Wendell didn't say another word. He bent down, lifted her into his arms, and turned to head straight for the exit. As he passed me, he glanced over his shoulder. His voice was tight with urgency and guilt. "Violet, head home by yourself first. I'm taking Yvette to get treated." I kept my face blank. "Go on ahead." He must have thought I was being too cold.
