." My mother said. We all continued eating in silence.  My parents left when they finished. Our housekeeper cleaned the table and plates. I opened my diary and pulled out my phone. The butterfly background lit up. It was themed pink, with crowns and butterflies. I called my best friend Evanessa. She was the same age as me, only three months younger.  I put her on speaker and grabbed my pink laptop from my backpack. "Hey Milli!" She exclaimed. "Okay, so mom can't help plan. I'll send you photos, help me make decisions." I said and took a few photos. "Seriously? Your mom is the best party planner. Like can't just take a few hours off?" I set my phone down and opened my laptop.  "No, it's a big shipment, my parents want to be there in case something happens. So which color scheme?" I asked and opened up some party planning sites. "Shades of pink and a pearl white. Those always look good on you. Are we going to get a dress?" I licked my lips.  "Yes, but not us. Hollance and I, I'll need his truck to get all of the decorations." I said, she giggled. "Sure, if that's what you think will just happen." I smiled. "He isn't like that, he loves talking, not hooking up." I said. "Uh huh. Sure." I started making a list.  "Look I need to call you later, I have to call up Hollance." I hung up before she said something annoying. I called up Hollance, putting him on speaker too. "Hey baby, whats up?" I couldn't help but smile hearing his cowboy voice. "I need your truck. You'll be my escort around the city so I can pick up all of the supplies." I said. "Okay, how long will that take, I can always stay over if you need help." He said. "A few hours at least, we could have lunch together." I added more to the list.  "That would be nice, I haven't seen you in a few days." He said. "So come pick me up. I'll be waiting outside." I almost hung up. "See you a few baby." He said. I hung up smiling. I really liked Hollance, my friends were ridiculous. He loved me for me, not what I looked like.  I went to the bathroom. My hair needed to be combed again, and I needed some makeup. I applied everything I needed, combed my hair back into a high ponytail, and grabbed my purse. My purse was expensive, my parents spoiled me every year with the newest and finest fashion. I loved it all.  As I waited for Hollance I sat on the patio swing bench thinking. A few neighbors walked by with their dogs or kids, in all honesty, I was lonely. Nothing happened in my life, my friends always had things to do, my parents were barely home, and I had no siblings.   Hollance pulled into the driveway with his truck. "Come on baby, let's go!" I smiled. I stood up as the mailman came with a package. "Hi Mr. Airest, is this for my parents?" I asked, looking at the package. He looked at Hollance, then me. "Yes, how did you know." He asked and smiled. He walked up to me. "I haven't ordered anything. You can leave it here, I have to go." I smiled at him. He nodded. "You know Airest, I'm having a sweet sixteen, you should come." I said. "No, I have work to do." He said and put the package on the doorstep. "Damn. If you have time, show up. There will be amazing food." I touched his arm as I walked past. He looked at me.  I climbed into Hollance's truck. Mr. Airest walked onto the sidewalk still watching me. I waved to him goodbye as Hollance drove. "You know I don't like him." Hollance said. "Why not?" I asked. "He creeps me out, stares at you way too much." I chuckled. "You're just jealous, he sees me everyday." I teased.  Driving out of the neighborhood took about twenty minutes. I reached for Hollance's phone, "What are you doing?" He asked. I pulled my hand away, shocked. "I was gonna connect it. Bluetooth, so we could listen to music. Sorry." I looked at him. "It's not a problem. Go ahead, code is four, two, eight, six." I grabbed his phone. We were always really close, he always let me use his phone, then again we never hid anything from each other. "So how's you mom?" I typed in his code.  "Not any better. Sue and Gabriel are coming out, in case something happens." Those were his older siblings, twenty and twenty-four. "I'm sure she'll be fine. The surgery couldn't be that bad." I said. "Hopefully, but what if…" He shook his head. "So what store are we going to?" He always changed the subject if he didn't like it. "Ten in total. Lackman's Tables and Chairs. Festive Foods. Hellon boutique. Cakes, Cupcakes, and Food Amaze. The Main Stree…" He put his hand up. "I get it, just put them in." He said. I chuckled and opened Google Maps. Hollance was a big sports fan, something we didn't have in common.  His phone was themed with all kinds of sports items. Footballs, bats, soccer nets, and pucks. I turned the music on and put his phone down. I stared out the window listening to the music and humming.  "So… am I invited? I mean I would expect to be going, afterall we are a couple." Hollance turned down the music. I nodded, "Yes of course. I have to get invitations. Paper ones, I don't want a bunch of random people showing up. Invite only." I said. "Good. I promise I'll try to show up. My mom understands." He said. "Well I also want to know she's okay. Stop here!" I exclaimed, he slammed on his breaks. On our right was Lackman's Tables and Chairs. Hollance pulled around the corner into the parking lot and turned off the tuck.  I climbed out eagerly and closed his door. Hollance walked around his truck and grabbed my waist, he kissed me. I leaned in for a few seconds, then pulled away. "I can't kiss too long, I have a lot of stuff to do." I let him go and continued walking. He followed behind me.  I have been to Lackman's Tables and Chairs, so many times. My mother loved buying new furniture, almost every year. Lackman's was her favorite, it had the nicest stuff. Hollance breathed out as he looked around.  "We are getting collapsible, right? You won't want to keep going to your house and back." Hollance said. I nodded, distracted with a stunning hang up mirror. I walked past it sorrowfully, and headed to the counter. Lackman was standing there on the phone. He smiled at me and hung up.  "Look who it is! Millicent Coral!" He came and hugged me. I gasped for air when he set me down. "Thank you, but your strength will break my fragile bones. I need collapsible tables and benches. Let's do… twenty of each." Hollance scoffed. "Are you being serious? How many tables do you need?" He was shocked.  "Hollance, this is a sweet sixteen, I need a lot." I nodded to Lackman who walked away. Hollance walked away, I followed him. "Hollance, why are you mad?" I grabbed his hand. "Look I don't have time to be wasting gas! I can't go back and forth, I don't have any money right now." He pulled away.  "Look I'll pay, even for lunch. I want to help you." My voice was soft, kind. "I don't want help from my girlfriend! It's embarrassing enough that I have to work at the mini golf course. That's barely paying any bills. I can't use my electricity." He shook his head.  "You have everything Millicent. You don’t have to worry!" He shouted. "So it's embarrassing that your girlfriend wants to help you!" I was staring at him. "Yeah, because I look like a charity case." He snapped. "I'm done! I love you Hollance, and you obviously don't feel that way. Don't even show up to my party." I was crying now. I walked away and stood outside.  I crossed my arms and wiped away my stupid tears. Hollance threw the doors open, they slammed shut and he climbed into his truck. The horn went off a few times. He started it up and drove off pretty fast. I sniffled and Lackman came jogging over.  "Oh no, Milli it'll be okay." He tried to hug me and I shrugged him off. "Now I have to call someone to pick up my shit." I mumbled. "I'll take it to your house, leave it in your backyard." Lackman rubbed my back. "Thank you. I'll call Evanessa, have her help I guess." I pulled out my phone.  I dialed her number and waited. "Hey what's up?" I thought about what to say. "Yeah Hollance had to leave rather suddenly. Something about his mom, I need you to help me." I waited. "s**t really? Oh my god, I'm on my way, where are you?" She asked. "Lackman's." I answered. "Okay see ya later." She hung up. I put my phone away and sat on the sidewalk. I sat on a stool in Cakes, Cupcakes, and Food Amaze waiting to try a few cake flavors. My heart hurt, I really messed up and Hollance wouldn't answer my calls. Evanessa was eating a cupcake happily, she didn't know yet. I would of course have to tell her, and seconds later the whole world would know.  She pulled her stool over. "So what do you think happened with Hollance?" I looked at her. "I don't know." I gave a little shrug. "It really sucks, at least he'll have your party to cheer him up." She nudged me. "What do you mean?" I asked.  "He was totally looking forward to it. He really likes you." She smiled. "I broke up with him. He said I thought him like a charity case. That's why he left, I love him, and he doesn't even care." She gasped. "Why didn't you tell me!" She exclaimed.  "Because I don't want it to be true." I said. "You can fix this. Go to his house, spend the night, it'll fix everything." She said. "No! I will not do that! If he cares at all, he'll apologize." I stood up as the baker came out. "Just do that one! Make it like this." I put a drawing down and walked out.  "No need to be hostile. I was just suggesting. Now the boutique?" Evanessa asked and came over. I crossed my arms. "Just hurry up." I got in her green punch bug and strapped in. I was getting mad at everything, nothing was going how I wanted today. I was supposed to be doing this with my mother, she always made these trips good.  I closed my eyes and put my elbow on the window. I closed my eyes and waited to be at the boutique. I could just imagine my dress in my head, walking outside and everyone smiling. Hollance waiting for me at the dance floor.  I frowned and clenched my teeth. Evanessa stopped her car and I got out. I ran into Mr. Airest. He grabbed my hand, dipping me down like in a dance, and pulling me back up. "Hi." I said, my breath was shaky. "Hi, we run into each other a lot, huh?" He asked and let me go. "It seems so. Maybe it's fate, we're supposed to be friends. I have to go inside, I have a dress to try on." I smiled. Evanessa pulled me inside and I waved at Airest again. He watched me for a little bit until the door closed. "He's cute." I rolled my eyes at Evanessa's comment.  "He's twenty or so my father mentioned once." I said and she let me go. "Oh right and that's a problem why, older guys are cute." She said. The seamstress came out and smiled. "Hi, I have a design. I just need to be measured." I said, she nodded.  "When will this need to be ready?" The woman asked. "In a week." I answered and stood on the platform. I stared at myself in the mirrors. I handed her the drawing of my dress and another sheet of all the things I wanted it to look like, it was very detailed. "That is a lot of work." I smiled at the woman. "I know, but please. It's my sweet sixteen. I want it to be special." She smiled and put her head down.  "I will do my best." My phone started ringing. I eagerly took it out hoping it was Hollance. It was my mother. "Hi mom." I said. "You sound disappointed." She chuckled. "No! I'm just having a bad day. I wish you were helping." I sighed. "I know baby girl. Your father and I are at home, we can't…" Something crashed over the phone.  "Mom!" I screamed. "Daniel no!" My mother screamed. "Stop it! Don't kill him!" She screamed. "Diana!" My father yelled. There were gunshots, a lot of them. I dropped my phone. My heart stopped and Evanessa shook me.  "Millicent what's wrong?" Evanessa screamed. I took off running out. I started up her car and drove. I had learned from Hollance, one thing he said I needed. To know to drive at least at thirteen, in case of emergencies and no one could help. I was stomping on the gas.  I was at least at sixty, I moved in and out of traffic. My hands were sweaty and my throat was dry, I couldn't stop hyperventilating. After racing through traffic, I got to my house. Actually a police line, people were all over. My house was on fire. Firefighters were busy trying to put it out, Hollance was at the line.  "Mom!" I ran to the tape and ducked under. I tried running to the house, I was held as I screamed. My house was gone, my parents, everything I loved. "Daddy!" I cried. The police officer lowered me to the ground and held me. I screamed as if I was in physical pain. My life was gone. ⏳ Flynn ran towards the post office. Using the back entrance of the building, he went in. No one else was here, not this late. Flynn needed to get to the Zetronics headquarters, to stop what they were planning.  He pulled out a silenced pistol, he had hidden weapons all over the office. He put the bag on his right shoulder, while placing c4 on the main pillar of the building. Flynn had lined that pillar with so much c4 it would bring the building down.  Flynn walked out the back of the building. He snuck around the alley towards the stores across. Everything was closed, he would have no problem getting away. He looked at the detonator in hand, ready to press the button when he was safe.  Flynn ducked behind a van, in case the windows broke. He took a deep breath and pressed the button. He covered his head as glass was sent everywhere. Alarms from all over were going off and people were screaming.  Flynn stood up, he looked around the van. The entire building was on fire. The middle had caved in, and the buildings surrounding it were on fire too. Black smoke was steadily filling the sky and police sirens were going off in the distance. Flynn spiked the detonator on the road. He wasn't ready to be caught for this. He saw a parking lot not too far away. He ran across the street as a few cars drove past. He looked at all the cars in the area.  He spotted one of his favorites, a good one too. A black Chevrolet Corvette 1960, he smiled. He looked around again, this time for anyone who was in the lot. He quickly jogged over to it. He swallowed and broke the glass with his elbow.   It wasn't cold this time of year, he could deal with a broken window. He quickly got in, no alarm was triggered. He spent a few minutes fixing his seat. Flynn tossed his bag into the passenger seat, closed his door, and smiled. He busied himself for a few minutes trying to hotwire the car, when it finally started up, he cleared away the glass, and strapped in. He put it in gear and drove. Getting away with what he had just done, he just needed to finish it.
