Chapter 3

985 Words
Logan's POV "What do you think happened to her?" Jake asks as he stares at my pale-looking mate lying on the bed and breathing evenly. Thank the Moon Goddess for that. "Someone hurt her," I grit out through clenched teeth with my hands balling into fists. The gash on her head has been sewn shut and is already healing but knowing that someone has dared to place their dirty paws on my mate makes my vision blurry with unrestrained rage. I want blood. When I finally snap out of my little anger moment, I find Jake looking over at me with a weird look on his face. "What's is it?" I snap. He has been casting those weird looks my way ever since I carried my mate in my hands and brought her into the pack house. He recoils but still doesn't get rid of that f*****g look on his face. "It's just...you've been acting differently ever since this rogue came through the pack borders." Rogue? My fangs slide out from my lips as I let out a deadly growl. My mate isn't a rogue. He flinches and then points accusingly at me. "This is exactly what I'm talking about." I close my eyes and let out a deep sigh. There's no point denying it. Besides, he's the person I trust most. "She's my mate," I confess. That sentence has the same effect as an atomic bomb being designated. For a long moment, there's a heavy silence so loud that I actually worry for a second if Jake is even breathing. That silence gets broken as Jake takes in a choppy breath. "f**k!" He exclaims and I glare at him before moving my gaze back to my bed to find my mate still blissfully knocked out. "Keep your voice down," I whisper yell. His yelling might not have woken up my mate, but we're in a pack house filled with sense-heightened werewolves, and all it takes is one whiff of this before the rumours will start. I can't have that. I need to come up with a strategy first before letting the pack in on this. Jake turns to face me and grips my shoulders. "What about Anna?" He questions with comically wide eyes and I might have found them funny if I wasn't already swimming in a turmoil of conflicting emotions. "You're supposed to get married to her a few months from now. What on earth are you going to do?" Jake's fingers slide through his black mass of hair as he pulls on the end strands. Seeing my best friend, who was usually the level-headed person between the both of us, reduced to this sad mess doesn't reassure me at all. "I'll figure something out," I grit out. Oh, if only it could be that easy. Anna is the daughter of an Alpha of one of the most prestigious packs. Just like me, she is without a mate and the two packs have decided to strengthen their pack by forming an alliance and merging. Everything has been set into place. The contracts have been signed, and a day has been picked for an arranged marriage. There's no going back. At least, not with some dire and deadly repercussions. "f**k. f**k. f**k," he chants. "This is bad. This is really very bad." "Get yourself under control," I order. This man standing in front of me is meant to be my second in command. He's meant to be fast on his feet and be able to lead this pack in any situation where I may not be present. I'm not exactly liking this preview I'm getting. He nods, lets go of my shoulders and takes in deep breaths. When he faces me again, his features are calm and an air of calmness is around him. "Are you going to go through with the wedding?" He asks softly. "I have no idea." I need to have all the facts straight before coming to a decision. That includes finding out who my mate is and finding out why someone is after her. He looks at me, loyalty shining beneath a hint of apprehension. "I'll be right behind you in whatever decision you come up with. You know that right?" "I know," I confirm, not a hint of doubt in my words. Jake would lay down his life for me without a second thought. The same goes for me. That's why we're leading this pack side by side. He smiles and looks back at the bed with a tilt of his head. "She looks like she's been on the run for a long time." He steps closer to her, observing the filth on her cheeks and hair. "Do you think she could be a rogue?" He asks softly, as though scared of what my reaction to that question will be. I shrug, not really knowing what to believe. It's not like that same question hasn't lunged its way into my head, but I've chosen to reside in a state of denial. Finding my mate a few months before my intended arranged marriage is bad. Finding a ROGUE mate a few months before that marriage can only be termed as disastrous. I'm choosing to believe that the Moon Goddess wouldn't be so cruel to me. I exhale harshly, compounding every emotion in me into that one exhale. "We'll get an answer to that question when she wakes up." Hopefully, she will be able to at least tell us who she is. I'm begging for that at the very least. Jake lets out a sigh that mimics my exhale. "I'll leave you two alone." He moves away from the bed and pauses at my side to give me a firm pat on the back. "Good luck," he murmurs. I grunt out a nonsensical answer. I have a feeling that I'm going to be needing all the luck I can get.
