Chapter 1 - A Distant Memory

363 Words
The last moment I remember was at the cemetery, standing in front of the tombstones of my family. I was now all alone; nobody else was there for me. I wept in anguish, hatred, and sadness and then wallowed with regret. We were a simple, ordinary family living an ordinary life. But our lives took a 360-degree turn the moment I found that lottery ticket. It seemed like the heavens agreed to torment me for my sins. The rain poured so hard that it was difficult to see. My body was already weak from weeks of punishing myself and my chest often ached more often than before. Every minute became harder to breathe. I wanted to join them—my family—wherever they are right now. I don't want to be alone. I felt sleepy all of a sudden. My trembling knees gave way and I collapsed to the ground. The lower half of my body turned numb. I couldn't move a single muscle; it was as if my body was paralyzed. Hmm, maybe I could just sleep all of this misery away. Maybe everything will go back to normal. I wished everything did. Seeing my family again, all healthy and happy, would be a very satisfying moment for me. But I guess it was already too late. I was too blinded by greed and selfishness. My body felt weaker and my breaths were faster and more labored. Maybe I could rest my eyes for a bit. Yeah, I think I should do that. I closed my eyes in the heavy rain. The coolness and harshness of the raindrops brought solace to my body. As my consciousness slowly drifted away, I heard someone yell from a distance. The voice got louder as I gradually dozed off to sleep. Please let me have my rest. But he was yelling next to my ear. What was he saying? I'm not sure. I just wanted to sleep. He yelled again. His voice was soothing, but I couldn't recognize his face. He seemed to be saying something, and he repeated the same words all over again. What did he say? “Don't die on me!”
