Aurora could almost hear the gasp from Rowan and he stared in shock. His eyes were wide as he stared at her.
Aurora gave a small smile and turned away. She could feel his eyes on her back as she walked. She walked slowly and gracefully toward Felix who stood with some pack members and visitors.
“Felix.” she said calmly when she reached him.
Felix smiled widened with his eyes wrinkling with joy.
“Aurora! You look amazing.” He put an arm around her shoulders and pulled her close. “Everyone, this is my lovely sister, Aurora.”
People greeted her warmly. Men and women turned to look at her with interest. They said nice things about how beautiful and confident she looked.
“It's nice to finally meet you, Lady Aurora.” one visiting Alpha said. His voice was deep and strong. “We’ve heard a lot about how you've contributed to the Crestwood Pack.”
Aurora gave a kind smile.
“Nice to meet you too, Alpha.” She looked around at the faces noticing who seemed powerful or important.
But then she felt something wasn’t right. It was like something bad was happening nearby. While the Alpha kept talking Aurora looked to the side and saw something strange.
Maddy stood with her back to the crowd. She was talking to a young servant in a mean voice.
The servant stood still and was looking pale and scared. Even though there was noise in the room Aurora could hear that Maddy’s words were cruel. Aurora’s smile faded.
“Excuse me.” she said, cutting off the Alpha kindly. “I need to take care of something. Please continue speaking with Felix.”
She walked away smoothly and confidently towards Maddy and the servant.
“Is there a problem here?” Aurora asked in a calm but strong voice.
Maddy spun around with an angry face.
“What does it matter to you—” She stopped in shocked when she saw Aurora. Her anger turned to surprise. She took a step back covering her mouth.
“You?” Maddy whispered.
Aurora raised her eyebrow and looked at her.
“Yes, me. Now, what’s going on?”
The servant quickly spoke up seeing a chance to be saved.
“Luna Maddy is angry, My lady because I spilled a little wine on her table.” He pointed to a small stain. “It was an accident, My lady. I apologized right away.”
Aurora looked back at Maddy.
“A little wine? Really, Maddy? Is this worth yelling about in front of everyone?”
Maddy didn’t speak. Her eyes moved from Aurora to the servant.
“You can go.” Aurora said kindly to the servant. “Please go do your work.”
The servant bowed with thanks and left quickly disappearing into the crowd.
Aurora faced Maddy again with cold eyes.
“Now, Luna Maddy, let’s talk about how you acted.” Her voice got lower and more serious. “I won’t let you treat our people like they are nothing. Do you understand?”
Maddy finally spoke with her voice shaking with anger and fear.
“Who do you think you are? I’m the Luna of the Redwood Pack! I should be respected!”
Aurora stepped closer with her eyes narrowing.
“Respect is earned, Luna Maddy. It’s not something you can just ask for. And so far, you haven’t earned much. Let me be clear if you keep using such ugly words, if you keep being cruel to people, I promise you’ll be thrown out of here. And it won’t be quiet or kind.”
Maddy’s face turned red.
“You wouldn’t dare!” she hissed.
“Oh, I would dare.” Aurora said softly but with power. “Don’t think my kindness is weakness. I’m in charge here, and I will make sure everything goes well. That means I’ll deal with troublemakers like you.”
Maddy clenched her fists.
“Just because you somehow got into this party wearing borrowed or probably stolen clothes doesn’t mean you’re important! You’re nothing but a—”
“Careful, Maddy.” Aurora said in a cold voice. “You’re walking on thin ice.” She stared at Maddy while giving her one last chance to stop. But Maddy only got angrier.
“I’ll have you kicked out with no time at all!” Maddy hissed venomously. She turned to a nearby servant. “Where is Alpha Felix’s sister? The host of this event?”
The servant looked at Maddy then at Aurora then back again. He looked confused.
“Luna Maddy, you’re… you’re speaking to her right now.” The servant announced.
Maddy’s mouth fell open. She stared at Aurora. Her face lost all its color. Her hand shook and she gasped. This was the Alpha’s sister? The one everyone talked about? The fighter? She hadn’t expected this...
Aurora’s eyes turned cold as she picked up the wine glass Maddy had been holding. She swirled the red wine and stared at Maddy the whole time.
“You don’t understand your place here, Luna.” Aurora said mockingly. “Maybe you need a little lesson.”
Before Maddy could move Aurora poured the wine on Maddy’s head. The red wine ran down Maddy’s face and soaked into her dress staining it badly.
Maddy screamed and tried to wipe her face, calling attention of the visitors Immediately.
“How dare you!” she shouted. “How dare you do this to me?”
Aurora threw the empty glass aside. It hit the floor and broke loudly. She beckoned at the two guards near the door.
“Guards! Take this woman out. She is not welcome anymore.”
The guards who had been watching the scene walked toward Maddy Immediately.
“What? No! You can’t!” Maddy shouted with panic setting in. “I’m the Luna of the Redwood Pack! You can’t throw me out like trash!” She fought against the guards. “Let me go! Don’t you know who I am?”
The guards didn’t respond. They held her tighter and kept moving.
“I’m Luna Maddy!” she screamed. “You can’t treat me like this! This is a disgrace! It’s war!”
As they dragged her to the exit,
Maddy saw Rowan standing at the side of the room. His face registered nothing but surprise.
“Rowan!” she screamed in desperation. “Rowan, help me! They’re kicking me out!”
Rowan took a step forward, opened his mouth then stopped. The guards kept moving. Maddy’s voice got quieter as she was pulled away.
Aurora watched with cold calm. She had made her point. No one no matter how important could come to her brother’s pack and be cruel to her people.
As Maddy was dragged to the door she cried one last time.
“Rowan, please! Don’t let them do this! I’m your Luna! You must help me!”
Rowan didn’t say anything. He looked only at Aurora and as their eyes met Aurora saw something in his eyes—maybe regret? Maybe longing? She didn’t know. But whatever it was it wasn’t enough for him to stop what was happening.
The guards gave one last push and took Maddy out. The double doors closed loudly behind her cutting off her cries…
