On the last heartbeat, I timed my breathing and steadied my aim just above Eric’s head. Just 4 pounds of pressure on my trigger sent the bullet into my intended target, which just so happened to be a brick. Eric didn’t even flinch, he was watching for my location. I knew he couldn’t see me, though it seemed like our eyes had met for a fraction of a second before I got to part two of my plan.
With my adrenaline pumping, I whipped behind me, not giving Steven a chance to react to what just happened, and took the kunai out of its sheath hidden in my sleeve. I flung it and hit my mark just between his eyes. He didn’t even realize what happened before he hit the ground. I am very good at this job now on to part three…. Escape.
Only once in my life have I ever thought about leaving the institute and it was because of my parents’ death four and half years ago. I never thought I would leave it because of a bad op and a guy. What is wrong with me letting a guy influence my decisions like this? Something felt right about this though.
I got stuck in my head again while I ran to the east to where the cliff lowered enough, I could get down to where Eric and Sarah are. I heard the minions of the institute start tracking me through the coms. I had to ditch the chip in my leg if I had any chance of escaping. I can’t do that now though; I will just have to keep running for now and take it out when I get further ahead. A quarter of a mile left to get to the lowest part of the cliff, there is movement up ahead.
“Wolfsong, Wolfsong. I am okay, everything will be okay. Let’s go.” Sarah whispered, yelling at me. She turned around and started running with me toward my mark.
“Where is Eric?” I asked Sarah.
“He was hit by your bullet. We need to run.” Her plan failed. I never missed a mark and my mark was that brick. I knew Eric was okay. I tripped Sarah and knocked her out. I wouldn’t normally let minions off easily for lying to me, but I had a soft spot for Sarah.
I finally reached my destination and jumped off the edge. I had to roll on my landing but otherwise, I was fine. I ran toward the last place I saw Eric praying to the Goddess he would still be in the vicinity. I felt a tug in my gut and followed it north when I should be heading west.
“Oh, please let this be the right way. I may not know where I am going, but I feel led this way. Please don’t let me get caught.” I sent my prayer up and kept running.
