Twenty-Four When Heron didn’t come back after an hour, Grace went looking for him. She wandered the halls and checked the library. It was empty. Even Nora was gone. Perhaps she’d also been invited to this family chat. When she found that the back patio as well the dining room were also empty, Grace resolved to return to their rooms and wait it out. Then voices caught her ear. She followed the sound, discovering a hallway she hadn’t yet explored. She crept down it slowly, trying to keep her footsteps light. The voices were coming from behind a closed door at the hallway’s end. I shouldn’t listen, she thought. It was possible they could lower the wall’s transparency the way Grace had often done at home. Even knowing this, she couldn’t bring herself to turn away. “He should be here,”
