21 Oliver ‘Stop!’ said Oliver. ‘Stop right now!’ Kip slammed on the brakes. Oliver clambered out of the car. ‘Close the f*****g door! The light!’ said Kip, fumbling for the button to turn off the car’s interior lights. ‘Oh my God,’ said Oliver. Lying in the street, half a block away, was a body. ‘That’s a person,’ he said. ‘Get back in the car,’ said Kip. ‘You’re going to f**k everything up.’ The body rolled over. Then, from somewhere on the street, a woman screamed. Oliver immediately ducked back into the car. Without looking back, Kip made a quick left and accelerated through the neighborhood. Houses and trees flashed by, mailboxes and lampposts were there and then they weren’t. Time pulled apart, everything felt far away. A cold shock had taken over. Oliver left himself
