Chapter 8

Chapter Eight Logan’s POV Anne squeezes my hands as we reach my study, her flawless face smiling up at me in utter adoration as I push the door open. I step aside to let her step through, running through my head for a plan before walking in after her. She plops on the black couch in the room and crosses her legs, her eyes eager, waiting for the plans I promised. But how on earth do I tell her that it was a spur-of-the-moment thing, that not less than ten hours ago, I stopped thinking about the wedding altogether? “Where is Jake?” she asks suddenly, looking around. “He is supposed to be here already, isn’t he? What kind of a Beta doesn’t show up when his Alpha calls?” It is not exactly a novel knowledge that Anne grew up privileged, but that doesn’t excuse the way she acts. She walks around with an air of authority and pride that she tends to tuck underneath when I am around just to get in my good books. But I see through her easily like I do with any member of my own pack. It is a skill I acquired over the years, a skill my father ensured I had before his untimely death. He always said that I need to be a great judge of character, and what better way to get around to that than being able to tell what people might do from a glance away? “Don’t talk about my Beta like that, Anne,” I instruct, not pushing too much since it is the first time I will make a verbal correction. She purses her lips and rolls her eyes. “But he is supposed to be here already. We are going to talk about our wedding, and it is obvious he doesn’t think it is important enough for him to be here on time. How then will he treat me when I become his Luna? Will I call for meetings and get disregarded too?” “Let me worry about my Beta,” I mutter, already starting to lose it. “He is none of your business.” I flex my Alpha dominance over her, and she nods in response, not wanting to push it. Although I cannot call our marriage over because of Trina, I can do that easily on the grounds that she does not respect her Alpha. No Alpha would get married to a woman who doesn’t acknowledge his dominance and even her powerful family knows that. “Sorry,” she mutters. Just then, Jake strolls in looking really planned for a meeting. I mind-linked him on our way to the study and he got there as fast as he could. I know that because I sent him into the woods, along with the warriors to try to pick up the scent of whoever was after my mate. “Did you find anything?” I ask through the mind link as he nods in acknowledgement to Anne, walking further into the room. “No,” he responds through the same medium. “The only smell we picked up was hers, mixed with the light scent of humans. I doubt a human attacked her as she would be too powerful for them. But that was all we found. We were going to extend our search before you called me over, but I have told the warriors to get on with it.” “I need to ensure that whoever did that to her gets caught so she can live without the fear of getting attacked. I can’t send her back there knowing fully well that she could get hurt.” “So, you’re planning on letting her go?” Jake asks at once, not missing that part of my statement. His tone is laced with surprise and rightfully so because Jake is one person that knows how hard I have been searching for my mate. Finding her right now, and having to give her up has to be one of the hardest things to do – borderline impossible. But I have to do it if I don’t want to get the pack into loggerheads with Anne’s family. “I’m not planning anything for now,” I respond, walking around the desk. Jake takes one of the seats on the other side and waits for Anne to join us at the table. But she simply scoots to the edge of the couch and frames her face with her palms, watching us both. Of course. Anne never does any of the hard work. “I need us to postpone the date of the wedding,” I say casually, grabbing a pen to keep my hands busy. Not surprisingly, Anne shoots out of her seat, her eyes suddenly laser-focused. “Why are we moving it? I don’t understand.” “There are just a lot of things I have to do for the pack right now. I can’t afford to get distracted by the wedding, and at the same time, if I’m going to have a wedding, I want to be a hundred percent involved in every of the preparation. But I can’t do it when my attention is divided.” Anne shook her head. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” she scoffs. “Postpone the wedding? Like I’ll let you do that.” “You heard the pack’s borders were breached today,” I push, urging her to see reason while trying to cover up the truth. “That could mean an attack any day from now and I need to be certain of our security before bringing you to live as the Luna of the Black Stone Pack. I don’t want you to have to go through the stress of planning a battle with me.” “Who says I have an issue with that?” “We are not postponing the wedding, Logan. I can’t. I already told all my friends and…” “Anne, be reasonable for once,” I mutter, rolling my eyes. “I need to be done with this investigation before any ceremony can occur.” “When are we going to have it then, because it seems we don’t have a concrete plan yet?’ “You are right. But two months is a lot of time. Something could change before then.” “Something like what?” “You don’t have to worry your pretty head about that. I will send words to your parents today.”
