Chapter Fifty: Dei

. . . . . . (early October) "You warned me your entire pack was an oddity, and I was still surprised when the cub tracked me." I laughed as soon as I was human and had the basketball shorts on. The man who'd come out as the cub left was clearly Aiden's Beta, and his feline acquaintance. He paused briefly as he stepped into my aura and took a deep breath before approaching, but he hadn't seemed bothered since. "I can't smell you; how did he find you?" He held out his hand. "Bryce." I took his hand and smiled. "Dei. He used his hearing." Bryce looked perturbed and Aiden blinked at me. "But you guys don't make any noise. And nothing makes noise around you." I nodded. "Hence my surprise. He tracked me with one of his eyes closed, I assume the branded eye is blind?" They both nodded. "He said he followed the general LACK of sound until he was standing under the tree that I was in." Aiden looked as impressed as I had been. "Gyam might have better ears than me, damn." Bryce nodded at Aiden. "I thought that was possible, I haven't tested him since we found him. There was traffic noise, but he could follow me by sound, even with the softest noise I could make." Aiden's eyes clouded briefly. "Sinah wants to meet you." I sniffed curiously and shook my head. "Your mate is pregnant; I would suggest she wait." I chuckled at their looks. "My mother would be furious, and that's a lecture I'll gladly skip. The Puma lives outside the village, so none of the kinfolk have to live under our aura. The long-term effects of involuntarily imposed fear on others, let alone a fetus, is something we have never been willing to explore." Aiden nodded and his eyes clouded again. I looked at Bryce. "I assume you received contact from my tribe?" "Yes, Lilian called them back earlier to thank them, we plan to move tomorrow." "Why do you smell like a female?" "My Jaguar is female, I'm gay." He laughed and I nodded. "The hotel is right in the middle of downtown, but my kin own and run it. They will recognize you as shifters and I've asked them to identify themselves with my scent markers for your convenience. They are willing to help in any way." Aiden smiled. "Thank you, Dei." I shook my head. "Not at all, the tribe has asked very specifically." Aiden blinked at me, and I grinned. "They like the idea of having kind wolves guarding the kin on the reservation while I'm off on my cross-country errands." He chuckled. "Shouldn't be a problem, with the rate I'm gaining members, sending a few warriors over if you need to leave will be fairly easy." He stretched and looked towards the packhouse. "What was the final count that passed Lilian's interview?" I lifted my eyebrow at him, and Bryce chuckled. "Lilian has that effect on people. Wait until you meet her, it'll be the weirdest week of your life." He and Aiden laughed. "Twenty-two wolves in this group, the wolves from White Moon and River Talon arrived this morning. I believe that will bring our total to about forty." "You interview your pack members?" Aiden shook his head. "My Delta is human and insisted on the interview process." "That actually sounds quite efficient, since you are a new pack." I smiled at them, and Aiden grinned. "That was pretty much her entire argument, and she hasn't been wrong yet. Would you like accommodation for the night?" I shook my head and lifted my hands. "No, thank you, I prefer camping, for everyone's comfort. I would like to stay in the area and observe this pack, out of reach of course." He nodded and his eyes clouded as he likely informed this pack's leaders. "I have to go add my new pack members and get everyone packed for tomorrow. I'll have everyone ready at ten-thirty." "I will meet you here." Aiden waved and jogged towards the packhouse. Bryce did the same and I shifted and climbed a tree on the edge of the courtyard. I found a vantage point looking down on the courtyard and settled myself amongst the branches, ready to spend my afternoon watching the dogs run about. . . . . . .
