Q: How do you go about creating an imaginary world?
Q:CHERRYH: I work a great deal from my archeological background, and I have probably in my mind about ten or twenty cultures from the origins of their civilization to their decline. By the substitutions of compatible cultural items from one culture to another, and a little bit of just grabbing the entire box and shaking and seeing what pieces come together, I can construct a plausible social system. I also, of course pulling a smattering of knowledge of astronomy and other items to help with the biology—I had a prolonged contact with human genetics via my roommate and had a little bit of scientific background. So, I’ve had sort of a Renaissance education in both the humanities and the sciences, and this has helped a bit.
