“Give up, Robin!” Lucien’s voice boomed through the forest, Robin shook her head, Lucien has pinned her to the ground. “Never,” Robin spoke with so much determination, that Lucien’s eyes widened. She wasn’t like other kids who gave up even before the fight started. No, she was still fighting though if Lucien pushed her to the ground any harder her ribs would break. She was younger than them but had the spirit twice as strong as theirs.
“You are the oddest 8-year-old I have seen,” Lucien spoke and Robin scoffed. “You hang out with them older idiots who can’t even fight, don’t cry when you are given a fair fight.” With that she lifted her knee, kicking Lucien in the spot that no boy should ever be kicked.
Robin didn’t even know what was the point of the fight; they were walking playing with trees and when Robin said she was tired and wanted to go back, Luc got angry. She noticed that he got angry whenever something didn’t go his way as if his anger was supposed to make her less tired and more willing to play. Robin got up and dusted herself off, “Now, can we go home?”
Lucien growled, he was on the cusp of the shifting age, his growl still sounded childish. He got up and marched towards Robin who stood unflinching. He slapped her across the face. Robin gasped and held her face. “Don’t you dare to fight me ever again?” He held her face in his hand roughly. “Understood?” Robin looked at him with anger even wilder than his. “No, you… you idiot.” Lucien’s eyes flashed colors and Robin thought, maybe she shouldn’t have been that harsh with her reply. But he was annoying and rude and always wanted to fight her.
He growled once more and let go of her, making Robin stumble back and fall on her a*s. “Want to go back home?” Lucien asked, hovering over her. Robin nodded, she was getting tired of his game. “Apologize, say you are sorry for disrespecting me.” Robin looked at him with scrunched brows. “Stand on your knees and beg for my forgiveness, you have disrespected the future Alpha.” Robin didn’t move from her spot. She wasn’t sorry and she wasn’t about to apologize for a fair fight.
She got up and looked at Lucien, he was taller than her but she didn’t care. “I will find my own way home,” with that she marched away from him.
Robin woke up on her own, without any alarm or random noise that startled her. But her heart was still beating violently. Lucien and she seemed to have more bad memories connecting them rather than good. She wanted to write it off as childish fights as she remembered being on good terms with Lucien when she was 9, right before the war. But the intensity of 8-year-old Robin'ss anger still left her breathless and she wasn’t one to forgive easily.
Robin showered and laid on her bed, Today was her last day in River Banes, tomorrow she had to drive back to Oak Tails and stand by Lucien. Listen to his orders and try her best to not get taken advantage of. By now, Robin realized that most if not all that Lucien has told her were a lie. She had no idea how he got people to join the pack, she didn’t know how he even escaped the war. Robin’s father has made her go to a safe house along with other children, Lucien wasn’t there. But the safe house wasn’t very safe as it started collapsing on them as a bomb landed nearby. After the first blast, everyone was on their own.
Lucien spoke of pack members leading him away and helping him escape, but all the pack members were either fighting or if they were too young, hiding in the safe house. How did he get out and go unnoticed by the majority of soldiers in the field? What did he do? How he survived? Robin suspected that it had something to do with the way he used his Alpha Tone. All wolves of higher ranks could use their growl to assess their authority, a growl was supposed to make your opposition submit. But Robin has never seen it done with the actual words and orders. This wasn’t just submission, this was controlling, this was… scary.
Robin dug through the library, looking through titles and content pages of old books, hoping to find any mention of the growl or actual voice. She found a book titled. Our ancestors and what they taught us. She opened the content page and scanned through it. The book was divided into 2 sections, the old werewolves and everything about them and the modern wolf counterparts of them.
Robin’s eye got caught on one part in the old werewolves’ section. Their powers. She immediately tried to find that page, it sounded like the thing she needed to know. Fear breeds power. Robin opened it and tried to read quickly while still processing the words. It was mostly about the speed and healing abilities but on the next page, there was a mention of Alpha wolves and their powers.
In ancient times there only were Alpha wolves and those who submitted to them, Omegas. As societies formed and bloods mixed, other ranks such as Beta and Gamma were formed and Omegas have also gained power becoming the average pack members we know today. This division of power between the higher ranks and average wolves was debated; wolves are free spirits they hate being controlled or fought into submission.
To reach our current pack state and rules the Alpha wolves of old times used their powers to make the wolves submit and accept their current ranks. It was rumored that Moon Goddess granted them a special ability to form the societies we know today. They called it the Alpha Tone and it gave the Alpha’s to order and change the reality of those in lower ranks than them.
It is similar to the growl the higher ranks use today but it was more powerful and more effective. Resisting it was hard as it's impossible to determine when it is being used; Alpha’s could speak normally and still enforce their rule on the wolf and the wolf would be none the wiser. By the use of the Alpha Tone, Alpha wolves created the pack systems we know today.
Robin stared at the book and found herself chuckling. Moon Goddess, of course, would be the one to give the power of controlling wolves. Robin remembered the Goddess's words; Soon you will realize that you need me. Just how much of Lucien’s plan did the Goddess know? And how much of it will she let take hold before she gets involved? Even as Robin thought of it, she knew that the possibility of Goddess getting involved was slim, nearly none. She has created them, nurtured them, but she also forced them into a bond to make sure that there is always a new generation of wolves, she made some wolves stronger than others and granted them the ability to control the others. She wouldn’t bat an eye if one of the packs just started a war and conquered the whole of the Northern forests.
Robin flipped the pages to the part about current wolves and the way the old powers manifested in them. When she reached the part for the Alpha Tone she was surprised by her discovery.
Luckily for all common wolves, the gene that carried the Alpha Tone was lost around the first half of the Millenia. Experts pin the date as 1100-1200. As wolves were mated in a wide variety of patterns the genes of Superior Alpha Wolves, the carries of the Alpha Tone, got mixed and they gradually lost the power to enforce their wishes to other wolves.
If the gene was lost 500 years before the Oak Tails was formed with the intention of keeping the blood clean, how does Lucien have that power? As Robin thought it another voice rose in her. Why does Lucien have that power, and I don’t? Robin shook her head; her thoughts were becoming too confusing to handle.
Robin left the library with a new purpose, finally, there was something solid to work with, she was going to learn more about the Alpha Tone and find a way of stopping Lucien from using it on her. Then, she could easily have a conversation with him and speak all her distaste with his plan. Then, he would never be able to shut her up again. Then, she wouldn’t be controlled ever again.
