Soul Mates

I closed my eyes and let out a sigh as the crisp night air breeze caressed my neck. I have always been an outdoors person and hated being cooped up indoors. Being high up off the ground also made me feel more ease, which my other Skulk members felt was weird. Actually, they found a lot of the things I did weird which hasn't helped me to fit in. I have felt the odd one out since I was brought to Valentine's Mansion and no matter how hard I tried, I could never seem to conform to the norm. Some may say that this is an appealing trait that I have.... Who am I kidding? Everyone hates it.  I crouched down lower on the roof top, moving closer to the edge when a breeze came in from the east, bringing with it a scent that was becoming all too familiar. There was a wolf nearby. One that I had not come across before. I contemplated following the scent to the wolf but did not want to deal with the fall out from Maxim and Nathanael's disapproving glare; mixed with sympathy. My phone buzzed in my jeans pocket and I knew, before I even looked at it, that it was Maxim summoning us back to the mansion. I turned on my heels and ran across the roof tops, easily jumping from one building to the next. Spotting the road ahead, I jumped down onto the street and carried on running. As soon as I got to the country road, I began running at full speed, not worrying about anyone seeing me. The burn in my thighs began to ease away as my muscles started to expand and contract at super speed, allowing me to move even faster. I could feel the vibration of the bass of a car radio beneath my feet. It was travelling at a fast speed and it was heading my way. I slowed down to a speed that would be more appropriate for a human woman so that my speed wouldn't alarm the driver. The car zoomed past me but then slowed to a crawling speed just a few meters ahead of me. The lights were bright, making it difficult for me to see any detail of the car but then a familiar scent engulfed my senses and seemed to cause another hairline crack in my heart.   I carried on running past the car pretending not notice that it was him but he called out to me: beckoning me back to the driver side window, "want a ride pretty little thing?"  I rolled my eyes trying not to show any emotion and began jogging down the lane. The car engine started again and he drove past me stopping a couple of meters a head of me. "Come on Willow, get in. Max is waiting for us and the last thing that you want to do is make him wait for you."  I stopped again and glared into his green eyes. He had a way of melting away my anger. I stepped forward before I realised that someone was sitting in the passenger side. I ducked my head lower to get a look and the waft of cheap perfume made the inside of my nostrils burn. Peering in, I saw a petite, blonde woman with obvious fake eyelashes and a bright red lipstick, which she applied over her lip line to make her lips appear fuller. Why does he keep going for these 'Barbies?' I mean, this is false advertising at it's best. Once she takes of the mask of make up, fake eyelashes and whatever else she has added to 'enhance' her look, she is going to look like a completely different person. My distaste must have been apparent on my face because the Barbie began to uncomfortably move around in her seat while Nathanael threw his head back in a fit of laughter.  I gestured toward the car saying, "are you going to let me in or would you prefer I ride in the boot?" Nathanael's eyes seemed to sparkle. He turned to his friend and whispered, "I usually make her ride in the boot while tying her hands and feet together but since you are here, I think I might let her sit in the back." He giggled while she gasped and he opened the car door getting out to allow me to climb over his seat to get in the back. As I did, Nathanael's friend waved at me, trying to introduce herself. I grunted at her as I clumsily fell into the back seat.  As he started driving again, he looked at me through the rear-view mirror and said, "I'm just dropping Stacey off at home. It is on our way so it won't be long." Stacey reached her arm over Nathanael, trying to hold onto his hand that was on the clutch. I involuntarily made a clicking noise at the back of my throat and Nathanael smiled at me through the mirror while Stacey looked back at me with a weak smile. I looked around the interior of the car as memories of mine and Nathanael's romps in the back seat flooded my memory. We would always escape the mansion together, telling everyone that we were going hunting when instead, we would find a quiet place to park, put the seats back and spend hours making love. Some nights, we would just lay in the car holding each other, discussing our future. I would lay on him while he would stroke my hair and I would twirl my fingers in his golden chest hair and trace the line of hair down from his chest to his belly button. Despite being incredibly tall and muscular, he was always so gentle with me and treated me as though I was porcelain doll. Even as teenagers, he would go out of his way to make me feel happy and protect me from the endless gossip about my origin. Everyone always teased that we were soul mates who travelled through different lives being destined to find each other. Well, I guess that this life had a different plan for us.  A single tear escaped my eye breaking me from my revere and I immediately looked up at the mirror hopping that Nathanael hadn't realised. He did. I quickly wiped my cheek, getting my phone out of my pocket, trying to distract myself. The car stopped in front of some terraced houses and both Stacey and Nathanael climbed out of the car almost in unison. He walked over to her, guiding her to a house while she held onto his arm. She stepped onto her tiptoes, trying to kiss him but he swiftly turned his face to the side making her plant a kiss on his cheek. Her face blushed a deep pink colour and he shrugged his shoulders while looking at me. Stacey then smiled at me waving and turned to walk to the front door of the house. I tried to busy myself with my phone again as Nathanael walked over to the car.  "Come and sit at the front," he said while patting the passanger seat.  "I'm fine where I am thanks. Plus, I would rather not have your Barb...play thing's scent all over me." I tried to keep my voice nonchalant but a little bit of emotion escaped it's way through.  Nathanael winced. "Well, I have to keep myself occupied some way since you don't want me," he said before focusing his attention on the road. It was now my turn to wince while images of him being intimate with Stacey popped into my mind. I had no right making him feel bad about being with someone else. After all, I was the one who ended our relationship after he proposed to me.
