Chapter 2: The Alpha Who Wouldn’t Leave

Elara didn’t remember agreeing to follow him. One moment she was standing in the snow, laughing weakly at the absurdity of a stranger claiming she was his mate, and the next she was sitting in the passenger seat of a black luxury SUV, the heater blasting warmth into her frozen bones. This had to be shock. That was the only explanation. “You don’t have to take me anywhere,” she said, gripping her coat tighter around herself. “I can call a cab.” Kael’s jaw tightened as he drove, hands steady on the wheel. “You are not going anywhere alone tonight.” “That’s not your decision.” His golden eyes flicked to her for half a second. “It is.” She scoffed. “You can’t just—what did you even call yourself? An Alpha?” “Yes.” “That’s not a job title.” “It is where I come from.” She turned toward the window, watching snow blur into streaks of white. Her heart still hadn’t slowed. Every instinct screamed that she should be terrified—but beneath the fear was something else. A strange pull. A warmth that settled deep in her chest whenever Kael was close. It made no sense. “Where are we going?” she asked. “Somewhere safe.” “And after that?” Kael hesitated. Just for a breath. “After that, we talk.” Chapter 3: The World Behind the Veil The house wasn’t a house. It was an estate—hidden deep in a forest just outside the city, surrounded by towering pines heavy with snow. Warm golden light spilled from the windows, and the moment Elara stepped inside, heat wrapped around her like an embrace. People froze when they saw her. Men and women—beautiful in a wild, untamed way—stared openly. Then one by one, they bowed their heads. “Elara,” Kael said quietly, leaning close, “stay near me.” Her pulse spiked. “Why are they looking at me like that?” “Because they can feel you.” She laughed nervously. “Feel what?” Kael didn’t answer. A woman with silver hair approached, her eyes sharp and knowing. “So this is her.” Elara bristled. “I’m standing right here.” The woman smiled faintly. “Good. Strong voice. You’ll need it.” Kael placed a hand at the small of Elara’s back—possessive, grounding. Electricity shot through her at the contact. “This is Mara,” he said. “My beta.” “Your… second-in-command?” Elara guessed. Mara’s brow lifted. “She’s human.” “For now,” Kael replied. Elara pulled away. “Excuse me?” Kael turned fully toward her. “You need to know the truth.” Her stomach dropped. “Werewolves are real,” he said calmly. “So are mates. And you—Elara James—are bound to me by fate.” She stared at him, waiting for the punchline. None came. Chapter 4: The Mate Bond Awakens Elara didn’t sleep. She lay awake in a massive guest room, staring at the ceiling as warmth pulsed through her veins in waves. Every time she closed her eyes, she felt him—Kael’s presence like a steady flame just beyond a door. This was insane. And yet… Her skin tingled. Her heart thudded faster when she thought of his voice. His eyes. The way he had knelt in the snow like it was sacred ground. A soft knock came at the door. She sat up instantly. “Yes?” Kael stepped inside, filling the room with his presence. He looked… restrained. Controlled. Like a predator holding itself back. “You’re not sleeping,” he said. “No kidding.” He hesitated. “The bond has begun.” She swallowed. “The what?” “You feel it,” he said quietly. “The pull. The warmth. The connection.” She hated that he was right. “What happens if I don’t want this?” she asked. Kael met her gaze. “Then I will wait.” Her breath caught. “You’d really do that?” “For as long as it takes,” he said. “But fate will not let you go easily.” Chapter 5: Claimed in the Alpha’s Arms The attack came before dawn. Alarms blared through the estate. Shouts echoed in the halls. Kael was at Elara’s door in seconds, eyes blazing gold. “Stay behind me,” he ordered. Fear wrapped around her—but so did something else. Power stirred deep within her chest, hot and bright. When the enemy broke through the gates, Elara felt it. A surge of light exploded from her, knocking attackers back into the snow. Silence followed. Kael turned to her slowly, awe written across his face. “You’re not cursed,” he said reverently. “You’re awakened.” Her knees buckled—and he caught her, arms wrapping around her like she belonged there. “This is only the beginning,” he whispered. And Elara knew, with terrifying certainty, that her human life was already slipping away.
