Chapter Two - Talking With Cops

3324 Words
I sat in the chair, staring at my feet. It was three hours after I raced home. The police had killed the fire, but everything was gone. All evidence of my parent's killer, gone. I was taken to the police station to be questioned about what happened. I had no idea.  "Miss Gronze." The chief was friends with my father, who had been since they were kids. He was as devastated as I was. "I don't want to. I-I can…" I shook my head and cried into my hands. "Millicent." He said again. I screamed and people looked over. "Someone killed my parents! Who did it!" I asked.  "We don't know. We are looking into it. Do you know anyone who would want to hurt you?" He sat next to me. "No!" I hugged myself. "How did it explode?" I asked. "We believe gunpowder. It would have to have been taken into your house." I shook my head. "My parents don't believe in weapons, they destroy families." My mind was spinning. "I know this Millicent. Is there anyone who went to your house today?" I shook my head. "We ate and we all left." I said. "Okay, what happened over the phone. We had Evanessa tell us. You were screaming over the phone at your mom." I looked at him.  "I wasn't mad. I heard it, she was yelling at someone. I heard the gunshots. I took Evaness's car." I had tears streaming down my cheeks. "Okay, thank you. Is there anyone who can ta…" "Millicent!" Hollance ran over. I jumped up and hugged him. He squeezed me tightly and I cried.  "I saw you try running into the house. Then get taken away… Millicent I'm so sorry." Hollance held my head against him. "Hollance, do you know anything that might?" Chief William asked. "I don't know what happened. After I left Lackman's, I was driving around for a while. Cooling off when I went down to Millicent's road. The house just… exploded." He said.  "I wasn't close enough to see anything." He added. Chief William rubbed my back. "Hollance I want you to take Millicent to your house or Evanessa's. I don't want her alone for a while, she needs to rest and eat." Hollance nodded and grabbed my hand.  "No! I want to help!" I shouted. "Millicent you can't help anymore, I will keep you updated." Chief Williams said. Hollance pulled me out, I was crying again. "Hollance their dead." I stumbled down steps, Hollance caught me. "Stop Millicent. I know, you don't have to keep saying it." He said. I shook my head.  "I want them back, Hollance! My mom was supposed to help me decorate! My dad was gonna dance with me!" I was hyperventilating. "Millicent stop! Breathe." Hollance said. He pulled me the rest of the way down the stairs, he pulled me outside. I gasped for air and fell to my knees. "I don't want to go!" I screamed.  Hollance got on his knees, people walked past looking at us. "Come here." Hollance hugged me. I sobbed on his shirt, my life was falling apart. Worst of all, we were still broken up. "What's gonna happen to me?" I asked and held his shirt.  "A lot I guess. They will probably bring in family, you'll have to choose where to go." Hollance kissed my head. "I have no family here! I'll have to leave! I don't want to leave you." I shook my head. He grabbed my head and stared at me. "You'll be okay Millicent, I promise." I sniffled.  "I don't want to be okay, I want my parents back! I wanna have my sweet sixteen!" I pushed him away and stood up. I pushed my hair back, the ponytail had fallen out. "Millicent having your party is a bad idea. You need to make plans to bury your parents, have a ceremony." Hollance argued. "Shut up! We aren't even a couple anymore. Don't tell me what's good for me! I'm having my sweet sixteen!" I yelled. Hollance stared at me. "No. You need help. You need to sleep, you're in shock." He stood up. "Well so are you." I snapped.  "Come to my house, eat something, rest." He grabbed my hand. "No Hollance!" I shoved him away. He stumbled back and hit the sidewalk. "Leave me alone." I took off running away from him. I pushed past people, tears were racing down to my jaw.  My heart was in a million little pieces. I was yanked backwards. A truck came flying past a red light. It would have killed me. Someone was gripping my arm, I swallowed. Mr. Airest walked around in front of me, I stared at him.  "I… you just…" I had no words. He looked worried, like Hollance did, and I hugged him. "What the hell, why are you running into traffic." He asked. "My house… it's gone. Bl-blown to pieces. My par-parents are d-dead." I cried. He pried me off of him, I stared at him. "Everything is gone." I looked at my shoes.  "I'm sorry but I can't stay here. Where's Hollance." He asked. "I don't know. I'm scared. I… wh-what's going to happen to m-me?" I asked. He forced a smile and pulled away. "Mr. Airest you're my only friend, Hollance doesn't even love me. I need help." I reached for his hand. "Find a different family, I can't help you." He said. He ripped his hand away and walked across the street, I stood there crying. "Milli!" Hollance turned me around and hugged me. "Thank god you're okay." He held my head to his chest. "I'm so scared Hollance." He picked me up and carried me to his car.  He put me in and stared at me. "Listen to me, you're going to be fine. We'll get through this together. I was a fool to say what I did, I love you Millicent, more than anything. Let me help you." He had his hand on my knee. I nodded. "Take me to your house. I wanna go to bed." I cried. He kissed my hand and closed the door. He walked around the car and got in. He started the truck up and started driving. I seatbelted in, staring out the window, I fell asleep.  I woke up laying on a bed. I was curled up with a soft blanket. My head was sunk into a cloud-like pillow. I was warm, I took a whiff of Hollance's room. He loved sports, but his room smelled like spiced vanilla rum. A candle you could get from so many stores. I blinked. Hollance had his arms wrapped around me.  He was asleep and so warm. I slowly sat up, his nose twitching as my red hair grazed his face. I had stayed here so many times before. I knew how to sneak away, he let me go and I got off the bed. "Stay asleep, Hollance." I whispered and kissed him softly. I snuck out of his room and closed the door.  I walked downstairs, his mother was in her wheelchair knitting. "Hi Mrs. Spencer." I said. "Oh dear. Come give me a hug. I heard about your parents, my condolences." She put her arms out. I ran over and hugged her. "I don't know what happened." I said.  "You can stay as long as you want." I hugged her and smiled. "I'm starving." I said. "I have twinkies and frozen burritos." I giggled. "I'll take two burritos and a twinkie." She nodded, wheeling her way into the kitchen. "I hope you and Hollance are okay." I sighed. "I got so upset for nothing, he's had a lot on his plate." I sat down.  "The moment he hurt me, I threw him out. I hurt a lot and he still helped me. I love you know, I really do." I said and smiled. Someone knocked on the door, I stared at it. "Hollance, it's Evanessa. I want to make sure Milli is okay. I'm really worried!" I got up from my seat.  I ran over and opened the door, Evanessa gasped. "Oh Milli!" She hugged me. I took a deep breath and smiled, wrapping my arms around her. "I'm so glad you're okay, I was worried." I pulled away. "I've had the crappiest day or yesterday." I wasn't crying now. "I know, it sucks. You still have your diary. Are we still having your party?" She asked.  I shrugged, "I don't know. Hollance thinks it's a bad idea, I should be planning for the funeral." I said and walked with her to the table. "Yeah, I guess  we could have a couple people over. You can still make a wish." Evanessa said. "Yeah, I guess so. It's days away, I don't even want to think about it." I mumbled.  Evanessa rubbed my arm and hugged me again. Mrs. Spencer gave me my food, I stared at it. "You know… I'm not really hungry. You can have it." I gave it to Evanessa and walked to the stairs. I walked upstairs and went to the bathroom. I sniffled and stared at myself.  My hair was knotted, an ugly mess. Most of my makeup was gone or smeared. Hollance opened the door and walked in. "I look terrible. I feel terrible. I can't eat, I don't want to think about it, I just want to curl in a corner." I said. He nodded and wrapped his arms around me, laying his head on my shoulder.  "You'll be okay. I'll do anything for you, except let you hurt yourself. You need to eat, take a shower, change your clothes. We'll have your party, if you want to. I'll have Chief Williams plan the funeral." He whispered. I smiled and closed my eyes. "Thank you, I don't want to be alone. Will you stay?" I asked.  "Always." He kissed my ear. I turned and kissed him, wrapping my arms around him. He picked me up and set me on the counter. I took off my own shirt and stared at him. "Just for a little while." I said and kissed him again.  That was a lie, we didn't stop for hours. I laid on Hollance's bed breathing hard. He smiled and kissed my shoulder. "That… I won't sure won't forget that." He mumbled. I nodded and sat up. "What was different yesterday? Who wanted my parents dead? How did gunpowder…" I stopped myself. Hollance sat up.  "What?" He asked. "Mr. Airest." I muttered. "He dropped off a package at my house. It was for my parents. He smelled like smoke and he needed to leave. Hollance, Mr. Airest did this!" I shouted. I got off Hollance's bed and pulled on my clothes. "You don't know that for sure, it could have been anyone. He's the mailman." Hollance argued.  "We ran into each on the sidewalk. He smelled like smoke, he had to leave rather suddenly. I bet, no one else got mail. Hollance trust me. We have to talk to Chief William's." I said. He climbed off his bed and pulled on his clothes. I tied up my hair and grabbed the bag Evanessa had dropped off.  Hollance and I ran out of the house. He drove as fast as he could to the police station, my heart was racing. I jumped out when we stopped. I ran inside, the place was busy. "What are you doing here?" Chief Williams yelled. I ran over to him, "I know who killed my parents." I said. He grabbed my arm and dragged me into his office.  I sat down, he stared at me. "How do you know?" He asked. "It makes sense. Mr. Airest, the mailman. He dropped off a package for my parents. It didn't occur to me then. When I was leaving earlier I ran into him. He smelled like smoke, he was worried, but not for me. Being caught, I bet no one else got mail." I explained.  "Do a search, please." I begged. He sighed and opened up his computer. "First and last name?" He asked. "Flynn Airest." I said and moved to the edge of my seat. He looked closely at his screen, then turned it for me. Only two Flynn Airests came up.  An eighty-two year old man, recently deceased and newborn. "No, that can't be right. He's been delivering packages for weeks now." I argued. He turned the screen back around. "No one in the city has that name, only these two." I sighed. "Okay, then try the post office." I suggested. "It's gone." He said. "What?" I asked. "Blown to pieces. No one was injured lucky." He said. "How? This has to be him! You have to find him. I'll tell you what he looks like." I said. "Millicent go home!" Chief Williams yelled. I was taken back. "Fine." I said.  I pushed my chair back and stood up. "I miss them! That isn't a crime." I said. "Accusing people f murder is a crime. Go back to Hollance's house!" He said. I opened the door and slammed it closed. I walked back outside and got back in Hollance's car.  "What happened?" Hollance asked. "He yelled at me. Apparently I can't help. He doesn't believe me, but I'm going to prove it. I have to." I said. Hollance nodded and started up the car again. We drove to my destroyed house. I wanted to see it. He stopped the car.  I swallowed and opened the door. What was left of the house was black and burnt. The grass was brown and dead. The windows were all broken, some parts were still smoldering. I shook my head and ran inside, I looked around. I ran inside the rooms, everything was destroyed.  "I can't believe someone would do such a thing, it's terrible. Flynn must be mentally ill to have done this." I said and shook my head. Hollance ran over and grabbed my hand. "If he did this, you'll bring him to justice. He'll be sent to prison, I know it." I nodded and smiled. "We should head home, my mom will be having breakfast, then I have to pick up my brothers." I pulled him out.  "Okay, I'll keep you company." I said. "That would be nice. My siblings will ask questions like crazy." He said. "Yeah. All my family will be showing up in hordes. How am I going to put on a brave face for them?" I asked and stopped by the car. "I'll hold your hand, like when you had a tooth come out. I'm here, all the time." He said. I kissed him again. "I love you Hollance. My parents may be dead, but at least I still have you to hold onto. I don't know what I would do without you." I said and hugged him. "Me neither, I love you too." He whispered.  ⏳ Flynn stood behind a wall watching semi trucks park in the drop center of the Zetronics warehouse. The company destroyed everything he loved. They tested their bombs close to his small town out in the country.  He wasn't there when their bombs failed and destroyed about a hundred miles in each direction, but his house was wiped out. His parents and siblings. Their skin had peeled from their bones, they died slowly. He pushed away the memories as he watched four men get out of the two trucks.  Flynn quietly set his bag down and pulled out his silenced pistol. "Look guys, the Gronze being killed doesn't change anything. We'll still get paid." Worker one argued, walking to the back of the truck. "Paid by who?" Worker two asked and unlocked the truck.  "The Gronze you dumbass. The company still owes us for this drop." They opened the back and climbed inside. Most of them were smoking, there were six now. Two coming out of the warehouse. "Don't drop these, they might break." They began handing them out. "Or explode." Worker three joked.  "We are carrying fragile cargo. No joking!" Captain Ortega walked over. He has worked for the company seven years now. He called himself Captain Ortega because when he was out on the field using these weapons he had a rank. He tested unstable bombs, didn't regret anything.   Flynn's blood boiled, his fist held still, ready to pull the trigger. Ortega ripped the box from worker three. He tore it open, pulling out a bomb and a pistol.  "The Gronze are dead. The daughter can't take over, she doesn't know what the business is. I will be taking over, my name plastered on every building. These guns will sell for millions." Ortega laughed. Flynn took a deep breath. Aiming for Ortega's head, he watched the others closely.  Flynn pulled the trigger, Ortega hit the floor, the other pulled out their guns, but it was too late. Each of Their bodies fell to the ground, lifeless. One thing Flynn never did, was fail. He refused to allow the company to get away with what they had done.  Flynn ran over to the bodies, he glanced inside the truck. Wooden boxes filled the truck, others were electronics. He opened one of the wooden crates. He pulled out the rifle. It would do what he needed. He screwed the suppressor on, hopped out of the truck, and ran into the building. He had his duffle bag filled with c4, placing it on pillars and doors. Flynn saw a worker, she was alone and drinking coffee, he didn't think twice. Flynn shot her in the back of the head, he walked over. Flynn ripped the key card from her shirt, then placed a few more bombs. There were only a few other workers here this late. Flynn killed them. He went into one of the main offices. Grabbing all of the paper on the desk, he tossed it into a trashcan. Flynn took out his lighter and tossed it inside the trash can. He watched as the paper lit, then ran out.  He laid his g*n and bombs down, turning on all of the c4, then taking the detonator. Flynn ran out the back, towards the semi trucks again. Still no one was around to see. Flynn grabbed Ortega's body and dragged him into an alley. He was a whole building away, good enough to get exploded.  Flynn peeked around the corner and pressed the button. The whole building erupted, he ducked aside and smiled. Smoke filled the sky, he watched it, and begged to be forgiven. These people deserved what they were getting.  Flynn heard more explosions, he cleaned the pistol, and put it in Ortega's hand. He changed the car twice now, he would have to change again. Flynn yanked the door open and stared at the burning building. He slammed his door and started up the car. He pulled the car out of the driveway, on his way to Lackman's. Lackman's wasn't far, it took about ten minutes. Flynn pulled his car into the parking lot, turned it off, and grabbed another bag of c4. Flynn planned to ruin Millicent's life, he blamed all of his pain on her.  The store was closed, and locked up, he busted a window open and climbed inside. Flynn unlocked the back door as an easy escape. He set the bombs in the middle of the store. Like always, he turned on the c4, took out the detonator, and left.  He ran towards his car ducked behind it. He hit the button, another huge explosion. Alarms and people screaming. He quickly got in his car, started it up and drove away. He wasn't shaking like others might have been. He didn't care how many people he killed, he wanted the Gronze to pay for the death of his family. He was going to kill Millicent Gronze next.
