Chapter 5

Ella now sat in silence, her thoughts a chaotic swirl of hope, fear, and uncertainty. The money was a critical lifeline, but the terms of the deal scared her. She knew she had little choice but to proceed, but the thought of what was to come left her feeling uneasy. Ella glanced around her room, her gaze falling on a family photo on her desk. Her mother's smiling face seemed to offer a silent plea for her to do whatever it took to help her Her phone buzzed again, jolting her from her thoughts. It was a message from her father, a simple update on her mother's condition. The text was brief but filled with the kind of urgency that left no room for delay. She opened her laptop and began searching for Damien Alexander Sinclair. “Let’s see what kind of man you really are,” she muttered, scrolling through the articles. She already knew he was the president of Sinclair Enterprises, but she wanted more insight into his personality. “He was so intimidating the day we spoke. Why did he have to be so infuriating?” The search results revealed that Damien had no social media presence, but he was described as a ruthless billionaire and a confirmed bachelor. “No special someone, huh? Not surprising. Would anyone want to be with someone like him?” She read about his parents' separation when he was nineteen and how he took over the family business. “The articles say he’s a history-maker, but they also have their share of scandal.” She sighed, staring at the screen. “I’m about to marry him as contractual wife. How am I supposed to handle his ruthlessness? The thought that he could do anything to me because he paid for me is overwhelming. And the fact that I’m a virgin… why am I even thinking about his attractiveness?” She shook her head. “I hate that I’m having these thoughts. I need to focus on what’s practical, not what’s irresistible.” She continued her search, typing in “Damien Alexander Sinclair images” As she clicked through the results, she found herself faced with articles and photos that weren’t just business-related. One headline caught her eye: "The Unseen Side of Damien Sinclair: Rare Photos and More." She hesitated but clicked through. To her surprise, the article included several high-resolution images of Damien, some of which featured him shirtless, showing off a chiseled physique that seemed to defy age. “Oh, great,” she muttered, her eyes widening. “Is this really necessary?” she laughed. She scrolled through more images, her gaze lingering despite herself. “He’s too handsome,” she admitted, a mix of frustration and fascination in her voice. “Why does he have to look like he belongs on the cover of a magazine?” Each one seemed to showcase a different facet of his allure—one had him in a tailored suit that accentuated his muscular frame, while another showed him lounging by a pool, his abs glistening in the sun. “Seriously, this is ridiculous,” she said to herself, feeling a flush of embarrassment. “I need to remember why I’m doing this. It’s a contract, not a romance. But how can someone be so effortlessly attractive and ruthless at the same time? I’m not even supposed to care about how he looks. I need to stay focused on the bigger picture.” She closed the laptop with a decisive click, trying to shake off the images that lingered in her mind. “Okay, that’s enough. Time to remind myself why this is just business.” The next morning, Ella went to the meeting place sent to her by Adrian. The meeting was set for a coffee shop located in a chic part of the city, a venue that seemed to cater to the high-end clientele that Damien Sinclair and Adrian Marquez were accustomed to. Ella arrived early, her nerves frayed as she waited for Adrian to arrive. When Adrian finally walked in, he was impeccably dressed in a sharp suit that spoke of his professional demeanor. He greeted Ella with a warm, reassuring smile, and they exchanged pleasantries before settling into a quiet corner of the café. Adrian wasted no time in getting to the heart of the matter. "Ella, thank you for coming. I understand that this is a difficult decision for you, and I appreciate your willingness to discuss the offer further." Ella nodded, her fingers fidgeting with the edges of her notebook. "I appreciate the increased offer, but I need to understand everything clearly before making a decision." "Of course," Adrian said. "The contract we're proposing is for six months. During this period, you would be expected to fulfill the role of Damien Sinclair's wife. This includes residing in his penthouse and maintaining the appearance of a married couple in public. The financial compensation is significant, and it's intended to address your immediate needs." Ella listened intently, her mind racing as she absorbed the details.. She thought about her mother's surgery and the relief that the money could bring. Yet, the thought of living a lie and the implications of the role still troubled her deeply."Can you explain more about the role?" Ella asked. "What exactly will be expected of me?" Adrian took a sip of his coffee before responding. "The role will require you to attend social functions, events, and public appearances alongside Damien. You'll be expected to maintain a certain level of decorum and contribute to the appearance of a stable and respectable relationship. It's a role that requires commitment and discretion." Ella's mind reeled at the thought of the public appearances and the constant scrutiny that would come with the role. It was a far cry from her current life and the simplicity she had grown accustomed to."I understand," she said slowly. "But what if I decide to back out? Are there any penalties or consequences?" "The contract will have clauses regarding termination and consequences," Adrian explained. "It's important to understand that breaking the contract would have legal and financial implications. We want to ensure that both parties are fully committed to the arrangement." Adrian provided Ella with a copy of the contract for her review. "Take your time to read through it," he said. "If you have any questions or need further clarification, don't hesitate to reach out." Ella took the contract but struggled to focus on the words; her mind was clouded with anxiety and anticipation. "Please provide your bank account details," Adrian instructed. Without hesitation, Ella relayed the information. Within minutes, her phone buzzed with a notification. She looked at the screen and saw a transfer of five hundred thousand dollars—her heart raced at the sight. "That's not the payment for the deal," Adrian's voice came through calmly. "That amount is for your personal use. Consider it an advance for shopping and any immediate needs. The actual payment will be processed once everything is finalized." Ella's heart pounded even faster. "I-I... what shall I do?" Adrian's tone was reassuring. "We'll handle the rest of the details soon."
