Chapter Two

The Devil in the Driver's Seat Ava’s fingers knotted into the wet silk of her dress. The SUV glided through the streets, its engine a low, predatory hum beneath the rhythm of the storm. No one in the cabin spoke. The only sound was the rhythmic thrum of rain against the reinforced glass. The driver’s eyes caught hers in the rear view mirror. They were unblinking, grey, and utterly devoid of warmth. He watched her like a man inspecting a damaged item he had just acquired. "You have not answered my question." The calm in his voice was more jarring than a shout. Ava swallowed, the taste of bile still sharp in her throat. "What question?" One dark eyebrow arched. "Who are you running from?" Ava stared at the back of his head. Every survival instinct she possessed screamed at her to remain silent. She did not know if this man was a savior or merely a different kind of executioner. When she remained mute, he gave a slow, singular nod. "Very well." He turned his focus back to the road, his hands steady on the leather steering wheel. The silence that followed was suffocating. She glanced through the rear window. The three black vehicles remained in a tight, protective formation, cutting through the traffic with a deliberate, aggressive precision. She studied the man in the mirror again. His suit was tailored to within an inch of perfection. His watch was a subtle, expensive glint of silver in the dim light. He radiated a cold, heavy authority that settled into the marrow of her bones. Ava cleared her throat, the sound small in the cavernous interior. "You still have not told me who you are." A faint, mirthless smile touched his lips. "Have I not?" "No." "Interesting." He did not elaborate. Before she could push, the man in the passenger seat turned. He was broad shouldered with a face that seemed carved from granite, a jagged scar tracing a path down his cheek. He extended a tablet toward the driver. The driver glanced at the screen. His jaw tightened, a subtle shift in the muscles of his face that signaled a change in mood. "What happened?" the driver asked. "The hotel security footage is already circulating." Ava felt the floor drop away. Her escape, her frantic flight from the suite, was already being broadcast. The driver scrolled through the feed. When he looked up, the amusement had vanished from his eyes. In its place was a sharp, calculating focus. "Ava Hart." The way he said her name made it sound like a verdict. "Daughter of the late Richard Hart." Ava felt the breath hitch in her chest. "How do you know that?" "I have resources." It was not an answer, but it was an admission of reach. He turned the car onto a quieter, tree lined road, the city lights fading behind them. "You were supposed to marry Ethan Blackwood today." The name hit her like a physical blow. She looked away, staring into the dark blur of the trees, but she could feel his eyes on her. "You discovered something," he stated. It was not a question. "You learned something that made you bolt." Ava pressed her lips together. He tapped his fingers on the wheel, a slow, rhythmic sound. "Money?" Nothing. "Infidelity?" Nothing. "Blackmail?" Ava’s posture stiffened. The man smiled, and the sight was more dangerous than a scowl. "There it is." "Stop analyzing me," she snapped. He chuckled, a low, vibration that filled the car. "That is difficult. You are sitting in my vehicle, wearing a ruined wedding dress, looking like you have just witnessed a grave being dug." Ava opened her mouth to argue, but the words died. He was not wrong. "Did he hurt you?" The temperature in the car seemed to drop. "Ethan Blackwood. Did he put his hands on you?" Ava stared at his reflection. The question felt raw, stripped of social pretense. "No," she whispered. "He did not hurt me." Not physically. He nodded once, filing the information away. The SUV pulled through a set of massive iron gates that groaned open to reveal an estate sprawling into the distance. Security guards, silhouettes against the rain, watched them pass. "Where are we going?" "Home," he said. "My home." "Pull over," Ava demanded, her voice regaining some of its edge. He did not even glance at her. "No." "I do not know you." "That is true." "Then let me out." "No." The refusal was flat. Final. Ava felt a flare of white hot anger overcome her fear. "You cannot just kidnap people." The scarred man in the front seat laughed, a harsh, barking sound. The driver just sighed. "Ava," he said, and the way he spoke her name silenced her. "You entered my vehicle voluntarily. You were desperate." The truth of it was a bitter pill. She looked out the window as the mansion came into view. It was a monolith of stone and glass, glowing with a cold, artificial light. Security personnel moved with a military efficiency, their hands hovering near their holsters. The SUV stopped under a covered portico. The driver climbed out, and a moment later, her door was pulled open. He extended a hand, his expression unreadable. Ava looked at the reach of his fingers, then at the fortress surrounding her. She reached out, her skin brushing his. His grip was solid, an anchor in the storm she had created. As he led her toward the heavy mahogany doors, staff appeared from the shadows. They did not just greet him; they bowed, their heads dropped low, their eyes averted in a display of total, fearful submission. Ava felt the weight of the house press down on her. The driver stopped, letting the heavy silence build until it was almost deafening. "My name is Matteo De Luca." The world seemed to tilt. The name hit the air like a gunshot. Everyone in the city heard that name in whispers, in the dark, in the fearful tales of power and blood. He was the man who owned the shadows she had spent her life trying to avoid. Matteo watched the color drain from her face, his gaze as steady as a predator that had already won the hunt. "Welcome to my home, Ava." As the massive doors groaned shut behind them, the sound echoing like a tomb, Ava realized the truth. She had not escaped a trap. She had simply changed owners.
