Five Years Old

Mama, why do I have to go to go to school? I asked while sitting on the floor playing with my favorite doll. I heard her respond in thought, how do I begin?... she slowly said, come here, my love. I crawled on her lap and I instinctively rested my head on her chest.   She began, I need to tell you something very important, something you must not ever forget, ok?   Ok, I sighed... All were-wolves have an aura, or presence. Normally, From the time of birth, a mother were-wolf can sense the aura of their child’s wolf. Even though were-wolves don’t shift into their wolf form until their 16th birthday, their presence can be felt. Now, being able to sense the aura of other wolves helps to keep the pack safe and also lets them know if intruders are coming near.  Around the age of 14, the wolf’s aura can almost always be sensed by other pack members. Sometimes it can be felt earlier if the wolf is extra strong. Sometimes though, no one can feel the aura. This is usually because in any pack of were-wolves, there is a chance that a member will be born without a wolf. These folks are weak, and require pack protection; the other wolves don’t like weakness.   Why are you telling me this story, mama? I asked and looked into her eyes, which were staring at me calmly. You need to know that I can not feel your aura, she said slowly .  What?? My blue eyes got as big as saucers as I began to pout. Does that mean I don’t have a wolf??? No, she sighed. Although it is very rare, some wolves can hide their aura from everyone. These wolves are very rare, and very powerful. She was staring at me again.  When you go to school and are around other pack members, they may treat you differently because they can’t feel your wolf. Do not get angry with them. You must be kind and you can never, ever tell them what I have told you.   But how do you know I have a powerful wolf then? Why can’t I tell them?  I used my most powerful whine but it didn't seem to have any effect on my mother.  A mother always knows, she said, finally breaking her stare and resting her head on mine. Just as wolves despise weakness, they have a great fear of power. It is just too dangerous to tell them. Promise me, you will not talk to the pack about this.   Ok, mama, I promise.
