Derek shook with the force of the lone wolf's jaws and he began to make a gargling sound. I watched on, head spinning as I tried to make sense of what was going on. Blood ran onto the grass as Derek stopped moving and I could no longer hear the sound of his beating heart.
The wolf released it's grip and looked up at me. I moved into a defence stance and braced myself. Now, head on, I could see that the wolf had unusual eyes. It wasn't until the sun shone directly into them that I realised that it had one brown eye and one blue. I took in it's scent and could tell that it was a male wolf which would explain why it was so big. The wolf moved slowly toward me with it's head down. Every fibre in my body was telling me to turn and run but my feet felt as though they had grown roots and it was impossible for me to move. I slowly opened my palms showing the wolf that I had nothing in them. The wolf took another slow step towards me, his head still down as if he was bowing to me.
The amber under tone of his scent filled my nose and seemed to calm me down. I had to find out why the wolf had attacked it's own kind to save me, a fox.
"I won't hurt you, I just wanted to say thank you for saving me from the other wolves," I said softly, trying my best not to spook him. Many foxes are in full control of their fox forms but I had no idea if this was the same for wolves.
The wolf took another slow step towards me and gently nudged my hand with it's warm, moist nose.
"I am Willow," I said as I began to gently stroke the top of his head. His eyes closed momentarily and I could feel him shaking slightly beneath my hand. "I have no idea if you are liking this or not but please don't bite me."
The wolf seemed to give a wolf chuckle and he began nudging my leg forcing me to move backwards towards the bushes. I complied and walked backwards. The lone wolf then ran back towards Derek and grabbed onto his shirt, pulling him towards the bush that I was standing in. He dragged his body over the church garden wall and seemed to disappear out of my sight. I stood there for another 5 minutes, staring at the spot that I last saw him. My brain was wheeling from the incidents that had just unfolded.
Just then, my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was Nathanael who was shouting down the phone before I even got a chance to say hello.
"Willow, where are you? We picked up the wolves scent but found yours mixed in with theirs. The trail split and we have lost it and we have lost yours too."
I hesitated, not sure what to say. The lone wolf had saved me so if I mentioned anything to my Skulk they would use me as bate to capture him.
"I am fine," I lied, "I ran into some wolves on the High Road. They split up and chased me but I lost them." I began sprinting towards the High Road trying to get as far away from the church as possible in case they picked up the scent of Derek's blood or the lone wolf.
Nathanael let out a loud sigh, "Where are you, I will meet you there."
I quickly jogged to a side road and noted the name of the road. "I am on Buryside Close."
I could hear his muffled voice speaking to someone who was with him and then I could hear the rev of his engine through the phone, "give me 2 minutes," he said as he hung up.
A few minutes later I could hear the screech of his tyres as he quickly spun his car into the road. He stopped the car in front of me and jumped out hugging me. "f**k Willow, I was so worried about you," he said grabbing me in a bear hug. He buried his nose in my hair sniffing me. "I can smell wolves all other you, did they touch you," he moved back so that he could look me over, a red tint growing in his eyes.
"I am fine, like I said, I lost them," I said trying to hide the shakiness in my voice.
He pulled me in again and then held my hand to lead me into the passanger side of his car.
I huffed as he gently guided me into the seat, "I am able to get into a car unaided you know. Seriously, I am beginning to take great offense at the fact that you think I can't take care of myself. I am not a damsel in distress in need of a knight in shining armour to rescue me. I can look after myself. I don't need saving from you or anybody." Just as I said that, the lone wolves eyes popped into my mind and my heart began to feel like it was fluttering like a butterfly.
I was sure that Nathanael could hear the irregular beat of my heart because he ducked his head down and gave me a kiss on my cheek. He then shut my door and jogged over to the drivers side.
As he turned on the ignition, he squeezed my knee. "I am sorry. I know that you can take care of yourself but the thought of someone hurting you...I just can't even think about it," he said with a mix of anger and worry.
I nodded while turning on his radio, I needed something to distract me and stop Nathanael from asking too many questions.
